Want to know how brass instruments can sound even more awesome than they already are? Just use a mute! In this video I show how using mutes (and another special device lol) can transform the sound of my trumpet and trombone to add come extra character to the music I play them in! #brass #music #jazz

Music isn't only fun to listen to, but it's usually incredibly fun to dance to as well! I decided to make a tune that's pretty danceable to. Pushing past the comfort zone
Переглядів 877 місяців тому
Getting better at things isn't easy. In fact it's almost guaranteed not to be. And that feeling is often uncomfortable and not very anticipated. In this video, I force myself to compose a song that takes me out of my comfort zones to create something unique. I learned some great lessons along the way too! #musician #musicchallenge #musiccomposer

was surprised to see this channel only has 351 subs at this time, hope u blow up soon
Thank you🥹
This seems like a video you’d find with like 30k likes and triple the amount in views, but I’m massively surprised what I’m seeing. You deserve a sub.
Many thanks! 🙏 We're gonna get to those numbers! Look out 2025!
underrated channel wth
Thank you for teaching me something new!
@@maryjanetheresa604 You're very welcome!
Came for the plunger, stayed for the beats ‼️‼️🔥
Your video are interesting👍👍👍
I love that maybe add some woodwinds in next time ❤❤❤❤
dude your videos are awesome! I didn't expect such an insanely high quality video from a small creator, and i'm impressed! I'm definitely gonna keep watching!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate the support! I got some cool plans for 2025 and can't wait to show them!
Love your vid wait you only have 300 subscribers ❤❤
nice lick at the end
Absolutely unlawful that you don't have atleast 100k, subbed
We're getting there one day! Thanks so much for the support in these begining stages though🙏
Where's the melody?????
I guess didn't compose too much of a melody in the examples lol. It was mostly to show what the mutes sounded like with my instruments.
@@_israelferraro honestly, I never write any music because I can make a pretty chord progression with fancy music theory, but the melody slips through my fingers when I try to write it. All the theory courses and fancy tutorials in the world couldn't fix a bad melody.
I can definitely resonate with that. Some compositions I make end up being more melody driven and others more harmonically driven even if that wasn't the intention at first haha! But that's totally okay!
Here's a couple techniques that help me when I'm going for more melody than harmony: 1. Write the melody first regardless of what harmony you have in mind at first. Then compose a chord progression around that. You may end up with a slightly different progression than you had in mind, but as long as you trusted your ear, you'll definitely have a progression that supports your melody. Sometimes discovering the harmony along the way is the fun part! 2. Have chord changes less frequently in your composition. Without the harmony changing as much or as often, you create more wiggle room to construct a melody that doesn't clash with your more forgiving harmony.
@_israelferraro I'll definitely try this!
Loved the little feature of the instruments with their mutes at the end! Wonderful work and I can't wait to see where you go next!
wait but what about for bass trombone? its just a bigger mute right?
Good question. As far as I know, there's pretty standard sizes for trombone mutes. It would just sit a little further inside the bell than it would for a standard tenor trombone.
@@_israelferraro thank youuuu!
You're welcome! However, I will say if you're looking into getting a bucket mute (which I didn't have in the video) I do believe you'd have to look for a slightly larger size for a bass trombone as those mutes clip into the outside of the bell.
@@_israelferraro perfect. i just switched to bass and im trying to experiment with different styles of music, if you know what i mean.
you need more views my friend
I'm a drummer and percussionist, but lately i've been really interested in brass, especially trombone. So eventually, when I'm able to afford it, I'll try to get my hands onto some of those instruments, and this is pretty inspiring to do so. I'm not a big fan of the trumpet-harmon mute combo, like the Miles Davis sound (I'm more of a Chet Baker trumpet or Clark Terry flügelhorn type), but I have the idea that a cup mute on trumpet and a harmon mute on trombone would be a fire combo.
Nice! Great to hear you're interested in brass! And yeah not everyone is a fan of harmon mutes. I've even done some recordings where I thought it would sound good, but ended up liking the raw trumpet sound better haha!
can we get this on spotify ??
I'm definitely considering it! These shorter tunes I'm doing are kinda just to get my musical ideas out there, but I think some of them are gonna stick and I'll turn them into extended pieces to put up for streaming. I appreciate the feedback on which ones people are really liking!
oml the bass adds so much. this is awesome.
😊
Niiiiiiiice👍🏽👍🏽.
0:56 yo that trumpet sounds like some old swing music
Yeah definitely! Mutes were a common thing used for brass instruments in that era of music!
i your setup allows it id image youd be able to use your lav mic during your demonstrations that way theres no noise from boosting the gain on your voice
@@djt6701 Yeah, that's definitely an idea! I am planning on upgrading my lav mics soon too, so I'll keep that in mind! Thanks for the tip!
👍
nice concise video bro. you also keep it very entertaining. keep it up man 🔥
Thank you! I'm very glad to hear you're enjoying the content!
you have a big future ahead of you, even to people who dont really indulge in jazz, you'll definitely get people to love it
Thank you! I really appreciate that! I definitely enjoyed composing and playing a variety of music styles, but jazz has always been at the core of my inspiration. There's nothing quite like it!
fire video keep pushing I am sure you will make it
Very cool! Thats actually a sink plunger. Im curious if a real toilet plunger would sound any different
It actually is a real plunger! There's just no stick on it is all.
@@_israelferraro this is a sink plunger! Google sink plunger vs toilet plunger. Toilet plungers have a different shape that might give you a different sound
@@mariotheguy123 oh I see now. Yeah, it just might give me a different sound. Considering the difference in size and shape
the algorithm has blessed me today
That's just the brass version of a waa waa pedal.
Yeah I guess that is pretty much what it is! Never thought if that way before haha
How'd you learn to play drums man??
For drums, I'm mostly self taught. In late high school, I messed around on the school's kit before jazz rehearsal one day, realized I actually kinda had some coordination/rhythm and the rest is history lol
@@_israelferraro cool stuff and nice vid! I just got a trombone last week and am learning the ins and outs (no pun intended) of the instrument. It’s fun!
@@amj.composer oh cool! Yeah the trombone is pretty fun! Not having valves or keys really creates for a unique kind of playing experience!
Nice vid. The algorithm will push you to the front soon enough. Keep up the quality
this is a fire ass video where is everyone bro

Awesome camera angles.
Thank you! As much as I can I like to show all the components of the song in an interesting way!
how cool! I never knew “thin & raspy” was a roast- that particular sound reminds me of the Swing era, thank you for the knowledge!!
Yeah a lot of muted brass instruments were used in swing era music! You're absolutely right! And as for the "roast" (which may have been a slight exaggeration lol) a sound similar to brass instruments using mutes often gets created when you're not quite letting enough air through the mouthpiece when you buzz into it to produce a tone. Typical for beginners which is totally okay!
This is amazing!! You are super talented
Thank you so much!!
Sick solos, keep up the good work man!
Thanks man! Improvisation is definitely one of my favorite aspects of music!
Ai yi yi!!! Tito Puente vibes hijo! Que bueno 🪇!!! Mucho mas por favor!!!
Too chill, it's snowing outside now wtf bro???!?
A banger 🔥
Once again, underrated channel
You're too kind🥹
This is awesome! 😎
That's a great sound. Catchy and chill at the same time.
😊
Nice!
It's impressive that the maker made it sound like a frog 😂 in a way that makes it a multitonal percussion instrument too. Pretty cool!
Right!? I figure I could use the instrument not only to incorporate the sound into some music, but also if I was looking for a frog sound specifically for a "sound effect" purpose.
Just WOW!!! Who knew? Such a neat instrument. Though I'm not generally a frog fan, this one is a keeper! Excellent incorporation of this instrument into your compositions. Does this instrument have it's own name or is it considered a "Guiro"? 🐸🐸
I believe it's still considered a guiro
Gotta respect the woodcarving skills of whomever made that frog! I know a local wood carver (and musician) who would probably get a kick out of making his own.
I agree! It really does take some skill to carve something like this instrument! Especially trying to keep in mind the sound they're aiming to have it make!
I lost 😞 the tune is too groovy 💃
Haha that's totally fine! Probably just means you have a great sense of rhythm!
Great groove! Try adding some reverb to the keys to push them back in the mix. Your levels were good, but a little bit of width (panning) and depth (reverb) will really help open things up without getting all nerdy with EQ. 🙂
Thanks for the feedback! I'll try some of those techniques for sure!
Someone is having a good time 🎉🎉.Makes me wanna merengue or cha-cha. Lots of fun. Great tune! If nothing else, I can speed clean a room to this song too.
