Running The Paris Marathon - This Race Inspired Me!

- Ever wanted to run the Paris Marathon? Let me take you along for the ride! Here's my perspective running one of the world's most iconic races on my birthday. Amusez-vous bien!
This year for my birthday I decided to do something a little different. Rather than spend it chilling in my hometown, in my home country, I spent it running the Paris marathon in France.
Travelling is something I’ve always loved, having already visited places like Prague, Dublin, Berlin, Edinburgh and many more. To combine this love of experiencing new sights with my other passion, running, I figured running 26.2 miles through the French capital would be the perfect way to spend my birthday.
My brother and I got an early morning flight from London to Paris the day before and got ready for the big run. On the day, the weather was beautiful, and I can happily say it was near perfect running conditions. I ran a very comfortable marathon and was able to soak up the Parisian sights en route too.
This was a nice change from the last marathon I did, the Brighton marathon. For the Brighton marathon, the weather was gruelling with the majority of the course being in baking sunlight. To add to this, I (being incredibly intelligent, not) only brought 2 energy gels for the entire marathon. Needless to say it wasn’t a fun experience.
The Paris marathon was luckily much different. The weather was ideal, the course was flat and fun, and I purchased a running belt online to store my energy gels in for easy access during the run. The difference in performance was unbelievable. I ran the Paris marathon an entire 15 minutes quicker than the Brighton marathon. A successful marathon to mark my birthday, happy days.
Massive congratulations to my brother Jack for smashing his personal marathon best by a whopping 20 minutes!
Overall, this was a brilliantly organised marathon that I would highly recommend to fellow runners.
Some top tips learnt from the weekend in Paris and running the marathon:
- Leave yourself more than enough time between attractions. We were very optimistic in our ability to get around the city and this was quite stressful.
- Get to Paris a day or two ahead of the marathon and leave yourself enough time to pick up your race number in the race village.
- Take at least 5 energy gels or something else to keep you going during the marathon. This made a massive difference in my performance, and I shaved 15 minutes off of my personal marathon time.
- If possible, book a room near to the Champs-Élysées. We booked a room on Air B and B literally 3 minutes away on foot from the starting line and this made race day unbelievably simple.
- Have fun and enjoy yourself. This was an incredible weekend and I’m sure I’ll remember it fondly for the rest of my life.

Have you ever ran the Paris Marathon? Let me know how your experience was!
I did it this year, finished in 3:16. I was surprised how many people crossed the road during the run. Weather was perfect, middle 30s km’s where heavy with a lot of climbs. Final 1,5km was perfect, loved the final 100 meters 🤩
Training hard for this year's race 🏃➡️. Was signed up for the 2020 run but missed out because of lock down
Bravo! Good job for your first Paris marathon, especially with a camera at the hand. Hope to see you again (it was my 25th Paris marathon and it is always a great joy)
Thank you! I really loved this marathon, it is indeed a great joy for all involved. I hope to take part again one day in the future!
Congratulations Marathoner!!🎉🫶🏾🏃♂️💨
You looked so comfortable the entire time! Congrats- awesome run and video!
Thanks Korey, glad you enjoyed it!
Hope you enjoyed your birthday!
Amazing content, keep up the good work!
Cheers, it was a great birthday in Paris. Hopefully do it all again soon!
Congratulations! It was awesome to see you run so well. Best of luck for your next one!
Cheers Yves, all the best!
Happy Birthday! 🎉🎂🎈 Your videos are awesome to watch.
Thanks very much!
I signed up for this competition just now. Thanks for your video!
well done and happy birthday !
Thank you!!
Great job mate well done.
Awesome time too, Paris is on my to do list ❤️✌️🏴
Cheers fella, best of luck for when you get round to giving it a go!
Good job my man and a well deserved pb - I followed your Brighton vlog. Congratulations and happy belated birthday. Enjoy the recovery.
Thanks Avinash, much appreciated! All the best mate
Well done Craig!! Paris 2021 was my first ever marathon, and despite being hard work, was a phenomenal experience. Your video brought back a lot of memories (coincidentally it was sort of my birthday as well...51 and a half exactly on the day of the race!)
Thanks Mike and congratulations, what an achievement. It was a top experience, I agree! Happy birthday
WOWWW!!! You did amazingly well, bravo!!! I will do my first ever marathon next Sunday here in Paris and I'll be lucky if I can do it in 5 hours I think. You made me laugh when you described running through the Bois de Boulogne as "nice country roads"!
Thanks very much for watching and for the kind words. Best of luck for your first ever marathon on Sunday, you’ll smash it! Haha, they’re not country roads at all; that’s what happens when an uncultured Englishman comes to Paris! Good luck
what a great run mate. and well done for vlogging it
Cheers fella, great marathon and highly recommended!
Congratulation, great day and great time!
Thanks Jean!
love your idea of trying something new on birthday, making the day special:
Thankyou!
Great video! I was considering the Paris marathon and your video sealed the deal for 2024! Thanks! 😅
Thanks 🙏 If you can, you will love it. One of my favourite races of all time, the atmosphere is incredible!
Great review and good running 👍
Thanks James, nice one!
idk how but you looked so fresh the entire race! I started to run only 3 months ago and I plan to go for the Paris marathon in April next year. Thanks a lot for sharing this moment, I can't wait now!
Thank you! The Paris marathon is a great race, you’ll have lots of fun!
Thanks for the guide!
Happy to help!!
Great video! Great marathon :)
Cheers!
Very impressed with the video. I can't imagine running a marathon, let alone filming the whole thing myself. Nice finish!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it :)
What a great Time ! 💪 almost sub3.
I live in Paris ,i hope you had a good Time this week 🤙
I support you ,good continuation man
I made 4h28 for my first marathon .i will try sub 4h in April 🙏
Thanks so much, it was a great marathon and the conditions were on point! Well done for your first marathon and best of luck for April my friend
Congrats on that awesome finish! surprised to see that there are almost no crowds!
Thanks! There were loads of crowds in some areas but others were a bit quiter, probably due to being more outside of the city. Thanks for the comment!
Great time Craig, I did it too, amazing experience 🇫🇷👌
Thanks fella and congratulations! It was a great race for sure
Looks like a beautiful course! Cheers from Phoenix, Arizona.
Run a Marathon in Paris is such a good experience. I ran the 2017 edition. Nice sunny weather but hot (26 degrees). One of the best moment in my life.
It sure was a beautiful course; highly recommended!
Nice video Craig. Well presented, shot and edited. Without a go pro and if you pushed yourself you would easily go under 3 hours and it’s refreshing that you’re not bothered by that artificial time.
I’m definitely tempted to do the Paris Marathon
Cheers fella. I'm definitely looking to break sub 3 hours very soon and it will probably be during a marathon where I don't have the Go Pro. Still, I'm glad to have captured the experience anyway. Give the Paris marathon a go, you'll enjoy it!
Well done mate! Solid time with a camera, you'll break that sub 3 on the next one.
I also vlogged this marathon, however I didn't take my GoPro on the run as the time was my priority, credit to you. Keep going!
Thanks James! Will definitely be aiming to break sub 3 very soon. Nice job for vlogging the marathon too, hope you enjoyed it!
Great video Craig and well done! I'm off to Paris in April.
Thanks Katie and James, hope you enjoyed the Paris marathon!
@@runningcafe1 unfortunately we didn’t make it out there as James got covid in race week 😭 but 10 of our members did and loved it!
great video, my juices are flowing for sunday ! HOPING TO BREAK 3
You’ve got this mate, it’s an ideal flat course for a sun 3. Go for it!
@@runningcafe1 just to let u know 2:58:24 !!!!!!!!!!
@@simonscotthorne3442 wow, fantastic time! Congratulations to you my friend!!!
bravo best time
Well done Craig! Making it look so easy 🥳🥳
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it :)
@@runningcafe1 my pleasure Craig! Got another race lined up?
@@PoetWithPace Yes, got a few. Have Headcorn half marathon (in Kent) in a couple of weeks, the London Half Marks Half Marathon and I have the Richmond Path 100 Miler booked for early May (that one's going to be mental!). Got an injured ankle at the moment though which is putting a bit of a spanner in the works.
@@runningcafe1 oh wow that’s a LOT. Especially the 100 miler 🙀🙀…. Wishing you a speedy recovery 👍🏼
Hi Craig what a marathon you did really well with your time I did vitalityone for London frist one time 6 24 mins I love to go one day looks good fun
Thanks Lorraine, well done for your marathon! Hopefully you can do Paris one day for sure
Happy birthday for Sunday! Will you be running Brighton again in April?
Thanks Sean! Not sure about April just yet but considering I’ve got my first 100 miler next May it might be great training to do Brighton!
Congrats!! Nice to see your journey!
I'm thinking about 'exploring Paris in a tempo run' next year, I mean do the marathon in Paris :) ! my first was in Wroclaw. I only wonder about the stacions with water? I didn't notice any... Were they there?
Good luck!!
Cheers from Poland,
Joanna
Thanks for the kind words! This marathon was very well equipped with water stations and at least 2 toilet stations on the course. I would highly recommend it!
@@runningcafe1 Thank you! finally I did it on April 2022, medal in my room, amazing experience!
You looked in great nick at the end of that race. You probably could have smashed the 3 hour mark?
I probably could have beaten the 3 hour mark. Made some rookie mistakes like having to go to the toilet in the latter half which easily used like 30-45 seconds. Could have drunk more water/drinks on the way round too.
That’s my new goal a sub 3!
Great video. How did you record yourself? Selfie stick or was someone there to run with you at your pace and record you from time to time?
Cheers Peter. I recorded myself using my Go Pro and a handheld tripod stick for it. Both top tools and well worth the investment!
@@runningcafe1Did you keep it in your running belt when you weren't recording or did you just run with it the whole way in your hand?
Whenever I do a running vid like this I keep the go pro in my hand the whole time. It’s long winded but ideal for when I want to quickly shoot something
