I did the same thing but I used water based acrylic, burnt umber and added a bit of black. Watered it down with windshield washer fluid. Just black doesnt quite look as good. The brown tint looks better with the orange, more natural. Let it dry and it wipes off easy with soapy water and a paper towel.
Wow, looks so much better. I've been sitting on mine out of the box and as great as the sculpt is, it lacks those details in the paint. Definitely going to do this to mine.
I’m also interested to know if you did a video covering your other Thing customisation, because as amazing as this one looks that other version looks sick!!!👏🏼👍🏼
I love working with acrylics because there's always a way back, if you don't like how it ended up looking you can dunk it in simple green and remove the paint.
Thank you for doing the video I was one of them who asked you to make it. I’m actually going to do this now I’ve watched this video but I might try adding shoe polish to make it darker on some spots (back lower legs feet )
Heh just did this to my Thing figure last week the Nuln oil is a god send . It works very well for stuff like this. I also used it on my custom green goblin head(was not a fan of the anime eyes) but I used the oil to add shading around the eyes which made him look more evil. But yeah for Thing it works awesome. I'm doing this also for my buddies thing . After he seen mine and both came out very different so I guess each figure won't look the same . .
Man, just did this to mine a day after this came out. Came out about the same except I used a brown wash. Looks good. Would love to see more customization on the channel.
This is absolutely awesome Greg, I’ve watched a fair few of your videos and they’re all so interesting, really enjoy seeing what you do to upscale some of your figures. This particular video actually convinced me to go buy this figure instead of the more expensive and harder to come by Wallgreens version. Hopefully I can make just as good a job of it and get the same outcome you have.👏🏼👍🏼
Good video . I would like to see more customizing videos from you . Maybe do something with the marvel legends Firestarter figure like put her Ina flight pose and have fire coming off the back. Or make a custome bone braker figure. Like the one the fwoosh is working on but make yours different . Keep up the good work.
I've been on the fence about doing this. This definitely has me in the yard. I'm already swapping out Sues head, so why not bring out that amazing sculpt work. Thanks for making this Greg!
I have been using the Testors Acrylic Wash, it has been working out pretty good, thin just like the Citadel. They also offer it in different colors which makes a big difference in layering on colors. I get mine at Micheals. A good paint wash and some dry brushing after to bring out the detail makes a world of difference. Starting doing this to most of my Black series to some extent.
Thanks greg for this helpful tutorials! Im currently waitin' this Thing Retro style, i feel more Confident to try this out, altho ill try to aim for a 'Heavier' wash, like what you did with ur Thing (Super Skrull Baf) it Looks waay more Menacing c:
Hi Greg. I really like that customized Thing. I think it is the best of the three you have. It really looks like it jumped off the pages of the comic book. Nice job!
Easy and simple and came out great I would personally add more coats to give it more definitive look cuz of my eye sight can't see well at all lol but dope customization method definitely trying to get one now
Congrats. You have discovered the biggest cheat in miniature painting. Just paint base colors then apply Nuln Oil to shade. Done. By the by, also did this with the Spider-Man Far from Home New Suit Spidey Marvel Legend. Made a huge difference to the uncolored webs.
Fantastic customisation!👏🏼 I just wanted to ask what kind of paint you used for the more severely weathered figure???🤔 Great job though, it looks amazing!!👍🏼👋🏼
Man, I just got introduced to your channel yesterday with your Star Wars haul unboxing and was really enthused by your energy and passion for the collecting. My second video was this one. I really appreciate you letting me into your thought process and I love the paint application. I've never been motivated to try this, but after your video I'm looking forward to trying it myself. Thanks. Definitely am subscribing to your channel after these two videos. Good job, brother! I appreciate the content and looking forward to more in the future
I’m a kid collector and I have problems with my figures if they are unpainted or have no details because I do not have thing tools to fix them or the mind
Well, I'm confused ... since what you're saying is not what you're actually showing. The figure that you're holding in your right hand at 1:52 is the Walgreen's Exclusive figure (blue shorts, black belt), the one in your left hand (black-blue shorts, number on belt) is the figure that came with 2 Skrull heads as parts of a build-a-figure. And I think the Walgreens Exclusive one is colour-wise perfect while the other one, the one you "weathered", turned out way too black for my personal taste (it looks even darker in other parts of the video).
I did something similar, but instead of using a black wash, I used a brown call Rock Wash, bleanded better with the orange for a more natural look.
Great 👍 Look 👀 Buddy! Taking Clobbering Time to the next level!!!
This looks so easy. I just ordered this Thing to complete my fantastic four. So I'm definitely gonna do this to make him look so much better.
I filled in all the lines and cracks with a black Gundam panel liner. Worked really well!

Fun video! Thing is one of my favorite Marvel charters. Looks really nice! Thank you for the video!
Best modern day Bob Ross tutorial video I've seen.
Another awesome video. Thank you Greg
He came out great! So much better than how he came

Well done love it
Another great video! Thing looks amazing!
Sweet . Thanks for the vid!
About to weather 2 of these Things. Thinking about brown shoe polish but I do have the Citadel paint. Appreciate the video!
Been using Citadel oils and paints since 90' with most of my Games Workshop armies. Working on a McFarlane Space Marine custom. Looks great Greg 👍
I love working with acrylics because there's always a way back, if you don't like how it ended up looking you can dunk it in simple green and remove the paint.
Just found your channel. Awesome stuff man! Thank you!
Great work Greg! 👍
That looks fantastic! I’m always really tempted to throw a wash on basically every Mcfarlane figure I get. I might try that Citadel stuff you used
Thank you for doing the video I was one of them who asked you to make it. I’m actually going to do this now I’ve watched this video but I might try adding shoe polish to make it darker on some spots (back lower legs feet )

I used the nuln oil when i repainted my justice league flash to darken it down a bit and it came out really well

I just watered-down black paint for mine

Looks great! Thanx for showing us the process. You always have the best videos, I really enjoy them.
I used Vallejo brown wash for my Thing. Came out amazing. Feel like the brown wash made more sense for rocks.

I like the application that's a little heavier than the others. What did you use on that one?
Really love the finished product excellent work

Greg I think I failed arts and crafts, because you are the master of painting figures
Easy and simple and came out great I would personally add more coats to give it more definitive look cuz of my eye sight can't see well at all lol but dope customization method definitely trying to get one now
It looks fantastic! What were the products you used again?
Congrats. You have discovered the biggest cheat in miniature painting. Just paint base colors then apply Nuln Oil to shade. Done.

Thank you so so much
@@GregCookPhotography No, thank you!
Maybe not exciting, but was cool to see. No time lapse was a bonus.
Could you show your White Batcycle that we see on the background of the vidéo?
I remember after getting a few 3 3/4 Gi-Joes I really wished that my Star Wars figures were o-ring style lol
I’m a kid collector and I have problems with my figures if they are unpainted or have no details because I do not have thing tools to fix them or the mind
So new to washes here, myself. With that nuln oil you don't need to wipe it away using alcohol or water? Just a dry paper towel?
Yep just a dry towel
Does the stuff you are using put off an odor?
None at all
