Jimmy Carter’s legacy is one of profound transformation, rising above the criticisms and challenges of his presidency to become a symbol of moral leadership and human compassion. As the 39th President of the United States, he faced immense trials-economic crises, the energy shortage, and the Iran hostage standoff-that tested the nation’s patience and his own resilience. While many doubted his effectiveness, Carter’s presidency quietly achieved groundbreaking milestones, such as the Camp David Accords, a historic peace treaty that redefined diplomacy between Israel and Egypt, and the creation of the Department of Energy, which showcased his forward-thinking approach to environmental responsibility. These were not the acts of weakness but the bold, calculated moves of a leader willing to risk popularity for progress. His unwavering commitment to human rights became a global standard, demonstrating that leadership is not about power but about purpose.
Yet, it was Carter’s post-presidency that immortalized him as one of the greatest humanitarians in modern history. Through The Carter Center, he championed global causes, eradicating diseases, fighting poverty, and fostering democracy in regions where hope seemed lost. His life was a testament to the idea that true greatness is not measured by the applause of the present but by the enduring impact on future generations. Carter was a leader who lived by example, showing the world that humility, integrity, and relentless service could outshine political triumphs. His legacy challenges us to look beyond titles and moments of doubt and instead see the towering figure of a man who dedicated every ounce of his being to the betterment of humanity.

When Deng Xiaoping visited the US in 1979, Jimmy Carter arranged a children choir performance for Deng, singing "I love Beijing Tian'anmen", which was hilarious for me as a Chinese. In the same year, the US severed diplomacy with Taiwan's Republic of China regime and switched to the People's Republic of China. 8 years earlier in 1971, the ROC regime from Taiwan was removed from the UN after an all-member-state referendum on "who the true China is" question and the PRC was adopted simultanously to supersede it as the China representative. (The ROC lost the Chinese Civil War in 1949 and fled to Taiwan Island but it continued to represent all of China in the UN from 1949-1971.)

Shakespeare's Hamlet said it best, “He was a man, take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again.” Carter was a progressive and an environmentalist. In 1979, he was the first President to have solar panels installed at the White House. (Reagan tore them down in 1986, they were never re-installed. They were put in a warehouse in Virginia and forgotten.)

Instead of crying, I’m cheering him on and trying to give his soul confidence. He lived to be 100 even after losing his wife. As soon as he turned 100 he could’ve died a week later, but I think he choose to stick around for well over 2 months. I wasn’t born to see him in office and when I found out his policies I can’t say I’m a fan. But even with that, I still thought he had a good heart and was a good human being right up until the end. I appreciate our Allie’s giving their condolences at a time where we need them. RIP Jimmy.
