Good informative video. I have not followed Minis since 2001 ! One more advantage of the scow type hull is that there is less asymmetry in the immersed part of the hull when heeled. I do prefer the pointy hulls, but these scow hulls with foils are just awesome.
Very similar dimensions and mass as my Sonata though my boat doesn't do that speed. Mini Transats are awesome. Stoked that my favourite sailing channel is now sailing my favourite boat.
In my opinion the most important factor, is that in the capsize test, the boat floats differently (bow down/up), allowing for more sail power and canting keel angle, which benefits performance; as you have more power to sail, it compensates for the less efficient shape. Also, the boat tends to sail on the side narrow chains, to use the rest of the body as a lever.
@@TheSailingFrenchman amazing boat . I love it. You will have a lot of fun, but you will need also a lot if awareness to keep the balance and the full potential of this boat. 👍
You didn’t mention the advantage of more internal space for sail storage and better sleeping options. I think that it is awesome. There are a lot of traditional Dutch barge boats with the rounded bow style. And there are other performance advantages when healed to do with the immersed shape of the hull against the wide stern wedge shaped hulls which are slightly pushing their keels sideways through the water.
spoon shape hull work well on small sailing boats: see Yann Quenet's 4 meter long "Baluchon" who take a world tour ...and after some mods is now close to start another world tour!
I’m just starting to look at sailing. It’s unfortunate, for those of us beginners, that your accent in English sounds like (and in closed caption) turns “planing” into “planning.” I think that performance during planing is crucial. It makes sense to me that this hull form is very functional, since performance of the heeling boat hull while planing is very dynamic and stability of this hull during that dynamic situation reduces drag at the bow (where it is not needed).
I really like that little boat. Nice wide beam and the bow lines do not into the interior and it hauls fucking ass man. Thank you for posting the links to the builders and designers.
This comment is very late, so I don't know if it will be seen. But my understanding was that the scow hull form created more form stability, with a lot more buoyancy to leeward compared to a more conventional monohull form, almost like a catamaran. And so more sail carrying power. This was not mentioned in the video. This was certainly the reason the hull form was used on inland lake racing scows in the United States, like the big A scows.

Your boat looks great- good luck sailing it. These boats need less open cockpit and more protection for the crew. When heeled over water comes back along the topside into the cockpit. When planing the bow wave moves aft and dumps water onto the crew. I see this on video- I dont sail!! Very clever design for a boat limited by LOA. Sort of reminds me of the North Sea Ulstein X-bow supply vessels with their "inverted" bows.
Lets be honest (as a french guy). Thank you British sailors for the creation of this amazing mini class.
Old designers trick.... rounded ends (as you heel) extend the water-line, the spoon bow will also plane down-wind preventing the bow from burrying!
