• Kathmandu Food Tour I ...
Taking ahead our food escapades in Nepal, in this episode we are exploring some authentic and traditional recipes from the cities of Kirtipur and Lalitpur. Along with our gracious and genial host Sanam Chitrakar, we visited two very special eateries that specialises in authentic traditional food from different parts of Nepal. This gastronomic journey includes a scrumptious experience from Newa Lahana in Kirtipur and Raithaane in Lalitpur (Patan). Kirtipur is an ancient city teeming with history, heritage, rich culture, hospitality, stunning landscape views and several monuments.
We started with Kirtipur. Situated at the distance of 5km south-west of Kathmandu, it is a center of the Newar culture. Here, Newa Lahana is a community run restaurant and open museum working towards the promotion and conservation of the Newar culture. With fully traditional setting, arrangements and menu, it is a flag bearer in presenting authentic Newari cuisine to the world. As we entered the kitchen, we were greeted by a jolly, dexterous and busy team of local womenfolk dressed in their traditional Haku Patasi. The menu here is quite extensive. We ordered Chatamari(rice pancakes with meat and egg), Samay Bhaji(Snacks Platter), Wo(lentil pancake), Chusya Mushya(grain based snacks platter), Shyapu Mhicha(bone marrow stuffed buffalo tripe) , Yomari(steamed rice cakes with jaggery filling) along with some native rice based liquor. The home style food was fresh and super flavourful. The variety flavours and textures was simply impressive. There is so much dynamism in the cuisine that leaves you gratified. Our ultimate favourite of the lot was the toothsome Yomari. The jaggery oozing out into the mouth from these steamed rice cakes transports you to a blissful zone where its just you and this popular (revered) dessert. The liquor made from fermented rice was strong and too sour for our palette.
From there we went to Lalitpur(Patan) to another special restaurant named Raithaane ( / raithaane . Founded by three passionate young men, it intends to introduce the world to the traditional ingredients and components of the diverse Nepalese cuisines through its super fascinating menu. It focuses on the under appreciated and under rated aspects- be it ingredients or cooking techniques-of Nepal's food traditions. Here we were joined by Prasantha Khanal, one of the co founders who briefed us about the lesser known dishes and ingredients from different parts of Nepal. At his recommendation, we tried some very unusual dishes like Rikikur(savoury potato pancakes), Kanchemba(buckwheat fries) and Chamre Fakse(aromatic rice with pork and wild lichen dish). Prasantha patiently familiarized us with the details of the dishes. The taste and flavours were very unique and unprecedented. Our favourite was the kanchambe with Timmur Chop(dried spice mix made with a local chilli). The experience at Raithaane was gratifying and insightful.
We are grateful to Sanam for taking us around to such amazing places, to the amazing team at Newa Lahana and Raithaane for such endeavour and to Prasantha for all the insights. Till next time keep walking and Keep exploring.

The Nepali hosts and the resturant owners have been very knowledgeable and eloquent. Great series on Nepali food. Shows you that Nepali food shares so many nuanced similarities with Indian and Tibetean food and yet it stands out in it's own personal niche. It's basic, no tadak bhadak, nutition based and unique. Unique. Same thing goes for Nepali architecture too.
@YASH NEGI Nepali.
Where are you from Piyush ?
Yes bro the food of kathmandu was brought by kings who were from bengal/ bihar so the food is a version of bihari food.

Thanks a lot for promoting our newari cuisine.....We newars are greatly well known to nepal for our food nd culture.......We are very proud of us.
Nepalese are very shy people, I know many Nepalese liveing in Hyderabad, they rarely talk about their food, they maintain low profile and simplicity, but somehow successfully integrated local society..... This clip is amazing insight of Nepal cuisine.
For your kind information they are quite around everywhere but they are not shy but we love to make everybody be comfortable at first because we are friendly people still nowadays
Is it so offending calling someone 'shy' ?...... Is so my apologise.
No bro Ananth Srinivas you are right in your words but the thing we mean is that the word 'shy' doesnot perfectly define us.we are somehow quite and friendly🔥.
And you said that we doesnot want to show high profile to other and happy with what we have.you are absolutely right bro👍
@@ananthlebur1965 It's not offending at all. Thankyou for your kind words. I don't know why people misunderstands people who is actually being honest and kind.
Thanks to you again.
Love from Nepal🇳🇵🙂
@MY NAME IS surprising question, however majority of them I know are Nepali citizens with nagarik card, I think it is citizenship ID like aadhar, I also admit equal number of Nepalis made Hyderabad their permanent home, many hold aadhar cards n ration cards, I know many hold passports too, nobody asks them why settled there, they are never questioned about their origins..... They speak fluent Hindi, and local language n dress behave like locals...... During my schooling days45 years back, I observed Nepalese often seen doing security jobs distinctly wearing a national cap and carry a medium size kukhri...... Now none wear the cap nor khukri..... Now they are very well dominantly settled in hotel, restaurants industry..... They are trusted lot in the industry.
बहोत अच्छा खाना। और जो कोई भी ये काम ट पढ़ रहा है में प्राथना करता हूं कि उनके माता पिता सौ साल जिए ।
The guy on red seems like a cultural ambassador and the same time his language skills is really good as a Newari speaker from Kathmandu I can tell his newari is perfect. His English,Nepali and Hindi must be good too even though I didn't hear him speaking Hindi. He is also a foodie. Wow this guy is genius.
He is a Nepali chef name chitrakar
The diverse variety of food and their rich culture and heritage is shown in an amazing way
Loved this edition. Thanks for exploring the traditional food of our first Nations of Nepal (Kathmandu). That Dai in red t-shirt is indeed the star of the show.
Do hell with Politics..what a video..what a timing..
Love you guys ❤️
Exactly my man. The feud in the comment sections on politics between the ignorant bunch of our countries really gives me a headache as well. Anyways take care.
Very nice Nepali host👍👍👍👍. He comforted anubhav sapra like a brother when he felt discomfort from rice beer😊. It shows that he is a good human being👍👍. Very delicious food👌👌👌
Greetings from Arequipa PERU: Surprising visit to Nepal very peculiar country its cuisine and drinks incredible. Thanks SUCCESS.
welcome man. respect PERU
It's really great to see people trying to preserve and promote traditional recipes 👍👍
Thanks for all because you are promoting our food and culture it help to visit Nepal 2020.
Love the young chef/restauranteur who is clearly passionate about preserving regional Nepalese cuisines!
Good to see something other than just Newari cuisine represented here.
Kathmandu is a very old civilization, its history goes back to the times when Mahadev carried Sati in his back and her organs kept falling apart. Kathmandu was one of those places, that's why we have Guheswari in Kathmandu. Generations of rajas and maharajas had ruled this place. If you pay close attention, it has a very similar vibe to Varanasi. Especially near Pashupatinath.
Wow I'd never learnt so much about my homelands cuisine. Thanks for making this video!
Awesome... So many of your videos we have watched but this was really the first one where we got to know each and every ingredient explained wonderfully.
Great video and great Nepali hosts
The guide with Anupam is very nice and knowledgeable.
Another excellent video. I am sure not many are aware of the diverse cuisine of Nepal. Thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you.

i have been living in nepal for life and tasted most the dishes seen in youtube ..but the young restaurant owner in the end got such a unique way of introducing different cuisine from diff region of nepal. now i would like to visit his restaurant to taste them\..
the guide is spot on. The yomari is made with tichung beaten rice. thats some deep knowledge. hats off to the team for this video.

Nice. This trip is very unique and you are really enthusiastic and adventurous youtuber.
I am a Shrestha (Newar) in India. My grandfather came from Kathmandu valley around 1910’s.
Sometimes I feel I just cut off from my tradition and culture. I would love to visit Kathmandu once and explore my culture and food.
Lots of love from Guwahati, Assam, India 🇮🇳
Vni rakhnu pardenata bro ka bara ako mo pni yai ko
Shrestha or Shresta came to Nepal from India during Rana rule in Nepal. They settled in Kathmandu valley and mixed with local Newar people.
@@antigravity6 l lol you are just speaking false stuffs. We were already here in Kathmandu valley during Malla kings. There were people who came here and lived with us and learned about our language and call themselves Shrestha and Newars but Shrestha were already there during Malla kings. My own family history dates back to before late king Prithivi Narayan Shah and how things changed for us and other Shrestha and Newars after Prithiv Narayan SHAH captured Kathmandu valley. You guys just speaking nonsense at this point 🤣..
Thank you for making this video..
Looks amazing and delicious
Man this guy is living the life. I wish I had his job. Kudos for a great video.
That burning sensation.....you can feel that Aila going down literally 😋😅

English knowledge of that young restaurant owner is too good

It was an glad meeting you in Patna near Champaran Meat House.
I am abroad and i miss buff momo so much. Most of my friends are newar. And after seeing this video, i now miss my friends and the newari food and the memories.
this host is thousand times better than the previous host he knows about the importance of nepali language so in any condition communicates in english rather than indian and explains every thing very nicely
Zero logic. Your statement is clearly contradictory and not to mention, anti Indian.
your logic makes zero sense
Great video, I went to Newa Lahana a couple of weeks ago when i visited Nepal. I’d never been abroad before out of the UK and I’m 49😮 so I’m glad I did, Patan Durbar square was amazing too.
It’s videos such as yours and Nepali related ones that made me get a passport and see where this amazing food comes from. I loved it in Nepal and to be there exactly where you were makes me feel so happy. The world is a huge place and so different to what I’ve ever known 😀👍🇳🇵🇬🇧
Wow healthy food.. Delicious food and most important... The way they serve the food.. In so natural way... By using leaf plates.. Jinko hum pattal bhi bolte hain.. And the best thing is that food taste increases ten times in these plates.and also they r using mitti and peetal ke bartan... Wow! 🙏
There are several cuisine families in Nepal. But Thakali, Newari and Tharu delicacies stand out ! Because they are so organic and so tied to their culture !
They are the most popular ones. And also the most documented ones. There are several food cultures in Nepal.apart from those 3 that stand out too, stand out either on their ecentricities or taste.
Famous tongba from Limbu community
Well actually there is nothing called thakali food.
Thakali food as known today is not thakali food at all.
And newar food is basically imported from Up Bihar bengal region by high caste newars who fled from there.
