Yayy Katsu vlog! I met you on Thursday night as Karen from Mean Girls 🐭 I completely agree with the frustration over the handling of the badge areas and masking policy. It was so inconsistent and the con gave zero updates. But I'm glad you had fun overall - I did as well!

Sorry, this is a long comment because I also went to Katsu this year and just had to comment on some of the things you mentioned.
This was my 6th Katsucon & I will say regarding the signs around the gazebo are, it was really weird that they were only allowing those with a con badge to go through, especially since other people are in the hotel too. I know afew years ago, they made the con a “closed con” so you could only come into the hotel if you had a con badge, showed you were getting your badge, or had a hotel key card, so that probably had something to do with it but idk. I’d recommend to anyone going (even if your staying in the hotel) always having your badge with you.
Regarding staff I agree that this year's staff had no clue what was going on, but I've had friends who’ve volunteered with Katsu in the past & they’ve told me they didn’t get a lot of instructions. Idk if you were there when the fire alarm went off Sunday, it only went off in one small area of the building, one staff yelled at a few of us saying “don't you guys hear the fire alarm? Move" and just kept walking even though other staff members were standing around us competingly confused. They made the people where I was at leave the building towards where the Live panel rooms were and as soon as we got outside, we were told we could come back in because it was a false alarm.
Weirdly, I thought Katsu 2022 was worse than this year, I personally saw more staff this year telling people to wear masks (even tho there were many still not enforcing it) and they checked my vaccine card (which last year they didn’t for me), but I guess I just had a difference experience. Overall I totally agree it was poorly ran this year.
I love Katuscon but they really need to fix how it is run.
Sidenote: I really enjoy your cosplays & I have started to get back into cosplaying recently because of your videos so hopefully I'll be able to meet you in-person at a con sometime!

I agree it’s dumb they didn’t enforce masks, but so many people ghost Katsu (don’t buy badges, but take advantage of the con and use the space for cosplay photos, etc). They have to block off the gazebo and make it a con space because otherwise a large amount of people would just not bother to support the convention.
If people really wanted to, they can just go to the Gaylord anytime, but they want to take advantage of the convention being there without actually supporting it.
My issue is that there was zero communication about it. The barriers simply popped up with no warning and no explanation. Ghosting the con is definitely a problem, but surprising your paying attendees with sudden changes isn't the way to fix it imo. Not enforcing masks in that space was the cherry on top... it felt so hypocritical.

The lack of masking really baffles me, as MagFest was held one month prior in the same venue and they were able to successfully enforce it.
I feel like as soon as people got in Thursday it was clear staff didn't care, and it spiraled out of control from there. The number of staff who weren't wearing masks was nuts.
I really appreciate you mentioning the mask policy stuff here cause I haven't seen anybody else talk about it at all. I didn't attend Katsu this year due to covid concerns and I never would have guessed based on all the photos/videos/etc i've been seeing that there was an alleged "enforced" mask policy. You're totally right that if they were taking efforts like that to enforce badges in hotel/non-convention spaces then they should have at least taken more efforts to enforce masks in those spaces as well, since if the concern is crowding as a safety issue then lack of masks is a safety issue as well. Hope your con was fun regardless of that though! Everybody's cosplays look great!

I went to my first katsucon and I had a absolutely blast
Katsu was extremely last minute about their decisions. My bf and I had to scramble to get our mask exemptions and even then, we were yelled at in some areas to mask up and other staffers didn’t even ask or care to check our badge that had the sticker. Inconsistency is always irritating to deal with.
