  • Hi Guys.....
    I hope you are all fit and well !!!
    Join me on this adventure where I battle with mother nature on a summit in Glencoe.
    BBC weather and mountain weather forecast predicted 10mph wind and light rain. the reality was very different indeed.
    this was the worst conditions I have ever camped un and the Phoxx II was really pushed to its limits.
    see how the story unfolds.
    Thanks for watching and I look forward to reading your comments as usual

    I used the PHOXX 2 when I did my first wild camp on Pike O Blisco, I too had bad weather, (50mph winds and rain) the tent withstood everything Mother Nature threw at it! It was still standing solid in the morning.

    I wouldn't ever rely on a weather forecast as past experience shows they are often wrong, camping in the open without any wind breaks around is a recipe for disaster unless you have a storm tent, I have a old Vango force 10 which would have been fine in those conditions only problem is it weighs about 13 lbs, Your plan to bale was wise and you were well equipped with gear and knowledge, A pint afterwards job done! Even yesterday the rain was torrential but the 8000 h/h jacket kept me dry, The two lads on the walk without waterproofs I hope you had a nice hot bath when home! Moto is don't rely on forecasts and carry a rain coat! Good video mate! Cheers Mark!

      Thanks for watching Mark much appreciated mate. Agree with everything u said the forecasts are rubbish.... thus one came out of nowhere and knew it was time. Thankfully I know the area and the terrain and my nav is good. Could have been very different for inexperienced campers. Pleased u enjoyed it mate ATB Simon

    The A82 to Glencoe - one of my absolute favourite places on earth! Weather high up can be so different to base ground level. I've had a fun night near there with insane winds, barely slept but my tent held up well. Glad you made it back safely and early enough to book a hotel. Finding your way back in pitch dark and poor conditions can be so much more challenging than you'd imagine.

    You probably would have had to bail regardless, but would it have been better if you pitched the tent pointing in the opposite direction, with the narrow end facing the wind?

    If you can spare a moment - when you say the integrity of the shelter was severely compromised, what specifically was failing? Given the low profile, I'd have expected it to perform quite well - though it would be better if the poles were a heavier gauge...

    • @YONDERMOUNTAINADVENTURES
      @YONDERMOUNTAINADVENTURES  2 місяці тому +2

      The pitch started off great with low end facing the wind but as the night wore on the wind changed direction and the higher pole took a battering. The gusts of wind caused the pole to bend in on the tent. I have used this in strong winds before and was fine so maybe wind direction / gusts made it less capable on this occasion. Thanks for watching ATB Simon

    • @tullochgorum6323
      @tullochgorum6323 2 місяці тому +1

      @@YONDERMOUNTAINADVENTURES This is why I generally prefer trekking pole tents if I'm going lightweight into exposed terrain. Bendy poles can get overwhelmed by wind, especially on the cheaper brands. Trekking poles are very much stronger. As you say, if you're going to take inexpensive gear above the treeline you have to be realistic about its limitations. But with our mountain forecasts being so unreliable, this isn't always realistic...

      @@tullochgorum6323 good point.... iv also been caught out with trekking pole tents too but I think the forecasts are so inaccurate and inevitably can get caught in much worse conditions than expected. Always safety first.... think you're right though..... prefer a trekking pole tent 👍

      @@YONDERMOUNTAINADVENTURES Lightweight tents are always a compromise. But as a last resort we always have the option of dropping the tent around us burrito style - we'll get damp with condensation but we'll survive the night and the shelter will be undamaged. Only had to do this once in 50 years of wild camping but it's a good option to keep in mind.
