Always a pleasure to see and hear Steve and Herb together. Bravo! The insight and down to earth talk is always fun and appreciated. Big output amps and the headroom is my thing. Old or new. Take care.
Loved this conversation, guys. It’s always a great pleasure to hear the wonderful duo of Steve and Herb talk shop, and the conversation always seems to go deeper than just surface level. It’s interesting how so many of us are such music lovers to such a huge degree, that we go out of our way and buy equipment to get closer to that music. Whether your main source is analog or digital, we’re so much more similar than different. We should celebrate that. Thanks again, Steve and Herb. Appreciate you guys a ton.
These two characters are two of the nicest guys in hi-end audio. They have such a wealth of experience and they're really not gear snobs like some reviewers. These guys were around when I was just a kid (back when dinosaurs ruled the earth) and they were really fun to listen to, but most of all, they really understand the joy of listening to the music itself and not just the joy of listening to the gear. These two guys listen to FAR more different kinds of music than just about any reviewers in the industry. Based on their recommendations, I have heard more music I never would have listened to on my own and many of those have become favorites that I still listen to.
When you find your system boring, it’s not your system, but the music you are listening too. On a lighter note. “Why dope the speaker cones when you can dope the listeners?”
Just want to say thank you to both of you ! Love how open minded you are. Something that I think is really lacking (not just in the audiophile world) today…
Great stuff guys! I was fortunate enough to be an audio salesperson back in the late 80's. It allowed me to listen to a lot of different stuff. When you get that opportunity, you really hone in on what type of sound you like for yourself. Now I have a system that I really enjoy. It isn't super expensive, but I was able to piece it together to my taste. That is where the joy is for an audiophile. Now I just want to listen to all the music I can and just enjoy the artists and not worry about trying to make it sound any better. It already sounds great! Just give me more to listen to!
I really appreciated the cordial presentation by both Steve and Herb. It speaks volumes. This duo talks more about the human experiences tied to the audiophile's journey.
Every time a female reviewer appears, a few old men get too excited and scare her away. Then everyone loses out on what would be a unique perspective. Some people like being objectified, the *vast* majority do not
Gteat conversation between two old friends. To touch on one point, I appreciate Steve's taste in music not because it aligns somewhat with mine, but by listening to his reviews of audio gear he's turned me on to music I didn't know about.
All new Popori Acoustics Loudspeakers will be at the 2024 Capital AudioFest in Room 840, Steve you don't want to miss this one... maybe the New Holy Grail of Speakers ?!
My father worked at a HiFi store in the 60's. I can remember as a young lad my father and the store owner discussing soundstage width and depth as we listened to recordings they made live to 2-track of big bands. Wish I had some of those recordings.
I feel the same way about original mono audio and films. The newer mixes are so cleaned up and filtered they lack the 'soul' it's just too clean and sterile. When I go back and listen to the sound that came on something older like a laserdisc my ears are happy again. Probably nostalgia but it's what I like
Thanks, guys! I’m approximately your age, I’ve been listening to music, and fascinated with the gear, since I was 8 years old. I love you both! ❤ P.S. Hey, Steve, I just got a pair of Forte IVs, and your recommendation was significant, in making the choice. 🎉👍👍
What ever your interest or hobby are its always interesting to get other like minded people's opinion.. Listening to you to guys and the show of people in that room its mostly about the end game for most the music and your passion for Hifi equipment that we all love and cherish 🙏
Steve, how eloquent so hard to address such a complex equation I missed the show - Great interview (conversation)with Herb- Great presentation oh have a nad c3050 - stereofile budget component of the year, not bad with a pair of KEF r3 metas in my space
Young people's music is not audiophile music. They grew up listening to compressed mp3's on systems that have no tone controls so most have never heard a great sounding system. They pick up a pair of $30 ear buds which make most music sound the same. I live in an area where good stereo shops are far and few between. Best buy has no listening rooms unless they are a Magnolia dealer and their listening rooms are intimidating for the newcomer. Where you live in the big city there is such a rich environment of stores to listen to different systems. Most music here in the middle of the country in the middle of Iowa a majority of music, especially younger people, is consumed in their cars, which nearly everybody has one because of the lack of public transportation. Just the other day my fairly new neighbors that live in the apartment below me were sitting outside listening to a cheap Bluetooth speaker so I invited them in to listen to my modest system and it blew them away. They has never listened to a true stereo with left and right speakers and a soundfield that was deeper and wider than what a all in one cheap system put out. Fun to watch their reaction to how good music can sound.
Great talk! I started my audiophile journey a little later than most (almost 50) but having a great time. It blows me away how much great music there is and how easy it is these days to find it! Speaking of, what was the radio station steve mentioned?
Thanks for recording this conversation with Herb for those of us who were unable to attend. As to electronica, you should try some Spiffy Man if you’re looking for soulful. He has a limited discography as he’s currently taking a break to produce and promote other similar artists but it’s worth a listen. Kind of the Brian Eno of the Synthwave genre, IMO.
Where can we get examples even of the digital remasters or releases of the recordings that Herb was talking about having been made on that presto cutting lathe?
Hello Steve. Thank you for your channel. It's always informative and entertaining. And you have great chemistry with Herb, so, I really enjoy that, too. For other various reasons, I also view three other YT reviewers - 1/ HiVi Nyws Channel, 2/ Jay's Iyagi and 3/ iiwireviews (Is It Worth It Reviews). I do not view other YT audio reviewers. While they no doubt appeal to many other viewers, with my preferences being skewed heavily towards analog/LP records, I guess I just can't relate to them very much. You and these 3 other YT channels all share a love and respect for analog - and that's something I definitely can relate to. Just FYI, I did not fully know what Herb was referring to when he spoke of the The Presto. When you placed the image of it on the screen, I knew I saw that item before. It took me a while but, I found that item on a YT clip of Gene Krupa and his orchestra from 1948, in the movie called Glamour Girl, which featured Caroline Grey. In one sequence, Gene is recording in a studio and this is where they showed The Presto unit in operation. Really cool to see what Herb was describing. A big thanks guys for that historical reference as it was a real part of the developmental history of the recording/sound reproduction process. Also, your recollections about "Soundstage", Steve; going back in time to the recording event. Insightful stuff. There's something special about someone "being old" in this industry........ ;-)
Beyond Jay, most younger utubers who have gained clout seem to be reviewing in the headphone specific space. The reasons are obvious. Be it at the LA region cam jam or going to a place like the soon to be no more, Schiiter in Valencia, you see lots of younger sound nerds and audiophiles. The top utuber bridge between the 2 happens once in a while so perhaps more of that crossover is needed? I know it would help those like me, who are into both and/or who lean more into one area. Thanks for the vid!
I agree with Herb about rooms.Using the room as an excuse for poor performance isn't always applicable when domestic settings are also far less than ideal much of the time.
I so wanted to meet you! I just adore you ( Hope I can say that, I’m straight married you know what I mean..) and your comments insights and have subscribed to you for years. Really look forward to meeting you someday. Proud Klipsch Jubilee owner but agree with you we all like love things differently but what sounds good or great to us with that soul and dynamics is what matters. Thanks for being you!
So I have a VAC PA 100 100 tube amp and ARC LS15 tube pre amp that I bought in 1996 and still use it to this day! I have Maggie's and towers speakers with built-in powered subs, plus two SVS Ultra 13 subs I can't listen without my low Hz 😅 Oh I'm restoring a BMW 1973 2002tii
That was great, thank you so much, Steve and Herb. I like your point of views and your experiences about hifi. Interesting and informative as always. Congratulations for 150 years of experience. Keep healthy and keep going on with your good work. Thanks. Greetings from Germany 🎂🎁☺️
Very large crowd in that room to see and hear them. Herb needs a clip on mic so he can be free of moving his head away from that hand held mic. Herb is great!
Here's to Steve and Herb for their integrity. Never do I feel like there is an agenda in equipment reviews or "audiophilic" observations in general. Contrast this with others who might say something to the effect of, "Don't waste your money paying the big bucks for a piece of gear in this category" and then turn around and push a piece of gear of the same type they are selling that's every bit as expensive and classify it is a "steal" or, perhaps something less overt, like a "sleeper." Both of you guys maintain genuine enthusiasm for this hobby and the industry after so much time in as hobbyists and professionals. You've earned your credibility. Thank you for treating us all with respect.
I'm always on the hunt for new music, just about all genres. I can only do the been there done that music in small doses or when I'm in a mood for it. That said I'll take the new amplifier and new drives to play with
True, or the kind of people that buy 27 Corvettes. Or, the kind of people who obsess about sports. Or, kind of people searching for the perfect golf club.
Love to hear how elevation affects the listening experience (would a system sound better at sea level or at 5000 +/- elevation?) Also, should a person spend "big money" ($5K on up) on equipment if it is going to be placed in an "open concept" area (both kitchen & living area) where smoke, varying humidity, and micro-floating grease occur when cooking?
I swear I heard the guy at the beginning say "I'm actually pleasantly surprised to see all of the ladies in the audience, I know they all have herpes" 😂
I internally groaned, it felt a little sexist to me but I might be over sensitive. Honestly, most of Steve & Herb's would be groupies are MEN. And I count myself among that number.
For me the best way to learn about audio is/was to see how good a system you can build with the least amount of money. That allows and forces one to learn about parts, synergy, tuning, acoustics etc.
Great advice here. With the right cd player, the right receiver and the right bookshelf speakers the sound can blow you away. And the speakesr do the heavy lifting in my one example.
Agreed! That very path led me to DIY. It started with cables and a few speaker tweaks. Now everything front to back was built from scratch with my own two hands and point to point wiring (outside of digital front end).
Audiophile = Old white man chasing the impossible……. The term is so pretentious and divisive. I like you both and I’ve purchased gear and music based on reviews and suggestions that you both have offered up and I thank you for that. OK, I’ve said my piece. Thanks, guys!
I was thinking at the transparency on the singing at the end of the video, scary stuff, even they were scared how that room sounds, those microphones... maaan... please neve use them again.
I think you guys should have planned your presentation better and included more interesting and useful content. This comes off as pandering to the audience. Sad - you both have a lot to offer.
When Steve and Herb converse on Steve's channel, it's very popular. They review some very exclusive equipment, but Steve especially always makes a point of telling people that their systems are just great if they make us happy. Their banter(not blather) is very open and not trying to exclude people from the hobby. Many "audiophiles" tend to be very wealthy and very exclusive, and I appreciate this type of situation where they welcome newcomers that normally would be looked down upon. The only person your system has to make happy is YOU.
Hey MuskRat. Not sure about anyones ego but I was at the show and enjoyed this little talk a lot. Through the years I've learned a lot by opening my ears and mind to new ideas. Give it a try sometime.
🙏Thank you Steve for saying those kind encouraging words and happy belated birthday 🎉
Thanks guys😊I’d subscribe to a weekly Herb and Steve podcast.

I can listen to these guys talk all day. Thoroughly entertaining and great points made. 👌
That's great thank you so much.
"the hardest thing to do...is to be yourself and to trust your own judgement"
yeah
Once I did this, I went back to Klipsch, not caring what anyone said or thinks anymore
i think he ment easiest thing to do, as audiophile are rampid in believing their own ears and refusing to look at evidence :P

Audiophile. One who collects records and other forms of music One who listens to music with great passion. You are not special.
