The Wellerman Recorder Tutorial + Variations! | Team Recorder
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 сер 2024
- Everyone has heard The Wellerman sea shanty recently, sung by Nathan Evans and immensely popular across Tiktok. Of course it was time for a recorder tutorial! And I might have gotten excited and written a set of recorder variations too...
SHEET MUSIC: In my video I mention that you can download the sheet music below. But I have even better news - my official edition of the Wellerman Variations will soon be published by Schott Music! Stay tuned for details of the launch.
The notes written out here:
C C CC Eb G G G G
Ab F FF Ab C G G
C CC C Eb G G G G
G F Eb D C
C' Ab Ab Bb G G G
Ab F FF Ab C' G G
C' Ab AbAb BbBb G G G
G F Eb D C
Here the C' means an octave higher. The rhythm changes slightly with every verse to fit the words - this is an approximation!

Third variation: hmmm, tricky...
Final variation: *snaps recorder in half, sits in the corner and cries at ability gulf*
Agreed
Bro this guy is telling the truth
I've just searched for "Wellerman Alto Recorder" to see if anyone had done it. Then I saw that Sarah done it and got happy
Thanks for giving the sheet music, it must have taken you a few hours to write!
I got carried away and couldn't stop! 😂
@@Team_Recorder Those are the best moments in life! :D And by hearing the result, it was very much worth it! Thanks a lot! :)
I love it! Thank you Sarah.
This is brilliant!
4:05 its hard to do it, she doing it very perfect performance.
Wow, this really is an amazing version of the shanty we have all been humming to ourselves again and again over the past few weeks!!! I love the way Van Eyck is "transported" to the 21st century.
The last variation is a real challenge though. Thanks for sharing your creative ideas and your sheet music to help us recorder fans expand our repertoire!
The variations are so cool!!! Thanks also for making and providing the scores! I love that you take such contemporary trends and transfer them onto 'our' instrument with all its idioscyncracies and amazing features. :)
Absolutely LOVE IT! You are brilliant, Sarah!
Love the variations! 😍 Great work!
Absolutely love all these variations.
Those variations were just amazing!
Wow what fun! C minor sounds gorgeous and sea shantyish too. Thank you so much for sharing those fabulous variations with us all, this is very generous!
Wow - that final variation! Fab 😍
Your variations are BEAUTIFUL
That is so great! I love your variations. Thanks for sharing the score.
I love you Sarah, i wish i can take a screenshot of how i was smiling all through. This is absolutely brilliant and an outstanding arrangement...... Reminding me of Paganini.
❤️❤️❤️
loved it. such fun and your virtuosity is amazing!
Sarah, this is an absolutely delightful tutorial. The variations are fun and I love the escalating level of difficulty.
It is generous of you to provide a download of your variations as well.. Looking forward to more of your episodes!
Loved the 2nd and 4th variations especially, then you just completely blew my mind.
I love Van Eyck variations, and I am so delighted to see you keeping that light alive, so to speak. Besides, like everyone else, I have quite fallen in love with the Wellerman sea shanty. And thank you so much for making your variations free and available to everyone; it is very kind of you to do so, and much appreciated!
Wonderful! Thanks for the score. I am going to have so much fun with these variations!
Those variations were stupendous!!!
This is so cool, seeing the Van Eyck approach being illustrated as we are watching! Thank you!!
Beautiful, great musician and teacher, love your channel. Keep on going!!!
Each variation is something like a trip on the ancient music! Wonderful!
At the end of the last variation I realized I had a big smile on my face. Beautiful and exciting playing!
Genius! Thank you. What I love is the integrity and respect you show to music, to yourself, to the recorders, and to others. The way you promoted Nathan Evans was nothing short of elegant. I watched how you responded to the TwoViolins, or whatever they are called. In this day and age, with all the mud slinging, you bring so much positive, AND, so much to building the recorder world. Thank you. Few songs I like getting "on my mind" but the Wellerman is not one of them. Now, to see if I can sing your variations when I drive!
Wow. I just love this Sarah. The runs are cool. Such fun variations. You are amazing. Thanks
Dear Sarah, thank you very much for your wonderful variations and your generousity to share them so easily! May they make you even more famous! Many greetings from Berlin - Leila
Those variations are brilliant! You are so talented.
Yes, brilliant variations! You made the melody come alive!
Wonderful, absolutely amazing!
I love your variations!
Your variations are wonderful ❤️
The variations are so fun! Also loving the style of the video thumbnails as of late!
Wow! I loved the variations! This video is a great lesson, not about learning a new piece, but in music making in general 🎶
Wow, that is so beautiful! Thank you!
This is great Sarah :) Love it! Something new to learn and play :)
Very inventive. Great work!
Thank you for the variations and the Kombination from lesson and note-sheats. Ist's a great motivation.
Wow!! Thank you very much for the variations. They are so much fun to play.
I LOVE the variations!
Well that killed a couple of hours of lockdown. Thank you.
A huge round of applause to those variations and their creator!!! 😁👏 Great work!! I can see your passion for the recorder and love and dedication for music!!! Keep it up Sarah! 🤗
And thank you so much for the tutorial!! 🙇♀️
Holy Mac you're good. You made something really wonderful from this simple tune. I love it.
Those variations are great!!
Will I be able to play like this some day? Never! What a queen you are on your recorder. Variation 6 leaves me speechless
Love love love this :)
Now I know how I’m going to spend my weekend! Thanks for giving us the sheet music 💜
You have brightened my musical journey on the recorder!
Love it to pieces! I can't choose my fave' between version 2 or 4, but both had this Marine missing the ocean. All versions were fantastic, thank you very much for this.
I enjoy your videos and always learn something new 😊 thank you!
The variations are amazing !!!
I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!! I'm playing along section by section to learn the whole compilation
I love the variations😍
Wow! That was AWESOME! 😀
This was really nice! 👀
You should do more of these, where you just make your own variations of familiar tunes. 👌
Yes, I should! Any requests? 😋
Yesterday, I play your Sea Shanty Variations and it's soooo great. :-)
It's my favourite piece for Recorder now...
:-D
I love the variations, thank you:)
Brava Sarah. That was brilliant.
👏 Great tune for ye "old salts!" But one need not be a raconteur of sea stories to enjoy a good sea shanty. 😊
You're continuing to bring out the versatility of the recorder with other genres of music. Touché! 👍 😁
I always make it a point to play sea shanties on the concertina. They never "sound dry" when played on the concertina. 😥
BTW: Sea shanties sound great on the tin whistle too. But you already knew that. 👌 😉 ♫
What!? Your variations are so beautiful. I'll try out this piece if I have the time.
Ha Ha. That last variation was just showing off!! :-) Great video as usual and very interesting to see how variations can be created. Thank you.
Fantastic
Lovely video Sara!!
AMAZING
You are amazing !
This is lovely and just the nudge I need to tackle my alto. Many thanks.
"I might have done a thing..." Best line ever!!!!!
Fun! I have had this melody on my brain for a few days now. Very catchy! Takk! Thank you! Dankje! Leuk, seg!
This is really good!
SARAH THIS IS PRODIGIOUS!!!!
It's beautiful! Thank you so much, and I hope that one day I'll learn to play half as fast as you!
I love your flut sound so much 💞💞💞💞
This is brilliant, I must have a go at this.
When Sarah started talking about Variations, my mind immediately went to van Eyck; than she precisely and explicitely cited his name!
To top all of that, her Variations are a perfect calque of van Eyck's style, add them to the "Fluytist Lust-Hof" and no one, except for those very familiar with the work and knowing it practically by photographic memory, Index included, will notice something have been added.
Aww thanks! Nice to meet another Van Eyck fan 😉 The last variation is a bit of a Vivaldi indulgence though!
@@Team_Recorder Yes, very violinistic.
@@Team_Recorder Specifically the Vivaldi Gloria? Or is that a motif he used often? (We sang the Gloria one Christmas and our conductor wrote a Deck the Halls with that motif. That's the only reason I recognize it.)
@@drekfletch It often uses them when developing some theme, expecially for solo violin parts.
I discovered your video in Instagram and I came here to watch it completely :)
This song has become a giant...so much that now all my husband does is listen to sea shanties (except that he was into it before it blew up on tiktok), so much so that he picked up a concertina and is currently learning it as we speak. I do not play recorder I actually play guitar and mandolin but I stumbled across this channel because I'm always looking for new interesting instruments and sounds also totally into old timey and renaissance music. I didn't know professional recorders were even a thing I thought children just got them when they turned 8, however you rock it. Although the latest thing Ive seen is called a venova, seems like a cross between a recorder and a sax...I would like to see your hand at the venova, available on amazon. lol
omg you read my mind sarah!! Wanted to be able to play this song sooo bad
I've loved this song for a while now and I wanted to play it on recorder then i seen this and I was so happy that i could now!
This was great. Thank you
Amazing and Brilliant!!!! 💕 😊🎶
Thank you so much, dear Sarah, I just restarted to play my very old soul supporters in C and F (Sopran and Alt-Blockflöte) last week after a very long, very, very long time, which are with me since 1973 I think...and the Wellerman is my favourite to play
Thank you so much! ~♥♥♥
from South Korea
Je maakt me weer enthousiast om na jaren weer eens mijn dream recorders (sopraan en alt) van zolder te halen!
doe maar!!
Oh great variations of the Wellerman song! Great the first one is easy! variation 3+... BYE
Wow Sarah , you blow my mind listening to play , really love it , your fantastic , love it your amazing. 👍
Brilliant
Amazing!!!
I think all variations would sound even more amazing if combined as one track. Stunning playing!💖💖💖💖
Like layered on too of one another? Ooh that would be cool!
@@Team_Recorder yes! The layers would sound amazing! Especially either the more baroque variations. I haven't played my treble/alto in a couple of years. I might just dig her out...💖💖💖
YES! First and/or second variation would be cool enough for my ukulele group. But I have to transpose it to C
Awesome!! 😁😁😁
Super !
I’m sure when Nathan sees this, he’ll be impressed
I enjoyed your variations...I suspect you enjoy classical music and the pirates of penzance. "could you do it one more time but very fast" ~pirate king.
I like this one you're playing
Not nerdy. Good! Thanks!✌️🌞😎🎻
It's so wonderful 😍😍🥰
OK. I wrote that last comment before I heard all the variations. Now I change my comment to: Oh. My. God. You are so freaking amazing!
You are so amazing to listen to that was really fun,
I love your videos, made me buy a recorder for the first time in 40 years.
Also, who are the insane 4 people downvoting this :-O the kind of people that wants 2020 back?!
