I was 11 in '67 and it seems inconceivable to me that this is the first time I've heard this song. Unbelievable. Dang me, well while all of England was swinging, I must have been chug-a-lugging because the King of The Road snuck this gem past me. Now it's Christmas Eve 2024 and this is truly an awesome present for an old man. Merry Christmas Everyone!
The first time I heard this song I remembered some friends from when I was in high school. We were in the shed behind their house and there was a Lionel train set set up that was covered with dust. One of the guys said, "That was Steven's, we can't touch it." Their brother was the first from our town to die in Vietnam, and their mother kept the train set as a shrine. It was one of my first inklings of real grief.
This was one of my late Grandfather's favorite Christmas songs....he was always Santa to me. He passed in 2007, but before then I sang this song in dedication to him at my college concert. No one knew I was singing it.......not a dry eye in the place. I miss him dearly, but having this song around helps me to feel closer to him at this time of year. *Still believe in Santa*
I love singing this song to my three boys during Christmas. May God bless them with the best memories of Christmas when they hear this song in their old age one day.
Roger Miller, one of the VERY few recording artists that could go from absolutely silly to deadly serious in the space of one song. Most artists get stuck in one type of music, but not Roger and those VERY few.
I love this Roger Miller Christmas song. His voice is perfect for this childhood song. Love it. Thank you Roger Miller. Rest in Peace. Your legacy lives on.❤❤❤❤❤
I enjoy this song, it reminds me when I received a train set, coming from a sack carried by a man dressed in White & Red. Thanks, mom and dad for making Christmas wonderful for us through the years. I miss you, mom!
I was born in 1967 and will soon be 52 yrs old. I have loved this song since I heard it as a child. I am a District Manager, now, with many responsibilities, but I often think of the wonderful simpler times just like this song. I can just shut my eyes and this song takes me back to those happy days as a child!! God has Blessed us all richly!!! Can I get an AMEN?
First heard the Nana Mouskouri version of this song, what a joy to discover it was a Roger Miller original! Now it's a go-to favourite for me at karaoke clubs around Christmas time.
Roger Miller was my daddies favorite artist..we grew up with all his music. Like many others here this song takes me way back..me and my sister in the back of daddy's 63 chevy...mama building our anticipation as we drove around our little town looking at lights...pressing our noses against frosty windows....anticipating our Christmas presents....good memories....and I am making the same for my little ones....
I have loved this song since it came out. I was just 13,rather alienated from others at the time,as my parents were touring musicians. So there was only myself for company. When it came on the radio,I would move close to it and just listen quietly. This song made me feel warmide for some reason,and I've never forgotten it's comfort. :}
Aye, it is good. Odd how it's never heard in public. The same with 'Sweet Gingerbread Man,' which I suppose is technically not a Christmas song. I however think the subject material is such that it should qualify. I also like Snoopy and the Red Baron's 'Christmas Bells.' Aye, it's a funny song, yet also one with deep meaning.
We sang this song in my high school choir. Now, I sing it as a lullaby to my boy. It is a favorite.

The first time I heard this song was in. 1991. The radio station I was working for was the legendary KYNO-Fresno. It was ALL CHRISTMAS from Thanksgiving day to Christmas day at 11:59pm.I love Roger Miller...one of the best guitarist from the 50's till his passing!
I'm 16, and this song never gets old, I use to listen to it every Christmas back when I was younger, living in Guyana. My mom was looking for the CD with this song on it today, and couldn't find it, I'm so happy I found it on UA-cam. Thanks for uploading it :).
Suddenly it's 1962 and me and my aunt Pibby are decorating the tree. Big colored light bulbs, real tinsel and that smell that can only come from a real tree!!! My mom and granny in the kitchen making doughnuts! I cry everytime this song is played.....and I'm proud of it!!!
I haven't listened to this since I was a kid in the backseat of my parents car. Maybe 2000? Ish. Was told this was one of my favorite songs. 27 years old now. 28 in a few weeks. Time flies.
This is my son's favorite Christmas song. He has loved it since he was a baby and he is 20 years old now. It is such a treasure to pass old songs like this along to our children as it was one of mine too. My mother sang it to me when I was a little girl too. Thanks for the memories.
I love this song and look forward to hearing it every year. It reminds me of how Christmas was filled with so much wonder and magic when I was growing up.
to all of the dads who allowed their memories of their own little boys opening toy trains each Christmas morning. What glorious memories both the daddy's and daddy's little boys missed. Sad song for some. Thanks for the memories, Roger Miller... a lovely old tune. Brings precious memories to so many.
We didn't have a lot of money growing up, especially after my father died but Christmas was always a sacred and magical time. And somehow what little we had was always shared with someone who had even less. We were taught the true meaning of Christmas and the Christ child. I'm thankful for that. I tried to teach my children the same. After thier mother left I tried to emphasize it even more. Thank God, it seems they've embraced this. I pray it will be passed on to future generations.
I never had a son so I could call into the radio station and dedicate this song to him ... until this year! Born December 14, and I darned right had the radio station play it. It made want to cry with loneliness before, but cry with so much love now.
Peggy, Don't know if you will even see this But my Family were huge Fans of Roger's. Wish this kind of Talent was more promoted, but it never really has been. And it depends so much on multiple things. But he sure had a Wonderful voice, and alot of really good songs!! Hope they can still see how much they were Loved on Earth.
This song kills me...😭😭😭😭 reminds me so much of my oldest boy who is 21 now. He will always be my baby too...I was blessed with a girl and 3 boys. My girl was barbie.. oldest boy Trains.. 2nd boy army guys..3rd boy Hot wheels.. ❤
Kenny Huskisson unfortunately, last Christmas I was 17 and I already feel it going by faster and I just don't care about it anymore. I mean I like the holiday for what it was originally about but the rest I don't really care for. Other than the toy trains lol
Roger Miller -- Weather singing a happy or sad or a simply sentimental song, he always got his point across; he always connected with his audience. What a loss when he passed -- R.I.P., Roger. 12/2019
Reminds me of my father he got a train set and we were suppose to set it up together, when he died I was 7 and the train set has been in a box for 61 years, got the engines out for the first time sitting on the bookcase..Merry Christmas everyone
I have loved this song since the 60's. For years, no one played it on the radio at Christmas. Something I couldn't understand at all but the big things were the Electric Light Orchestra and Mannheim Steamroller (which I do love but). About ten years ago, it started showing up again as if someone discovered a hidden gem tucked away in a safe and unseen for years. Roger is gone, but his legacy of great songs remains. This takes me back to the late 40's and early 50's when I couldn't wait for Christmas morning.
This is my son's favorite Christmas song. It seems like just yesterday he was the little boy waiting for Santa. He's in Afghanistan this Christmas. I just had to send him this song.
My Papaw would play this for me every Christmas since I was born (1987) to when he passed (2006) ‘Toy Trains’ is definitely a special Christmas song/moment for me.
+Jenn Maker Not sure if anyone sings it this way, but I think "little one" fits perfectly. That's how my mom used to sing it to me, (even though I'm a guy.) Not that it really matters; it's a nice song, isn't it?
I have known this song for years and have several covers in my holiday mix an never realized that it was Roger's. I have also been a Roger Miller fan going back to the 60's.

Sweeeet! 😊
Merry belated Christmas.
Truly one of the rare classic holiday songs that most radio stations seldom ever play for this time of the year.
I think Steven would want you guys to run the trains. His Mom may have thought that you boys would emulate Gomez Addams.
What a powerful story! A beautiful song for a touchpoint to an important, if sad, memory.
Beautiful story thank you for sharing Rock on Patriot 🇺🇸
Wow. I was born in 68, today is the first time I heard this song
So many young men died for the heroin wars… my dad was in ww2, Korea, Vietnam then he got RIF’d by Nixon and retired. He was tired of war. 😢
This was one of my late Grandfather's favorite Christmas songs....he was always Santa to me. He passed in 2007, but before then I sang this song in dedication to him at my college concert. I love singing this song to my three boys during Christmas. May God bless them with the best memories of Christmas when they hear this song in their old age one day.
Imagine them finding this comment one day 🥺♥️
That's a great plan Alex. I'm sure they'll remember.
Roger Miller, one of the VERY few recording artists that could go from absolutely silly to deadly serious in the space of one song. Most artists get stuck in one type of music, but not Roger and those VERY few.
Very good point. He wasn't locked into one set of emotions or cliches like a lot of others both now and then.

That was wonderfully put together. The montage was just perfect for a great song.
This is such a beautiful song. There is just a purity to it that reminds me of Christmases from my childhood; it makes me sentimental and nostalgic, and I feel like a little boy waiting for Santa to come. ^^
