My favorite Welsh name is Rhiannon! Rhiannon is a Welsh goddess, and she is a horse goddess, and she is in fact a white witch (good witch) and healer!
Those are the best. The god/myth related names.
when i was young I thought that my name was ugly and its nice to know that people like my name
Hannah Rozenberg Awesome
Rhiannon X same here :)
Hello to all the other Rhiannon's here! I love our name!
The Welsh name Maelgwn was the real name of St Patrick. Maelgwn Succat. He was kidnapped by Irish pirates and taken as a slave to Ireland from the settlement called Banavem Taburnaie or Banwen to give its Welsh name which is located in South West Wales.
could you add Cerys please (Kerr/is) the C is pronounced the same as Carys - no S sound at the beginning x
cerys baker preach
my ex is named cerys and my name is eleri so we both had welsh names (yes we are both bi)
A well researched and nicely presented video. A "very well done" from here in the UK.
s ewind Thank you so much! I really appreciate it :)
My favorite welsh names are Ianto, Rhys, Daffyd and Owen and Carys, Mica, and Arwyn
Wuggie ofthehood Dafydd
My name is Cerys!
MilesMaddock yeah Daffyd is not a name its Dafydd
Rhys Carter cool, my name pronounced the same way, my name is Reece
Daffyd is a name from the comedy series Little Britain and is incorrectly pronounced. The name is Dafydd (f is pronounced as a v in Welsh and the dd as the th in the) and itt is tthe Welsh name for David
The '...wen' names are said 'wEn' not 'wIn'
My daughter will be named Carys. My two older children actually chose it for a middle name and I was going to name her Claire but fell in love with Carys.
+Nava Mori I love both Claire and Carys, but Carys definitely has my heart! Beautiful choice
I love the meaning of Carys as well.
Nava Mori
me too!
My middle names Angharad (Ang-Haar-ad) which means “Much loved”
To be fair the way we pronounce Dylan and Rhys in South Wales is more similar to how you would pronounce it! North Welsh vowels tend to be be more staccato which I guess is the kind of pronunciation you’ve found in your research. Some lovely selections here, diolch yn fawr 😊
A friend of mine just had a baby and named her Rhoswen (rose-win) it means white rose in welsh...so gorgeous!
beautiful! I love Welsh names!!
Malia Noelle
In welsh that would sound more like RrOss - When.
It means 'White Rose' :)
Thanks for the amazing video! It’s so cool that you’re educating people on different names. I subscribed!
Alsoooo I’ve heard many different pronunciations of Eleri - my name’s pronounced el-lair-ree, so I guess it sometime keeps the E sound. I just thought I’d put that out there for anyone to see!
gorgeous name!
Oh thank you!!
Names ending in -wyn are really fascinating to me. I'm in Canada, and my husband went to high school with an Anwyn, and that was the first I heard of such a name. I have since come across a couple of Bronwyns too.
Remember to pronounce the H when saying RHiannon. I just put the capital H to empathise the letter.
Well done from a Welsh person for all that you’ve done here.
I love Aelwen. It sounds like it could have been used for an Elf in Lord Of The Rings.
Gweneth Cole Aelwen is gorgeous and definitely has a lotr feel!
My sister is Carys one of my daughters is Eleri...my granddaughter is Esyllt..your pronunciation was very good da iawn ti! 🏴
My family is half Welsh half English and I am the only one without a Welsh first name! :( (but I do have a Welsh middle name).
Names are Steffan, Elen and Carys.
It's refreshing to see someone interested in Welsh culture. I'm not too bothered by the pronunciation; if you haven't been exposed to the sound values it's hard to get them totally correct. I irritates me more when my local Welsh commercial radio station adverts mispronounce Welsh placenames!!
My name is Brynne which is a variant for Bryn or Brynn (all are welsh)
Top names in England and Wales is misleading as there are 50Million more people living in England than in Wales and also the English population spreads to Wales too, so even looking at the top baby names of Wales itself is also misleading because most speak English, now if you asked what the most popular welsh names for Welsh speakers are, you would get a totally different result.. remember that the media here is totally bias towards the royal family and tv shows hardly include Welsh people and names and this is a deliberate attempt of stamping out the Celtic languages to which they have tried to do for a very long time, It surprises me that America has a fond connection to Welsh names, it's refreshing and makes England seem much more dark and neglectful and i'm glad that Americans are so obsessed with Mythologies, dragons and castles, all of which exists in Wales :)
I like: Tanwen
Ffion means foxglove and I'm quarter welsh
My favorite Welsh girls name is Myfanwy pronounced MUH-VAHN-WEE! and for a boy Rhodri pronounced ROD-REE
That’s not how rodri is pronounced. you roll your tongue with “rh”
I'm Welsh and the proper way of pronouncing the name Dylan is to say Dulan
thanks
My bothers names are
Owain rhys glyndwr
Llewellyn
Ieuan Meredith
Rhys elvin Lewis
My name is rhianydd sian
The correct welsh way to spell your brother’s name is Llewelyn not Llewellyn. But still good that all the names are so Welsh
Owain is also the name of a welsh king Owain Glyndwr
Thanks for sharing! Such a great, historic name!
Don't you mean prince if Wales.
@@michaelschudlak513 Nope....Prince of Wales comes from Rex Britonorum (King of Britons). The fact it was changed goes along way as to confusing people, where they think Wales was never a Kingdom. It was, unified in 1057.
My oldest daughter's first name is Rhiannon (her two middle names are traditionally Irish), and my younger daughter's first middle name is Gwyneira (her first name and second middle name is Irish).
+Niamh-Learns wow lovely names!
Can you confirm Blaidd is only used for males? I love the name, but wasn’t sure if it could be used for a female dog.
Even if it is mainly a boys name you can still use it for a female. I love boy names for girls. I’m naming my daughter Robbie lol
The presenter is very charming and pronounces the Welsh names correctly
wow thank you!
... you love my name :D My names Carys (im welsh!!) I pronounce it Ka-ris though.. (idk how other people pronounce it)
Team MewMers :] my name is Carys too!
Team MewMers I'm Carys too!
My name is Carys too, but it’s spelled Charys
Team MewMers my name is that too, I spell it Keris and I pronounce it how her neighbor does. Ke-ris. My nickname is just Kez and I’m from Scotland. Not wales but I’ve visited before.
So is mine! I pronounce it the same! :)
My father's first language was Welsh and I have his name as my middle name. You can add it to your list (at No.1!) - Teifion. Pronounced Tay-vee-on in the North or Tie-vee-on in the South. Btw, There's also Eifion (Ay-vee-on). Pob Hwyl a diolch am y fidoe.
My two year old sons name is Maxen Scott (Macsen). I adore it. Couldn't get hubby to agree to the traditional spelling, but hey, I'll take what I can get ;) we are constantly complimented on it. Pregnant with #4 and looking for names that go well with it for a boy and girl, if you have any suggestions!
Such a great name!! Congrats on baby #4 If you like the M theme I like Milo or Mara. Other names I like with Maxen are Finn, Declan, Griffin, Nora, Calla and Brynn. Congrats!
I love old Welsh names especially for girls. There's this magic quality about them.I picture elves and Arthurian knights.
haha yes, so magical and whimsical! Welsh names are some of my favorites1
King Arthur and merlyn are welsh and one of Tolkien's favorite languages is welsh 😁
Raelen: said Rael-en; not Rayleen or Raylyn. Always heard growing up was a Welsh girl's name --true?
Eleri isn't pronounced like Ellery but E-lair-rie, short and sharp rather than prolonged. Dylan in Dull-an, an not on. Rhys is Reese as in Witherspoon with a bit more emphasis on the H. For someone born and raised in Wales I've not heard of most of the boys names LOL
My name is Seren and surprisingly it’s a very popular welsh name. It means star
Love Aelwen! Gonna name my Pembroke welsh corgi puppy that :) great video thank you!
Awe I love Corgi's!
My daughter is named Aelwyn! We pronounce it with a long A though (ayl-win). I believe in Wales it would be more of a long I sound (I'll-win). Any way it's pronounced, it's my favorite. 😊
I love arianwen!, my nieces are ffion mair and nerys :), other welsh favourites of mine are osian oh-an and gethin for a boy and cellan and gwenllian for a girl x
sorry it typed wrong osian - osh- an
wow, wonderful names!!
I’ve heard Rhys pronounced like rice and Reece, but I’ve never heard it the way she says it
In the US we'd say it reese for sure

It's pronounced Sharn and is supposed to have a ^ on top of the a
thanks for sharing!
Sian Greenwood You don't pronounce the "r", though. So it would be pronounced "Shaan", kind of like "Saab", the car name.

Sian Greenwood Which country are you in, I'm in Wales?
