I've always admired folks that can do stuff like this. I know I can't. I have the fingers of a concert pianist, but, I have co-ordination like someone slammed the lid on them! It's a disability so there's not much I can do there. I picked up modelling and painting quite quickly as I could work in a 3D space. I took Art at school, but, I sucked at still life and flat painting. I couldn't translate what I saw in 3D to a 2D plain. Models fell into place as I could directly add things I could picture in my head onto the parts. I got good in the 90's, then stopped, but, thankfully all the skills are still there.
I understand your frustration Roger… my eyes are pretty much shot and only work reasonably well in the morning. By lunchtime and especially after sunset I just can’t see my scale models or the computer screen very clearly even with 3X prescription glasses. Some days my gout/arthritis makes my hands shake badly so modelling is impossible. I do play piano but can’t stand for long enough to get much played these days due to motorcycle injuries and gout. Need to lower my Roland from the standing position I am used to after playing in bands for 50 years, down to a seated position, which I find awkward and unnatural. Still we push on and try to get things done. That video took me 8 days to shoot with many takes, as my shaky hands got worse, or my vision blurred so much I could not see what I was doing. It is just a sad fact of getting older.
Thanks Bill… they came from my need for a quick simple tool to do what was a time consuming and boring repetitive task. I was too lazy to do all that knot tying, and at the small scales you don’t really need it.
Good day Harry i have not built a ship since the 1960s i must give it a go your ships look amazing your a true master of our hobby as always happy modelling and all the best from here in the UK 👍
On a large wooden model it can be done fairly easily, but on a small scale plastic kit it becomes extremely fiddly. So that is where my tools work well. Thanks for your kind comment Edward.
And there all done and look good on the vids all glue to the mast get the rest of the ratline dead bug size there just great little jig to work with and easy
My HMS Endeavour (Airfix) has the Heller rat harp in it. The directions included in the instructions are very vague at the best. I've been waiting for your option to do the rat lines.
Hi Harry great idea with your tools for doing rigging and deadeyes can you tell if they will work for the Panart Royal Caroline 1/47 scale that i am in the process of building many thanks for any help.
Yes Stephen I should be able to create tools for the Royal Caroline. However I would need some dimensions from your kit, then it is just a process of using CAD with those numbers to create my tools to fit. houdinimodels.com/harp/
Hi Harry, these a really good idea and well thought out. Just a thought and it may of already been suggested. have you thought about printing you dead eye jigs in something like TPU to allow for size variation as TPU is slightly stretchy. Downside is that it is a bit harder and slower to print. Cheers, Mark
I love the different sizes dead run And 1/100 victory hms and the dead eyes I'm into it now when they come out I'll have to look for these ship 5mm dead runs the dead bug another great tool the rat line I'll look into different sizes as well do they come into different sizes to buy also 4mm rat harp
Hi Mick.. my postage charge is a flat rate of $10 USD for each order. Prices for tools vary depending on the ship rig complexity. Best look at my online shop and choose the tools to suit your model ship. houdinimodels.com/tools
Hi Albert… I have all but 3 back orders left to CAD, 3D print and post. Yours is one of them and will be done this weekend and posted next week. I will email you the tracking number. The large number of new unique ship model orders I had to first research, calculate measurements, then CAD the tools, has slowed my output. Luckily now I have collected a library of many model ship designs so repeat orders I have the CAD completed for are much faster. Thank you for your patience.
I've been working on something similar but yours just takes the cake. I've been 3d printing ships instead of building scale. Have you considered making longer versions that can pivet at the top to set your own angles for non-scaled ships?
Tried that but it doesn't work unless you can hold the legs apart firmly at a fixed distance, which negates the ability to mount on your model under the shrouds, and that was the Rat Harps primary purpose. You also need to know the scale to set the ratline spacing and angles otherwise the lines are not level but fan out. That is why I went 3D design. So I could use a basic layout and adjust it for each ships scale, mast height and channel board width.
You previously ordered an Airfix 1/150 Generic Rat Harp. So if you want a Dead Run set to match then order the ‘small’ Dead Run and select Airfix, scale 150, and ship name General, in the checkout window
@@HarryHoudiniModels Hoy, Thank you Sir. Looking forward to ordering some. I build model ships for a living, 29 years now, everyday all day. This ship really looks good. I just ordered a few of the Uni Pasco pens, thank you for introducing those to me. Thank you for all you do. My name is Jimmy Frost. I take care of some of the largest model ships in the World. I build for a restaurant/Natical Museum. I cant believe I do this for a living.

Hi Bradley. I have setup a simple direct payment portal which may be easier for you than the online shop. I know what sizes you need for your Dead Run to suit the generic Airfix 1/144 Rat Harp you bought before. Hope this helps. houdinimodels.com/pay/

Good on you Sammy I had a frigging good time doing it!
Pressing der buttons...interesting vid. 😊

Magnificent skill and results. Very clever tools. Can hardly fathom the effort to do the rigging free hand without them. Thank you, cheers mate.

Superb!

Interesting - Haven't done a ship model yet but interested to try.
They can be a bit of work but are very satisfying once you are done.
I would like to buy a full set of your jigs. How much for a complete set?
You can get the Combo from my online store which includes the Dead Runs, Rat Harp and a free Dead Bug for $35 USD plus postage

Nice video. Like the design, what software do you use.
I have been using Ondsel to make the tool designs then Prusa Slicer for the print files

I am now printing them in PETG. Much more heat resistant and stronger.
Harry, do you have the equivalent for rigging of aircraft?
That would be a great idea for WWI bi-planes

That’s ok it only takes one order at a time.. just email what each ship scale and make is so I can find the right templates. harry@houdinimodels.com

Does it make posting them all together a bit easier and maybe any cheaper?
It helps… I lose more than half the actual postage price of $28 to the .U.K. from the cost of the tools.
