I used to use a garage that worked on original Cobras all the time. CSX2001 was there one day and of course, I was all over it taking pictures and looking it over. Dennis Caan owned the La Crescenta based Foothill Garage and was well known in the LA area for working on vintage Ford motors and Cobras, from the 289 cars up to the FE427 beast. I don’t remember all of the numbered 289 and 427 cars I saw, but it was always thrilling to see one in person.

Shelby didn't originally fit the engine, all the work was done by AC. He asked them if they could fit an American V8 in the Ace and they said yes, they knew they could because they'd already modified their production cars to accept a Chrysler V8. Shelby eventually told them that it was to be the new Ford 260, so that's what they fitted.

AC didn't put Chrysler V8's into their cars. That was Sunbeam. The Sunbeam Tiger started life with a 260 Ford V8 but later Chrysler bought Sunbeam then they put Chrysler V8's into them. AC shipped the car in this video to Shelby's shop in Venice Beach, California. They shipped it without a motor and transmission. Shelby's people put the Ford 260 V8 into it in their shop.

@@289cobra9 AC had modified the Ace to accept a Chrysler V8 before Shelby approaches them, it just never happened as they had started running the 6 cylinder Ford Zephyr engine. AC were the first to fit the Ford 260 after Shelby confirmed that was the engine he'd agreed with Ford to use. The thing is that AC had to borrow an engine and gearbox for fitment to the car (difficult in the UK as they were hard to get.) After installing and running the car they then took the engine and gearbox out and gave it back to the party they'd acquired it from. Only then did they send the car to the USA.
After receiving the car Shelby and a couple of friends fitted an awaiting engine and gearbox in just a few hours.

It was a AC Bristol with a 289 Ford motor, not built by Shelby!

On Jay Lenos you tube website the many colors tale was debunked by guys who were there . gotta wonder, also Carroll went to /gm first and they refused him , Carroll also built a few special Chevy powered rebodied vettes and GM told him to stop.Great man,, Had the honor of shaking his hand back in 92 and thanking him.

Epic stories of man and machine achieving unbelievable success, despite the odds like no money, no racing car(yet!), bankrupt chicken farm and he needs a NEW HEART! As a "Texan", he has an XXL set of Dreams (not the set of... you were thinking?) and VISIONS! A TEXAN SIZED STORY & VISION! I wish I had VISIONS like that man! I'll start small, I need his EYE DOCTORS telephone, email, etc! A good start I think!?

ac bristol, chrysler powered sunbeam tigers, wow you would think that us old guys that were around when all this happened would know all that bullshit. sounds like the kids telling each other you can get a ticket for driving barefoot. at least glad for readers to share their bullshit stories about the great cars of the past.
