Give some credit to the other actor for staying in character and not cracking up after seeing Falk tumble. Personally, I would have lost it and ruined the brilliance of the scene.
This is golden. I must have replayed this 50 times when I watched the DVD for the first time! 😅😅 Whether or not it was scripted, that's some fantastic acting from both of them to stay in character like that!
Rumor has it that this scene wasn't scripted. Flak actually DID fall, but I'm happy they all stayed in character! Falk even held on to his cigar, a bonus! lol
The GREAT Peter Falk.. LOVE this... but I have to reply to Lafforte: there is no double here... You can clearly see it IS Peter Falk the whole way down and the look on his face clearly shows that he did NOT intend to go flying down... and the fact that he landed so perfectly is because of his small stature....
I have some doubt that wasn’t scripted because of the other actor when he says “I told you it was the quickest way down”...if not scripted, that was a brilliant improvisation hands down
I was doing some video editing and watching this episode and laughed myself silly! I knew someone would surely have put this clip up on YT. Thank you so much!
What we're seeing here is half-accident, half-stunt. The long shot of Columbo coming down the hill (starting 01.06) would have been the first shot to be filmed, as standard procedure, and Falk genuinely looks like he accidently fell. Falk and the director obviously loved it and wanted to keep it in, so the subsequent close-ups (first at the top of the hill 01.02-01.06, and then at the bottom 01.12-01.20) were shot to fit the earlier footage. This was a location shoot and used just 1 camera.
Lafforte, can't you see that is obviously Peter Falk? That is NOT a stunt double, because you see his face from the time he first loses control until he finally hits bottom. Geez louise!
The funniest part is the fact that, all said and done, Columbo never drops his cigar! That is "worth the price of admission alone," as the saying goes. Bob Dishy is so cute, too.
For some reason, the bit that really cracks me up isn't that he held onto the cigar, but how he scoots round and past the side of Wilson on the way down! That one second always leaves rolling in laughter on the floor.
It's sad that near the end of his life Peter Falk had succumbed the Alzheimer's and dementia, to the point he could no longer recognise his most iconic role.
Nobody could tank it down a hill like that deliberately. But the scene is so perfectly set for it to happen, and then it continues as though scripted. I can only guess that a genuine fall occurred, then they decided to use it and edit around it to incorporate it into the script. It's bit of puzzle as to what actually happened. If he did do it as an intentional stunt, WOW!
When I watch it here it looks hilarious, but when I watch it on netflix that was definately not on purpose. His face says it all when he is stubling down the hill on a clear 72'' screen. Just want to say, I believe the show "Monk" was created as a spin off of Columbo.
@Lafforte No it's Pater falk doing that stunt (if it was a stunt). Have a look at it again and you'll see his face pretty much all the way down....R.I.P.....

I would of ruined the take from laughing. He stays in character always, even saying, " your right, it was the quickest way down."
Was it an accident??
I would have !!!
He kept hold of his cigar - kudos!
Funniest Columbo moment ever! I hadn't seen it again for about 20 years.

I loved this man! This scene sums up pure Columbo for me. He's always on my wish list of people you'd invite to dinner, alive or no longer with us.
Frank Sinatra did!

That was hilarious when columbo started to run faster down the hill and then fell i couldn't stop laughing.

I love how he maintains his dignity after the fall.
The GREAT Peter Falk.. LOVE this...

remember too he has a glass eye, so his depth of field is really not great. a great show and an even greater actor.

J aime tellement, cette scène je suis plié de rire à chaque fois 🤣🤣🤣
OMG he'll be missed. I'm so sad, but i just want to say thank you, Peter Falk!! You are great.
I remember watching this with my mother when it originally aired, and she laughed so hard!
The best part about this whole thing is the fact that he was able to keep the cigar in his hand the whole time rofl
Funniest scene in the entire Columbo series - I am totally convinced this wasn't scripted.
My favorite Columbo scene ever - cracks me up every time!

If this had happened during the last season of Columbo it would have sent his ass into early retirement!
