  • A popular hit in the UK in 1931, "Song of happiness" was recorded by both Jack Payne & Jack Hylton, and also by others including this version by The Manhattan Melodymakers, a studio group led by Harry Bidgood. Harry was the musical director at Vocalion, , and was responsible for a majority of dance records that appeared on the Broadcast label. When Vocalion merged with the Crystalate company in 1932 he reinvented himself as Primo Scala, and went on to release a hugely popular series of records as "Primo Scala's Accordeon Band" on the newly introduced Rex label. No accordeons however are audible on this track, a stirring performance that, in my opinion, is one of his very best recordings from his Vocalion days.

Reminds me of Run Rabbit Run a bit during the vocals.
