In response to picking up disable passenger’s for low pay nobody talks about wheelchair’s with urine soak seats and cushions I have handled wheelchairs that reeked of urine so with that I agree with you 100% we don’t get paid enough for that.
Good point Tim. I myself am disabled and use a cane. I cannot help someone load their heavy ass wheel chair into my car. Uber should have a special service just for these people in a separate category that I can deselect in the app so that I don't take these rides. Uber Assist is coupled to the Uber X it should not be like this
I had a rider who was paralyzed waist down, I’m disabled also with lower back issues, and the rider needed assistance so I told him if I can’t then we will be calling the fire department for a lift assistance.
I totally agree. I am disabled and there's no way I am going to get out and put a wheelchair in the back of my trunk. They need to categorize this and have that available for drivers and for passengers to pick. But there's a lot of disabled drivers that will not bother with this, me for one!!
Blame the apps not the drivers they don’t pay us enough to go through this situation if they pay us we would help you out drivers are not running a non profitable organization not worth taking it
Once again we do not get paid enough to drive a normal trip, if they paid us 4x what they do now drivers would not mind doing extra, esp if they stopped stealing the tips, just like the bs 5 and 7 minute wait times, all bs
Most drivers will bounce on a wheelchair p/u just like they would bounce when you see 2 full shopping carts and a baby on top, not discrimination, not being paid to do what they are asking
Exactly! It is also not just disabled passengers short trips as well because there’s no profitability in it for the driver unless it’s to achieve a bonus. Otherwise it’s not even worth it to take a trip that’s less than 2 miles to the destination. That is why I tell them I’ll give you five dollars cash if you can get me to where I need to go. They don’t cancel the ride, they are more than willing to take me to where I need to go.
The rides that are paid by the insurance companies are some of the lowest fares paid out there. I had a pax complain that I was the 4th driver who was assigned to her. She was frustrated and annoyed, but grateful that I followed through (I wanted to complete a certain amt of rides to qualify for a weekly ride challenge). Since I saw this was a teaching oppty so she understood what dynamics were involved with her ride request (low pay and not tipped), she was appreciative of the explanation. Now, did this prompt her to tip after? LOL, hell no!
Actually, if you pickup/drop-off is an legitimate medical transport(paid by insurance) and the passenger is often asked whether they're okay with Uber/Lyft and their answer should be if they need any kind of assistance, "No, I need a medical transport driver don't send Uber/Lyft". I was going to pick a pax for $4 and it turned out to be a medical pickup. The third party connector kept blowing up my phone with text messages about how to handle the pickup. When I got there, all I saw was a line of wheel chairs and a lot confusion. Immediately, I canceled! Another time, I took a $18 ride to find out the patient was on life support, oxygen tank and electrical heart pump. I had to help her into the vehicle, untangle tubes she was sitting on and put her roller seat into the trunk. The whole time I didn't say a word, I just listened to all the pumping and clicking, praying I didn't hit a bump or take a turn too fast. Thinking back on it, I'm not sure how wise it was to take that amount of responsibility or consequences if trouble were to arise.
Tim I think I may have read somewhere where a lot of these medical places have contracts so what they are being charged compared to what the drivers are making I think is an even bigger disparity than we normally deal with. I would really like to know what these medical facilities are paying? Tim this may be worth you researching it would be very very interesting. Take care keep up the great work.
Not being insensitive to handicap but I am absolutely not assisting anyone I'm not getting paid for it I'm not trained for it I can lift somebody wrong and hurt them or myself somebody can say I touched them inappropriately no thanks
I drive a slightly lifted Jeep pickup and this does limit who can get in without assistance at times. I do have drop down steps that help a great deal, but you have to be able to get in, then I don’t mind reasonable assistance for walkers and light wheelchairs. I’m 67 so I won’t be trying to manhandle YOU into the vehicle however, but if you need to hold onto me for balance and such, that’s all good.
Most of the time, we don't know until we arrive or notified upon approach. At that point, you don't want to be an ASS, so we just take them. Boston Market
I’m more worried about the legal liability we would incur if something happens to someone in a wheelchair trying to get in or out of a vehicle. You think Uber pays those lawsuit costs? As if!! Why take the chance for $6?
Uber send me a message saying that I have to help those on wheelchairs and acomódate it inside the car 😢 I’m a disabled person either way lumbar issue on need of surgery, how I’m carrying something so heavy plus there are special vans for that ripe of service “ I don’t mind helping but I can’t” and to HELP is not the reason I’m driving. Uber have to stop for real 🤦🏽♀️ and the actitud of customers lately lord 😞
The people that discriminate. Is the ones I love. Because these passengers come in my car. I go above and beyond for them. And I'm the one that got $50 tip. Because these passenger complain about other drivers not helping them.
I understand your point, I have been doing this for 10 years and driving taxi before ride share became a thing, I would say majority of walkers and standard wheelchairs are easy to handle, if I drive a car for transporting people that’s part of the game, at least make an attempt, but yes some riders have motorized scooter or medically in need someone professional to transport them, the elderly person on walker could be my mom or your dad, they gotta get somewhere too but everything has a limit as well, Uber doesn’t pay enough but it doesn’t mean to disregard people in need as well, that’s just my opinion, as much as money is the most important thing in this country but it’s not everything
Well said. Just keep in mind, putting the needs of others over your earning potential is the definition of charity. Uber should not be putting drivers in a predicament where they are doing the job to help others more than themselves.
@@Thehandsomeliberal true Tim, but at the end of the day this is taxi service, helping an elderly to get on to your car and fold a walker and put it in the back won’t take that much time, also at least in a big market like Dallas that’s where I am you won’t get these trips very often unless you wanna hang up by medical district that’s where most of the hospitals are located. At the end of the day if you do a $5 trip taking a grandpa home or to store or whatever and they thank you and they smile at you could make everyone’s day nicer, but I got your points, there are some people that there is no ends to their demands or they had bad attitude and believe you are their slave. I enjoy your videos please keep it up
It’s all about the time really. Those trips take longer and there is no comp for it. Most disabled passengers I’ve worked with are medical rides and they don’t have any idea how much it costs (because insurance or welfare pays) let alone what the driver makes. There won’t be any tips. A driver is an idiot if they don’t cancel every medical ride they receive.
So, who is responsible if you are trying to help someone in you vehicle and the disabled person falls. Can the person sue you? Are you at fault? Are you insured through Uber if the person is injured while you are just trying to "help" and not a medical transport vehicle? I had this happen to me where the rider in a racing type wheelchair that needed to be broken down asked me to help him into the vehicle. I didn't feel comfortable with that at all. While it may be helpful, I'm thinking who is liable if the person is injured.
Tim it's not necessarily about pay but it's about us drivers are not insured for medical transports. If they ask for assistance getting into their home and we somehow mess up and they hurt themselves we're open for a lawsuit and we're not insured for that. Another thing you have to remember not all discrimination is illegal what we have to reference is are we illegally discriminating against these folks and we are not because discrimination is not illegal. If you're in the Air Force and you want to be a jet pilot and your 6 ft 9 sorry you're not going to be able to do it because you won't be able to fit on the jet and in this situation you're discriminating against the tall person but it's not illegal. If the pilot happens to be 4 ft 8 probably too small to be on the jet to fly and he will be legally discriminated against so we need to make that distinction. They should allow for drivers to get the proper insurance and then the rides to be properly compensated when we receive them and then we can choose whether we want to add that to our repertoire when we're deciding to pick X, XL comfort and so on.
I cant lift more than 15 pounds. Medical notice for it too. Man showed up and his chair weighed 60lbs. I couldnt pick it up. Plus he had SO MUCH STUFF with him. I felt bad but cancelled. I couldn't lift his chair🤷♀️
@@ThehandsomeliberalDenver market. The amount of medical transport out here is insane. I dont respond to any hospital pickups or dropoffs anymore. I had a VERY large man. As long as they can get in and out on their own and load their equipment…cool…but does Uber pay if they scratch my vehicle in doing so. I won’t help them if it involves touching…don’t touch me and I won’t touch you. There’s just too many liabilities involved.

what about drivers that have disabilities? I was recently injured and had to have surgery. I had to use a walker but my doctor said I could drive for uber if I wanted. I talked to uber support. there is no system in place to identify disabled drivers or disabled passengers so they aren't matching up two disabled people. how am I supposed to fold up a wheelchair and put it in the back if I'm on a damn walker with a broken hip?
It isnt really discrimination when the driver may also be disabled and unable to physically help the passenger. A lot of us drivers do the best we can, but we are drivers. NOT medical transport. I stopped picking up methadone clinic riders after the guard at the door stood there and watched while I unloaded a walker, two heavy oxygen tanks, a huge bag and help the rider out of my car. The ENTIRE TIME, I struggled to keep my balance, not drop my own cane and not injure myself. I guess his job is to be absolutely useless and observe and NOT help. These folks need medical transport. They need able bodied drivers and attendants who are adequately trained and paid. The 3-4 bucksIi was paid was not worth it.
Every situation is different. Use common sense. If it's to much trouble don't do it. If it only takes a couple of minutes and it doesn't put you in a potentially bad situation do it.
Uber/Lyft discrimination disable people, because Uber/Lyft doesn't have single wheelchair car, and the corporate of Uber/Lyft doesn't afford to buy wheelchair, very cheap ass corporate. They want drivers to purchase wheelchair over $60,000. BS
