Thank you for clarifying these terms. I want to pull up my hair and correct people but I have given up long ago now I will just send them to this video.
Regards from Central America. Here's an interesting tip. When we changed from using a ceramic filter to using iodine pills, some of us caught parasites during a Pacific-Atlantic crossing through the Tropical Rainforest. We failed to follow a rule: if you submerge your canteen in a water source, after putting your iodine (or other chemical), wait until it has dissolved or mixed, then put your canteen upside down and loosen the cap so that the treated water flushes the thread in the cap and in the canteen. Otherwise, when you put your lips in your canteen, you can get the parasites anyway. Hope this helps.
Best Corporals Corner mid-week video of the year. This one will be on a memory stick and the cellphones for our young troops to practice over & over until the information is 100% embedded in their grey matter. Basic but critical survival skills, expertly explained.
I love the video Shawn. Brings back memories of when I was a medic in the Army, and having to disinfect our drinking water. I love your mid-week videos just as much as your sunday bushcraft videos. Outstanding AF!!
Thank you Sir! Much as some call a firearm's magazine a "clip", you defined the correct terms and conditions, clearly and accurately. It is so much easier to communicate with others when all the terms are defined. Love this vid!
Great job Corporal ! Glad to see you are still trying to educate us and also use Wednesday afternoons to train us on common subjects. Keep them coming.
This is why I enjoy your content. Not only is it good sense. You probably just saved lives by sharing this. As drastic as some cases would have to be for the overall survival skill. When people are out in the woods hiking and such. You just never know what type of situation you could be faced with where safe water is necessity and not readily available. Thank you. 😎👍
Rolling (or fast churning or highly agitated) boil. Some people think a rolling boil is when the bubbles start to form. Previous videos I have seen the person did not understand what a rolling boil is and I am glad you used the word agitated.
One actually great use of the bleach method is for extended natural disaster situations where you want to conserve fuel. After certain natural disasters, you might be under a boil order AND have lost use of your house's stove, and restoration can sometimes take a week or more. Bleach can get you safe cold water to amend with boiled water to wash up for bathing. It can help extend your fuel stores when you don't know how long the boil order is going to last for things like bathing and dishes.
I have a lifestraw, a sawyer, and a big MSR filter. Their weakness is that they easily stop up. The advantage is that you immediately can drink cold water. I agree boiling is the best method. Another outstanding video! Thank you for your service.
I've tried the old Horace Kephart trick when boiling standing water of tossing some bean-sized chunks of charcoal into the water and boiling them for five minutes. It really does help with the funky taste.
I love this channel. Disinfecting the water will not remove all poisons or chemicals, I recommend filtering the water after you disinfect it. For some water you may want to distill the water also. I remember when they had a problem with certain bodies of water that would catch fire and burn in Ohio.
Miniature clear glass liquor bottles have always worked great for packing a small amount of bleach. A small clean glass *hot sauce bottle should also work well. Whatever you use, test to make sure the bleach doesn't have a chemical reaction with the lid or seal, nor melts them. *Such as the small tobasco bottles in the old MREs.
See! This is why I love these mid-week videos. The idea of covering the mouth of the bottle BEFORE putting it into the stream to filter the water…. SMH! Thanks again for making these.
I really needed this today ! Almost bed ridden with my back . Videos from my favorite UA-camrs (your way at the top of the list ) make this a little more bearable ! Informative and entertaining content , and always " Awesome AF " 👍👍
Thank you for sharing information on altitude and also filtering. Many sources talk about the boiling but not specifics. As always... the knowledge we all need.
Excellent instructional video, Shawn! Water resource is very important, as you mentioned. A human being can maximum lived without water for three days. I really like your midweek videos, that tells everyone how simple it is.

you should make a desalination video for using salt or brackish water .Many cities have brackish rivers and little access to fresh water.
Great point on why filtering before boiling needs to be considered if it’s even needed. 😎🇺🇸
