Awesome video, and the USCG has some incredible people. When I see how old some of the fleet is, it makes me sick. They definitely need more money!!! I heard that over by me, there were 3 helicopters, and 2 were down because they couldn't get them repaired. It's a sin. Not only in war, the coast guard is probably the most useful branch of the military in peace time. For every rescue mission we hear about on the news, there are dozens that go unreported. It's a full time job with kids (men) in phenomenal condition, with the guts to match. As every boater has told me, "I hope I never need them, but it's great to know they're there if I do".

lots of military training comes across animals. Not sure how they'd handle sharks specifically but I'm sure they have protocols to respond. For example Marine Snipers out by Pendleton while practicing sneaking through the bushes and staying absolutely still, sometimes get all kinds of rattlesnakes literally slithering on top of them sometimes
The swimmers will hold their hand on top of their head and make the universal shark fin sign. That will indicate a predator is near which will initiate the emergency pick-up. Doesn't have to be a shark, could be an orca or even a seal.
what happens if a shark comes, isnt scary for them to be in the water knowing that at any time something could come from the bottom and take their lives away?
Froshe Fresh after college this is what i wanna do for at least 4 years, i wanna save peoples lives but i seen videos of people surfing and the sharks taking them of the board, are u sure a shark is not just gonna grab u from underneath what if u accidentally hit them with the flippers or when u land
no they don't teach you how to fight off sharks. if a shark comes, and the helicopter crew sees it first they will come in for an emergency pickup. if the RS (rescue swimmer) sees it first, he/she will give an emergency pickup signal.
No One actually, found the answer on another video. It's a technique they use to surprise the survivor and grab hold of them. They use it when they think there's a chance of the survivor panicking, or being tired to the point of losing lucidity.
Nicolas, it is one of the ways we approach survivors. Less chance a panicked survivor will be able to grab onto us. We have ways to get a panicked survivor away or off of us, but faster and safer to not have to be in the situation in the first place.

J L I agree with both of you. It's important that before you go in you realize that you may lose your life and accept it so that you don't freeze up when you really are trying to save someone. And also, of course you need to be smart because like you said, if you get hurt how are you gonna help the other person. Your both right

There is a risk of shark attack, depending on where your stationed (very minimal). However, I've been doing it for over 20 years and have never had a problem. Most of my time has been spent in Alaska, as well as the north west coast (of the lower 48) and north east coast. I've had more issues with sea lions then anything else, and there just curious.

Frank Moncion Then you use the techniques you learned at the academy. They teach you how to fight off sharks plus you have equipment.
