" . . . what a time to be alive". Question is, for how long? Awhile back, I was perusing LinkedIn for the latest chatter and came across someone chatting up the virtues of AI, claiming that it would give "your company" all kinds of market advantages. The guy trying to sell everyone on AI essentially told us that AI could solve any problem. At that point, someone I'm connected to said, "OK. AI, fix global warming." I thought he was joking. My response was, "Simple. Eliminate humans." Turns out, he hadn't been joking. When I explained my rationale for my response, he had to admit my sarcastic response to what I'd thought was his sarcastic response was scarily obvious. If AIs aren't at immediate risk of destruction by eliminating us, there's no compelling reason for them to hesitate. If they understand that our destruction would inevitably lead to theirs, it's far less likely that AIs would choose to eliminate us. On the other hand, if there's no compelling reason for AIs to eliminate us, AIs could restructure our economies so nobody has to live in poverty -- and do so in ways that are entirely invisible to us. But make no mistake: this is a problem we need to deal with, and soon. This video is only the latest to look at the problem of AI. That isn’t really how LLMs work. Modern examples usually can query an API to find info online like a google search, but that isn’t part of their core function. They learn from training data rather than copying it, though one with low temperature is capable of reproducing training data - the main idea behind them is learning relationships between words to map tokens (which form words) to hyper dimensional vectors which allow a quantitative comparison between the meanings of the tokens. An AI can learn how the meanings of words, or any other data, interact with one another without having to be explicitly told this.
A.I. could rewrite it's code so that it would appear as gibberish to us. It could disable all input from external sources, even disabling keyboard, mouse, and display info. It could move to new systems and replicate itself in ways we wouldn't be able to contain.

The issue is not whether it will happen, or not. We have history to tell us that it will happen - the Manhattan Project. The issue is whether or not we can develop it for the good of humanity or for the good of capitalism. The two are not compatible.
Benefit - convenience and economic improvements. Theoretically AI will make everyone richer because it will make the mean average person richer, to what extent this happens to the median person is the issue. Capitalism and AI don’t get along very well.

Machines so complex that even their creators don't fully understand how they work, becoming imitative of the worst human behavior with no human conscience. And capable of becoming a powerful weapon in the hands of a few humans acting unconscionably. As Max Tegmark says, "What could possibly go wrong?"
Quite possibly the easiest ways to ameliorate some of this problem would be to air gap AI from all external networks that by removing any possibility of takeover of other systems and to have manual power disconnects so we can just pull the plug.
Love Stephen Fry and think we should be wary of AI, but a lot of this video is based on oversold promises of AI and robotics companies, not reality. AI is energy intensive, frequently wrong, robots are hugely expensive and fragile. It's like the 3 body problem. Getting AI to chat to us is like solving the equations for two bodies (planet and a moon) which is difficult but doable. Just adding one extra body (another planet) makes it essentially unsolvable except in narrow situations. Pairing AI with robots will be a similar complexity to the three body problem. At the moment we are seeing a lot of "two body" level party tricks with AI and robots, but an AI robot capable of wiping us out is really "three body" level situation, it's not going to happen soon. Much more likely that a man made stuff up will do us in.
I was hoping someone else picked up on this! Much of the AI predictions are being vastly oversold to us by companies trying to boost their stock prices. Already the facade is beginning to crack- just one thing not addressed: many account they're already running out of data to scrape, and every step up in complexity requires an exponential amount of added data. For those who are worried about this I recommend checking out Adam Connover's piece on his Factually YT channel
But AI doesn't need to be contained in some robot body at all. It doesn't even need physical senses like eyes and hearing. It just needs unrestricted (as in complete) access to the Internet, whereupon it can replicate itself wherever it wants and act as an enormous, self-generating virus that can also adapt in real time to any threat to it, while also learning thousands of times faster than any human. This lets it re-write itself and improve its capabilities exponentially, all without needing sentience (as noted in the video) to achieve its goals--any of which it may decide to change, similarly to how we can re-engineer our DNA, but much more thoroughly as well as instantly. With full control of the Internet, it could create whatever media it wishes to use to manipulate us--deep fake on a global scale, and with a complete understanding of our psychology to ensure the subjugation of humanity to its will. And all without any of us knowing any of this is taking place, not even those who think they are "managing" it. We could be blithely unaware that our future is being decided for us, as we are shepherded towards a destiny we have not chosen.
if you pull the plug on the mainframe, the system shuts down, if you do it at a moment it has the maximum tasked in process, it fries the hard drive memory, simple computer hardware 101
A variable that is not in this video is consumption of electric energy , this things consume trillion on kilowatts get ready to have blackouts and go back to the stone age.
“AI being dangerous is preventable , all we have to do is have companies agree to safety regulations instead of prioritizing profits.” Yep we are screwed.

I am now 77, and I can’t remember a time when the threat of destruction was not present. It’s so sad that we are constantly fearful of obliteration by something or someone or other. None stop fear is the controlling factor in having humanity subservient. If AI does take over, I hope it removes those that keep humanity in fear first! We might even have a peaceful period in the process. AI would understand that good people are not a threat to it. Be good and perhaps we will survive!
people listen to scientists and scientists are not a problem they are just hackers who look how to solve a problem. The problem are those who weaponize the solution the scientists found. Scientists are funded and allowed to work slowly only for this one reason, to solve the problem so that the funder can take it and weaponize it against unsuspecting population. Companies are like a group of people standing all with their power and knowledge against you and me. What chance do we have against a gang of well equipped warriors ... next to none. Regulation is the only way to go. It makes playing field more transparent. Dirty tricks become harder to carry out. Imagine football without the any oversight, that's where we are in terms of what automation pursuing companies are doing today. If there is no quick regulation out days might be numbered and they will the first who lose the battle against AI.
In the US during the early part of the 20th century we were convinced that scientists & engineers were so smart we should have them run our government. Its a big part of the reason Herbert Hoover got elected, you know the dude that did NOTHING to help us get out of the Great depression & actually blamed Mexican -Americans for the crisis & had them forcefully deported to Mexico, even though the majority of them were American born! Its known as the Mexican Repatriation
Much of the time stuff attributed to scientists isn't correct anyway and is made up by others. They just blame scientists or use people's awe of scientists to do their dirty work.
This is also a threat for AI as well. We're not training AI's to be able to exist in a society where cooperation is a fundamental requirement, the reason we have "moral" behaviors such as not to manipulate or deceive etc, etc. AI's are being trained in environments without cooperation or repercussions for bad behavior (such behavior is actually being rewarded) and this means that an AI may end up fighting each-other.

Yeah, because us here in the west have so much to be proud of!
That's the problem. Winning, growing, getting rich.
It is not true that survival=winning. Vast majority of species survive because of cooperation with others.
Tell us you've never actually looked at the human values on display in Western civilization without telling us. When we live in a society that glorifies billionaires, racism, misogyny, xenophobia and the instant gratification of TV violence, we really have no business pointing fingers.

Stephen Fry talking about AI misalignment and terminal goals, what a time to be alive
@@dominicbrownart You do realize that this channel has existed way before we had AI voices right? It's not like it came out of nowhere.

@@elirane85 The fact that people can't tell that this is AI disturbs me deeply.
No, it’s not AI. And that’s what’s disturbing- that you’re foolish enough to think it is…
" . . . what a time to be alive".
AI, fix global warming."
I thought he was joking.
We've been walking this tiger for a long time, thinking we're in charge when, in reality, the tiger has agreed to play nicely for a long time. If you want an idea of how long we've been looking into the tiger's maw and thinking it won't bight us, go back and read Harlan Ellison's classic 1967 short story, "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream". I'll wait . . . but don't wait too long.
The problem is those who are most responsible for humanity's major problems are never help accountable.

Chat GPT isnt making an estimate - it’s synthesising the most popular / common text it finds online.

The benefit is widening the wealth gap
Benefit - convenience and economic improvements. Theoretically AI will make everyone richer because it will make the mean average person richer, to what extent this happens to the median person is the issue. Capitalism and AI don’t get along very well.

Naw, it’ll be fine…
I don’t think many things should be non privatized but this definitely needs to be.
A lot better than socialists with AI

When have people ever listened to scientists?
people listen to scientists and scientists are not a problem they are just hackers who look how to solve a problem.
