  • John Buchanan, Chief Information Officer at Mizuho Americas, sat down with Professor Stephen Kotkin, Kleinheinz Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, for a Q&A on the Geopolitical Landscape with a focus on China and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. China’s Communist party is a political monopoly that will stay its Leninist course while there’s no end in sight for the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Professor Kotkin told forum attendees.
Mizuho is sensitive to the events in the Middle East that occurred during the second week of October and the global repercussions. This discussion about the conflict between Ukraine and Russia and relations with China is still reflective of the situation in those regions but should be noted that it was recorded on September 14, 2023 as part of the Mizuho Finance Leaders Forum.

Taiwan doesn’t need to declare or constitute independence. Its sovereignty ROC is independent, all along.

Exactly, Taiwan is a real separate country that we all recognise in real terms. China invades at its peril., it wouldn't last 6 months of a naval blockade than even the UK could just about enforce by itself. With the US helping...lol. Game over.

It is hard to understand why Putin would trade Russia's economy, political standing in the world, and 500k in killed in wounded for a smoldering pile of rubble.
That the Russian narrative of greatness is a very expensive dream.

If you take it you have the position, the geographic advantage, you have the option of building something in the future, you have the space to expand and so on. there are many Grand Strategic reasons to control Ukraine and Taiwan and Mr Kotkin knows that better than me.

Dude, neither of these countries needs extra land to build on, etc. If Russia put just half the cost of what it has already paid for its second invasion of Ukraine - not just direct costs but indirect as well - into something creative, productive, etc., instead, it would be a ridiculously richer and more powerful country today.

I take your point. After many years and much investment, Taiwan would be a valuable asset again. The main value, as I see it, are the Taiwanese people. But how vibrant an economy would Taiwan be with Taiwanese working under the CCP’s system? The luster has come off of Hong Kong since the crackdown.
