    You are such a great teacher! Clear, concise and organized. Started looking because I wondered if I wanted to trade up my Imagine. Got caught up because it was such a good review. Between you and a lot of recent practice I am no longer terrified of my serger. I like a lot of the differences between the Ovation and the Imagine. Besides the Coverstitch I was interested in the different speeds would have been much appreciated when I first started serging . I am putting the Ovation on my Christmas list.

      Thank you... and thank you for watching! I did the same thing, the Imagine is an amazing machine... but I wanted the Coverstitches and more space on the right side of the needles. Plus, my favorite thing is that the presser foot lifter is right in front of the Ovation... right where I can see it :)

    I have the Evolve Serger, I was told that the threading is real close to the same settings as you are showing. Is the correct ?
    I have an embroidery question for you also.
    What stabilizer do you use for doing free standing lace?
    On the pillowcase question from before do you trim off any of the fabric before you sew for the last time? 😃 😃 😃 THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP AND I ALWAYS WATCH YOUR VIDEOS, THEY ARE VERY INFORMATIVE TO ME!

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  5 років тому

      Hi Cheryl... Yes, the threading is similar... I use Super Solvy (from Sulky) to do free standing lace (Any heavy duty wash away stabilizer will work... I think Floriani has a good one too) And, I'm not sure about the pillowcase question... can you remind me? Thanks so much for watching... I'm happy to hear you like them!

    Thank you for your WONDERFUL videos. I just bought a Baby Lock Triumph which I think is very similar to the Ovation you are teaching. I've already learned a lot
    just from your videos. I do have a question. I've owned another serger for 30 plus years so this question is for all sergers. Is there a generic seam guide that can be attached to the throat plate to use as a guide to keep the fabric straight while feeding into the needles and blade? Like on a sewing machine - they make magnetic seam guides and acrylic guides and even cardboard guides. I've always thought surely someone has come up with something. I've never even tried to make a homemade guide...but I've never been able to get a perfectly sraight line. Thanks again for the videos. Don't stop!

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  6 років тому +2

      Hi Sandra, Thank you for the kind words. Technically you could do a blind hem along the edge of the flap. Stitches will show along the right side of the fabric. Here's a link to the blind hem foot tutorial. I would probably use a three-thread wide to finish the edge and then turn it under and topstitch it in place. Let me know if this helps and thanks for watching :)

    Thanks for these they are very informative. I have the Evolution and need all the help I can get. My question is I'm sewing a pair if pull on pants in a slightly stretch velvet pile fabric.
    1 what needles should I use, fir thus as normally one would use a gall needle with knitted fabric on a sewing machine.
    2 can i use a three stitch it should it be 4
    3 any other tips you can give me please.

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  2 роки тому

      Thank you! ... I would use size 14 stretch needles + a 4-Thread Stitch + check your differential feed setting to make sure you compensate for the stretch in the velvet. Start with Differential Feed on N... if the seam lays flat, you're good. If it's stretched out, adjust the DF a little high than N and try again... keep making small adjustments until the seam lays flat. Hope that helps!

    how to you adjust to serge a 1/4" seam on a knit, like French Terry?

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  Рік тому

      When I'm sewing knits, I don't cut anything off the edge... just skim along to cut the little pokey threads. The width of the 4-Thread Stitch on the Ovation can be adjusted from 3/8' to 1/4" depending on how close the knife is to the needles.. Set at 7-7.5 you will get a 3/8" wide stitch... if you bring the knife closer, it will reduce the amount of fabric between the needles and the cut edge, making the stitch slightly less wide ...to a 1/4" Hope this helps, thanks for serging along with me

  • @cherylgrider759

  • @cherylgrider759

    For making a french seam on a pillowcase. When you do the body of the pillowcase do you trim the 1/4" seam before you do the second 1/4" seam?

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  2 роки тому

      So sorry I missed your question earlier! If you sew the first seam with a 1/4" wide 4-Thread stitch, there is no need to trim it. Press the fabric to encase the serged seam and stitch the second seam on your sewing machine.

    my problem is making a neck with ribbing. like a neck of a $9 t-shirt.

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  2 роки тому

      I'm so sorry for the delayed response! You can buy rib knit fabric... Cut it into a 2" wide strip that's similar in length to the neckline. Then fold it in half so the raw edges are together and the right side of the rib knit is face out. Stretch the knit strip around the neckline edge aligning the raw edges. As you gently stretch the knit strip, it will become shorter than the neckline. I would try doing this three times to determine how long to cut your ribbing strip. Then sew it into a circle. Match the seam in the rib knit strip with the shoulder seam. Pin the strip around the neckline evenly distributing the ease in the neckline. (It helps to find the quarters of the ribbing and the neckline to distribute the ease evenly.) Then sew the ribbing to the neckline. Gently stretch the rib knit to match the length of the neckline... try not to stretch the neckline. When you're finished sewing, press the rib knit up and topstitch below the seam, through the tee and seam allowances to secure the rib knit up.

    Hi Jen :) Hope all is well. How would I get a 1/4" seam while using a 3 thread narrow if I don't want to trim off any fabric? Making doll clothes with a pattern that calls for 1/4" seams. Thanks 😊

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  2 роки тому

      Hi Dorothy, The 3-Thread Narrow stitch is not 1/4" wide... If you adjust the cutting width so the blade is farther from the needle, it may widen the stitch to a 1/4"... or it may add too much fabric under the looper threads. Is there a reason why you don't want to use the 4-Thread Stitch... I'm also so sorry for the delayed response!

    A pattern I’m working has a 5/8” seam. I have an ovation but kind of a newbie. Can you help me out I am using a 3 thread overlock wide. I have not sewn on the top yet😬 so just doing samples. Is there an easier way like you showed with the 1/4”?

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  Рік тому

      It sounds like you're working on a woven fabric top (most knit tops have a 1/4" seam allowance.)... If it is woven, I would sew the seam on the sewing machine, then clean finish the edges on the serger using a 3-Thread Narrow Stitch. If you want to sew an accurate 5/8" on your serger, there is a sticker with a few little dashes on it stuck to the knife cover (next to the knife)... Align the raw edges of the fabric with the dash that has the L over it... That will give you an accurate 5/8" when you're using the Left Needle (3-Thread Wide). If you're using just the right needle... Align the fabric with the dash that has the R over it. You can adjust the allowance by 1/8" in either direction by going to the next dash. Also, I know that Baby Lock has an excellent seam guide attachment that screws into the table attachment... Worth checking out if you do a lot of seaming that needs to be exact! Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

  • @AnneWickman

    Your tutorial was helpful...I just bought a used Babylock Imagine, my first serger! My question is, how do you sew a 1/2" seam using 4 threads? I am brand new not only to the world of serging, but sewing with knits as well. I want to understand how to line the material up so that I will get an accurate 1/2" seam allowance since the knife will cut material off so that the garment I am making will fit correctly. Am I to line up a measurement with the right needle? the left? Help would be appreciated! TIA

      Sorry I missed your comment... There is a sticker on the knife cover next to the blade that has lines on them If you line up the raw edge of the fabric with the L line it will give you a 5/8" seam allowance when the left needle is in... and the R will give you a 5/8" seam allowance when you are using just the right needle. Thanks for watching!

    I’m a quilter. Is it possible to set the machine for the “scant” ¼” seam we strive for?

      Sorry I didn't see your comment earlier... Set your stitch width to 5.5, this will give you a 1/4".. Try a sample and measure it to see if its on the scant side of things... Thanks for watching

    thank you and I learn something from you. May I ask you a question. Is it better to do this when you sew material together to make a quilt? I am trying to find the right way to do it. I want something to hold it better than straight stitches.

      Hi Trenton, I do know quilters who use the serger to piece their quilts... I think it may hold up better if you are going to repeatedly wash the finished quilt. ...But keep in mind that the serged edge may show through if you're using light colored fabrics.

    Would I use the three thread narrow in needle 2 for quilting? Which way would be best for quilting? Or would the four thread be better? Thank you for your help.

      If I use my serger to construct a quilt, I use the 4-thread stitch

    Hi .I loved your tutorials. I have bought Babylock Evolution a month back and was desparately searching for
    Operation manual video for the same. And I found you with the Ovation serger. I guess the operation and setting up of machine is almost same for both the models. Your video helped me a lot. I have followed your tutorials up to page 19. I have a stupid question here to ask? I get confused between 2 thread stitch, 4 thread combination stitch and so on ... can you please advise me on that and coiuld you forward me a link related to this to know the basics of the machine as I don’t have anything written on the plate where the thread spools are to know which thread goes to U/L/c . Also I don’t have any letters written to turn the knob on N position. Bother these places are black on my machine .I have bought Babylock Evolution Japanese model. I would appreciate if you could help me. Thanks andl love you for your elaborative videos.
    Regards Varsha.

    Just started watching & like. I have the Evolve but seems about the same. I'm trying to do a cover stitch for a knit shirt hem. ( shortening my shirts) My top stitch looks fine but I can't seem to get bottom stitch right. I've tried adjusting which has helped but it will sew few stitches then the edge goes wacky.. Any suggestions. Thanks Carolyn

    I have the ovation and would like to know if the clear foot and the narrow foot work both on coverstitch and overclock.
    Thanks

      These two feet do work with both cover stitches and overlock stitches... The narrow foot is especially helpful when you're going around curves. Thank you for serging along with me, Sorry for the delayed response
