He also uses his head to clear the thumb block as he is shooting. He ducks his head to the left in everyone of the shots to clear that hand for a clean attack
Nice catch. Watch every instance of him hitting this; he's rolling the head into the thumb post and leading the snap with that post-side shoulder every time. Potentially the presence of the thumb post on his collar side is the queue he's waiting for to hit the snap.
Brilliant world class breakdown is what it is folks. And you already know you can’t get this anywhere else. Not unless you in a top 3 D1 Room or RTC. Let me explain. We all watched the matches right? Sure we all saw it happen. We knew this kid was lighting quick. But to identify pattern of the offensive attack within a few hours is crazy. Then to follow up the finishes step is step is absolutely butter. And to see World Champs unable to stop it, this pure wrestling gold. EYGM Gang Baby. PS: After the Olympics, we did not a tournament like this. Maybe we’ve gotten too cocky? I don’t know but what a wake up call and smack in the face this was for Team USA. It’s back to the lab again boys, the world has gotten better! 🙏🏼
My son 12 also a wrestler from SA, and I follow the top US and Russian wrestlers... it seems that since 2024 Olympics, we must include the Japanese as well!
I think u were spot on we could potentially see this with marcus blaze in a few years comparing how he wrestled with ono, this could be a pretty good rivalry in the coming years
Upvoted and subscribed. Great analysis. By the way, I am now 42 consecutive years living in Japan, and used to wrestle high school and a bit of college in the states back in the 70's (4th in N.C. state high school tournament, '73). Sad to say, but other than the women's Olympic team, men's wrestling gets very little support or coverage by the media here in Japan - which makes the likes of Ono all the more impressive. In a way, they are lone ronin compared to other heavily pushed sports in Japan such as baseball, table tennis, traditional martial arts ... and to a lesser extent, basketball and winter olympic sports. Another by the way ... In Japan, people are introduced by family name first. His given name is pronounced "Masa Nose Kay". Riddle ...what does a non-Japanese say when they draw him in the first bracket of a tournament? ... "Oh no! Masanosuke!" 😂
Was always weird. I taught middle school in Japan for awhile and didn't even know my school had a wrestling club until like a year in, and everyone there knew I was a wrestler. The sport is, like you said, just not supported or popular with the masses there. Hell, one of my students was a pretty good sumotori and he got way more attention than our prefecture champ in freestyle.
@@danielcadwell9812 I am guessing it is even less popular than wrestling. Yet Japan has produced some world-class lightweights and midweights. Not typical Japanese ... very exceptional individuals.
@@boi_mayor I hear you. Although most of my career was at the college level and in schools that I don't think had a wrestling team or club, (Waseda, Geidai, TUJ, and many Women's Colleges) ... I ended my institutional days with a gig as an ALT for Kunitachi (West Tokyo). No wrestling among the 3 Jr Highs, but even though all the students knew that I like, and still play, table tennis ... I didn't even know there was a club until the end of my 2 year contract, and even then, I wasn't invited to come join 'em for a game. Every activity and person was as compartmentalized and subservient to authority as any U.S. boot camp. And still, someone the calibre of Ono manages to emerge. All the more impressive. I looked up his school as Yamanashi Gakuin in Kofu ... maybe a couple of hours drive from my house heading west on the Chuo expressway. Now that I am retired, I am tempted to call up the school tomorrow and ask if he (or the club) needs an interpreter / translator ... but they probably have a token native speaker teaching freshman English.
Him and Musukaev would make for a really interesting matchup. I think Ono is arguably the most impressive wrestler in the world right now, but if there's one guy that can not only stop him, but COUNTER him, it would be Musukaev. My money would still be on Ono, but definitely an interesting match if it ever happens.
@@xalebyaltir6991 I agree. I put Sidakov and Tazhudinov as #1 & #2 P4P for their wins & Olympic title but if I had to copy anyone’s skillset it would be Ono’s. He’s so well-rounded
Have you noticed how loose Ono's collar tie is right before he snaps? First example is easy to see...His hand actually comes off the neck slightly before he whips the head down. It's like a trap where it's not threatening with any real pressure or using it as a control... then he snaps hard getting hands on the floor and he gets an ankle.
The collar tie wrist grip basically eliminates a reattack off of his snap. Can't wait to see how he adjusts to opponents film study strategy in the future.
Sweet man. I specially love the point you make to have confidence in your shot. Most wrestling these days is defensive. Ono is offensive. Exciting and hard to deal with.
I haven't laced up wrestling shoes in around 30 years, but I still get pumped and yell at the screen watching videos. And I still love learning technique. Thank you.
I find it amazing how fast he is and they way hr shoot he should be off balance, but before he get a contact with his opponent he is back in a good position
I notice that if the opponent stays on his knees after the initial snap and tries to face, that Ono will actively push the head/neck away as he circles to finish, preventing the opponent from squaring up. This is clear in the second takedown against Uguev.
Thanks. Love that breakdown. I’m not making excuses for Vito , but in his pre-tournament interview I just thought he seemed kind of down and not really confident., he didn’t seem to have much energy, but maybe it’s just me looking for something. Could just be me because I thought the same thing about Jordan and David
Great. You mention loading up the collar tie but the point is there is a chain of triggered pretensioned springs starting from the backed left foot and rolling up link by link to finally apply the accumulated whipping force from lower body movements to powerfully drag the head down using that collar tie. As in discus or table tennis or other sports mechanics, the source of the energy can be several links in a whip chain and when the links spring sequentially they load up the end effector far behind anything you could do by just pulling your hand down. It’s the pretensioned, sequentially timed spring release bringing out this whip chain effect which makes it a seemingly superhuman level powerful drag. The same happens on a multi-link whip when the whole mechanical force at the whip handle emerges at the tip with conservation of momentum making the small tip accelerate enormously because its mass is so much less than the handle. A little bit of backed foot and hip drag down yields enormous pulling power at the opponent’s neck. Beautifully shown. Thank you!
Great video! I've seen something very similar from a wrestler called mohammad mottaghinia (u20 asian champ, u20 world bronze senior european 5th) Could you maybe do a comparison with him in the next few videos? I feel like you could pick up on more details.

yes, this is called ear snap, Otoguro uses this as well
For anyone interested, this same snap technique is used by H.Alyiev and Otoguro.
it is also interesting to note that he gets his ear to his biceps to clear the opponent`s post on the side of his collar
Incredible video man, I was looking all day for clip of Ono for learn and boom you pop in my feed like magic. Thank you sir
Oh my goodness, another absolute masterpiece

I have learn in MMA to take good hold around the elbow to prevent snaps. Why they just rest the arm so far like at 10:37 Eloyan is doing?
The snap alone helps you into front headlock.
The thing that is amazing is that he is the shorter wrestler.
Dude looked like he was in the matrix out there defying gravity lol
MICIC and his father point out the secret to this move. Its the head use to knock off the thumb block. Game changer

Could you make a foot sweep breakdown
This kinda of reminds me of Marcus Blaze snap to single. Both from square stance. Does anyone else see that?
he fast with it!
great video thanks 🔥
This maneuver requires short , thick legs . Quick down and up motion over a fairly long distance requires very powerful thighs . See tree trunks ?
Would it be just as effective if he attacked the other leg with that same snap?
Japan is amazing 👏
surprised coaches did not scout this before semis
dude swipe that's crazy

How does he snap so good?
Reminds me of otogoru
Dude said he learned the ankle pick on youtube!
What would happen if Ono's opponent tries to do that exact same technique _at the same time_ Ono tries to do it?
