important update on this. - you don't have to record your external gear using Oktatrack's buttons. You ca record external MIDI into Oktatrack (say any midi controller really) if its easier for you. There is a tactile workflow which I personally like, typing MIDI in Oktatrack, but you don't have to do that. It will help you envision music in a different way though. Otatrack is extremely powerful sampler ,but it is also a monster MIDI sequencer. It can do everything you do to your audio, and more - Midi lfo, Arps....what have you.
This is a great comment. I just acquired an Octatrack and prefer to record external midi to the Octatrack, though I am unable to find videos on how to accomplish this setup. Could you explain how I can accomplish this?
Clear and concise video. Thanks a lot. Only problem I have is the sound from the Mother 32 is barely audible even with the gain turned up to the max. Any obvious reason?
No problem! Yeah I would say make sure that volume on the actual Mother-32 is turned up. Mine doesn’t even need to be up past half to be nice and loud and also make sure that when you make a Thru machine that the volume in the SRC section is turned up as well as you can give it a bit of gain in the MIX section as well.
I had a similar issue. One thing I just figured out also is you can go directly out from your synth as well and add fx w pedals and things if you want a clearer sound but still an octatrack sequenced synth. The octa inputs are a lil weak in my experience and easily distorted.
I've had my OT awhile but am so terrible at MIDI. This video was helpful for making me realize any external synth will have a particular channel for MIDI and its not just automatically always channel 1. I'll try to explain a problem though. I am triggering my Vermona drum synth fine now from the trigs when in track mode. But if I switch to chromatic mode nothing happens. Not sure if these things are related, but what's really vexing me although I can manually trig the synth, I can't seem to record these hits to the grid. I've tried live recording as well as placing trigs in the grid while stopped and tweaking every single note 1 value from C -1 to C9... any idea why I can't record anything onto my MIDI track for automatic playback? I'm going MIDI out from the OT to MIDI in on the synth. I may try routing through Ableton using USB now, but was hoping to make this seemingly very basic out-of-the-box connection work. Thanks!
Honestly I’m not familiar with that drum synth but if I had to guess, it might be a problem with the synth itself. The OT is actually fairly simple to set up for use with controlling other equipment so there might be kind of a disconnect between how the synth is set up to receive the MIDI.
@@Ponchy Thanks for the response. I've got it working fine through Ableton now, but not sure if the direct method would magically work if I tried it again now. Maybe I'll give it whirl. Thanks, cheers!
@@qwerwerterytrtyutyuiyuiouiop glad to hear you got it through Ableton! Yeah it's always worth a retry haha. If I come across anything that might help you, I'll certainly let you know. I always like troubleshooting these kinds of things haha.
Quick question! Can I sequence multiple patterns at once using JUST 1 synth? Like recording a melody on midi channel 1 then a harmony on midi channel 2 and have them play at the same time?
It totally depends on your synth. You are definitely limited by what your synth is capable of doing. Basically you just can’t make a monophonic synth play multiple lines because the Octa is just sending midi signals and nothing more.
Hey Ponchy! Thanks for the video. Theoretically, what if you wanted to do this with 8 different external synths, using the 8 midi tracks. Do you have to rely on the midi channel that the synth responds to, in your moods case channel 1, or could you chain them using midi thru cables and assign a midi channel to them? Or use a midi divider? Appreciate it, thanks x
@@Ponchy hey you seem like a knowledgeable guy. Is it possible to record midi "as you go" with the internal chromatic "keyboard"? (something like this ua-cam.com/video/gIeSsgOgAfM/v-deo.html) But when I hit record the chromatic keyboard always turns into trig setup. All I want is to play a tune on a keyboard and record its midi. Do you know how to do this?
@@matejv2840 hey man yes indeed! All you have to do is make sure you are on the chromatic trig layout by pressing FUNC+Up or FUNC+Down and then make sure that when you wanna live record you press rec AND play at the same time and then the record light will be flashing instead of just solid red.
Thank you, very solid and fast way of explaining this without dragging us along for 10/15 minutes!
No prob! Glad I could help

When I press a key it makes a constant note it’s weird like it was on hold what to do?
Hi Mr Ponchy. Have you made a video using the Rytm Mk2 sequencing external gear please?
Is there a way to loop the midi back into the OT to sequence itself?
Does this only work in chromatic mode?
got a question actually. How do you sample back your octatrack sequenced synth back into octatrack? Is it thru the flex machine?
thanks alot, Ponchy. i love short tutorials. this helps.

Excellent...fast and got me up and running in 4 minutes! Thanks Ponchy!

You can’t slide midi trigs unfortunately, no.
