This guy's the model of efficiency... This is how you play maximum guitar with minimum effort. Literally stunned by this guys ridiculously 'Work Smarter, Not Harder' play style. So little movement for the complexity that is showcased. Ive played for 25+ years and what he's doing doesnt even look real its so good....im going right now to re-assess the way im playing. I see what he's doing, and its brilliant. Even better, it is a learn-able (don't care if that's a real word or not it fits) skill! Just never looked at the fretboard that way! Weird. Thank You, my man with the dreds, that is killer stuff!
I'm a 20 year guitar amateur lol, leaning I pick it up and put it back down long ago. Now I'm back because my son is interested. Let me ask, what dofferes in his fret approach or playing style versus what you are used to. I want to support this huy because his vods are good, but I still can't tell "why" it's good and this may be where the answer lies. Let me know.
I bet it doesn't work.. without pickups, amplification, and edits. It's just lots of hammer ons. Not to hate on him but just not sure how it's new, there are lots of players with this style that take it even further.
What I don't get is how is he able to get the hammer ons and pull offs to sound so clear on an Acoustic. Is this a light gauge of string and a lower action?.He doesn't seem to be fretting hard. I am really struggling physically to do this on my Acoustic that has a heavy gauge and high action.
I can't speak to drilling holes making any difference but damn bro you can play that freaking guitar like nobody's business! You're mastery of harmonics is unreal too👍

Its just a clickbait trend for views he would have showed the difference if it really made a huge one and wouldn't have recorded with a bunch of effects on. All these vids are clickbait "I did X to my guitar and it sounds INSANE/UNREAL/CRAZY etc" Overall I imagine it probably wouldn't have a good effect on the sound because acoustic bodies are designed the way they are with the hole where it is for a reason
You play guitar to an extent where my brain cannot figure out whether to listen to it just for the essence of it or to figure out the amazing notes you find out to play. Best wishes man, keep creating beautiful melodies alike.
@@brendencarlson5220 I concur that the type and placement of a pickup determines a whole lot, even to whether some other difference makes any difference at all. Another commenter had mentioned Willie Nelson's axe Trigger in the context of giant air holes, to which I added just now re: the pickup tactic of that same guitar.
Well, the structure is very Japanese. Meaning it's a long, long chord progression, with lots of bridges and choruses, while still sounding coherrent. I like it too, you should check out some Japanese pop/rock if you liked that :)
I expected a comparison but got a heavily processed song where I have no clue if the holes had any effect at all, together with a weird description of "vibrating more freely" but the "losing sustain" how does that fit together? It's just a promotion of his song, I call that clickbait...
I listed a few of your guitar-destroying experiments (like this, the Fireworks one, and the Farewell submerged in water video) to my friend and joked “This man needs to be stopped”, but honestly? Never stop. Your music is incredible and I can’t get enough of it.
It’s so dishonest though. Not saying he can’t play as he’s clearly a very good guitarist but he absolutely drenches the guitars in reverb and delay. I’m worried some kid who has no idea about post-processing is going to dunk his guitar in water and wonder why it sounds utterly shit.
@@UltimateWobbleBoss I think people doing dangerous things have a responsibility to put a disclaimer so that children don’t try it, but I’m not sure the same thing applies to a guy just playing a guitar. He’s already pretty damn clear that it’s destroying the guitar and that you shouldn’t try to do this, I’m not sure what more you could ask from him. Any kid that dunks his guitar in water and finds out it sounds like shit is going to learn about post-processing the hard way, but learning things the hard way is called “being a kid”. I just think it’s really disrespectful to Bernth’s skill to say that his music is “dishonest”. He put in all of the hard work to get this good, that’s the definition of honesty.
@@UltimateWobbleBoss Just to clarify, I’m disagreeing with you but I do respect your opinion and I’m not trying to imply you shouldn’t be saying it. I know people can be real assholes in YT comments so I wanted to be clear on that. I liked hearing your opinion, I just don’t really agree.
adds alot of projection creating a cleaner sound but with less muffled bass.ive done this with guitars and amps.first time I tried using an electric hollowbody guitar that was made with an extra harness cavity. love the acoustics of a gutted hofner with a zero fret, the hofner nut, and labella strings Plays beautiful pizzacato and natural harmonics. Works best in small rooms.
I don't see how the holes would affect the strings at all, but I imagine it increases the resonant frequency of the body. That would boost the highs a bit, boost the mids a bit more, and lose some of the lower range. That would make the guitar brighter and sound more detailed, which is what you're going for in this track. You could probably get the same effect by using a smaller body or putting something in the body to temporarily make the cavity smaller.
Indeed, it is in essence a helmholz resonator, so the bigger the throat area, the higher its resonant frequency. The spacing of the extra sound holes may add some weird muting too
My thoughts exactly, "it sounds unreal" compared to what ? Granted the playing is great (better than great) the song is lovely, but I don't really see the point of the video, especially when you make the effort of videoing yourself drilling the holes, why not make a comparison ?
I came to know you due to your waterworks album/ your farewell song. I don't know about music, but every song I have hear from you sounds like a master piece, it's mindblowing to me. You make me want to pick up a guitar and learn about how to show emotions through music. Thanks my man
Try picking up the drums first if you've never learned an instrument before. It's a lot easier to get into it and sound ok enough to want to practice more, I mean you can sound fairly good with your hands, a desk, and your own thigh. There's lots of other percussion instruments the skills translate fairly well over to. And once you learned one instrument learning another one isn't so hard. Also, a huge plus is you can get an electric set and practice almost completely silently. Not disturbing neighbors or your own self consciousness. Or you can jump straight to guitar, that's what most people do.
As a long time Bernth listener (since damn near the beginning of this channel), I'm glad to see these 'algorithm driven' videos paying off. Anyone who's been a subscriber for more than a year knows how much effort and value this dude brings to the table in every video every week. It's about time the YT algo rewards the almighty BERNTH!!!
This just popped up in my feed and, as a beginner guitarist, I was intrigued. After watching this… I don’t know what to say… I don’t know if I have words to describe how amazing and beautiful this music is. I felt this instant calming effect, like I was being carried away on a breeze. This is just phenomenal.
Holy crap, that was painful to watch! The Guitarist and Luthier in me were both simultaneously screaming in agony and voicing approval. Meanwhile, my Hacker and Maker sides are laughing at the sheer gall, creativity, and devil-may-care attitude that went into doing that to your guitar. Bravo, sir. It sounds awesome.
This isn't just music played on a guitar, this is a magic spell infused with love and the exotic essences of harp and dulcimer! I can hear so many beautiful sounds within sounds. Bravo, dear sound alchemist! ❤
All I heard was electronic processing. Sounded nice but how do you attribute that to holes in the guitar? Its not out of the realm of the possible that the dude is just trolling.
No. It’s a direct detriment to the guitar and nothing but click bait. If you do this it will render the guitar practically worthless for normal use without the addition of post processing. The s/hole is a focal point for a reason. And we don’t build them in this manner for a reason. Basic math. He’s carried by ability and after effect. Don’t be drawn in by nonsense like this.
I’m seeing this a year later and I am amazed at the amount of talent and creativity you have been blessed with. This piece and the piece you did with the guitar in the water are amazing.

Most of people came here to watch how the holes improved the guitar sound, I watched how you swiftly moved your fingers and played and was speechless 🤩
I feel like I’d need a side by side comparison of what the same guitar sounded like before & after the holes were drilled, with the same mic settings, the same impulse response or reverb or whatever you’re using for the space effect, in order to really appreciate how significant or subtle of an effect it had. It sounds good, but I’m sure it sounded good before; impossible to judge without a comparison. I do like the idea of doing a trepanation surgery on your guitar though. 😂 Like the holes release the air pressure inside the resonant chamber & allow the qi to flow.
Played for 20yrs this year. Just diagnosed with Osteomyelitis, go in for surgery soon on one arm, it's caused problems in my median nerve in my other arm to where my thumb pointer and middle fingers are numb and constantly hurt from the neuropathy. Praying everything comes back after surgery. Dk what I'd do without being able to play. But man this thing sounds incredible, your playing makes it sound even better!
Several years ago I had a really bad eczema on both hands so I couldn't play guitar for months. Luckily a very experienced homeopath could help me and it healed completely. So I can understand your sorrow very well. I wish you all the best and that you can play your guitar again soon.
I hope everything goes well! As a fellow guitarist I can relate to the fear of possibly there being a day you can't play. At 33 my hands get sore from playing too much (I play a lot these days) and most mornings my hands, especially my left, are very stiff and sore. I want to get my hands checked out by a doctor, I'm worried it maybe arthritis... The thought of not being able to play or atleast playing how I want is depressing. Wish you the best ✌
My grandfather once told me that guitar is infinite. There is no limit on what you can do on the guitar. The possibilities are endless. Seeing you find those harmonics made me remember that.
Any instrument with strings piano, guitar, violin etc are only restricted by their air flow, container and lenght of strings...plus of course electrical pick ups and tricky processing, which is also unlimited. People make guitars out of cigar boxes... EG ua-cam.com/video/ysx27Wo2a6Q/v-deo.html
@@XX1SICKNTWISTED1XX That's a vitriolic reply, if I ever heard one. I agree with the former guy; take a simple piece like the eternal 'Lagrima'. You can work on that tune forever without getting tired. That's one thing that, say, a pianist never understood with our instrument. A piece like the mentioned; we'll hardly get any cred from them, for whom a similar tune may be played easily like a breeze prima vista. Few other instruments are so welcoming for a beginner, but so demanding for the keen student - said guitar tutor Frederick Maurice Noad.
@@guitarpaul3645 Probably light gauge, low to medium action. His right hand is heavy enough to make it sound crystal clear on amps
The word you were looking for is Learnable. So yes. It is a real word just there's no hyphen
I didnt even know a guitar had the ability to produce such angelic notes that was phenomenal
It'd be a stone in the hands of one not so well practiced.
There's probably plugins on the guitar track. I wish he would have done a before and after with a dry signal.

Its just a clickbait trend for views he would have showed the difference if it really made a huge one and wouldn't have recorded with a bunch of effects on. All these vids are clickbait "I did X to my guitar and it sounds INSANE/UNREAL/CRAZY etc"
Overall I imagine it probably wouldn't have a good effect on the sound because acoustic bodies are designed the way they are with the hole where it is for a reason
He's his own prodigy. You should consider contacting Ovation or doing studio work.
Who cares if the holes did something. The song is just beautiful
You play guitar to an extent where my brain cannot figure out whether to listen to it just for the essence of it or to figure out the amazing notes you find out to play. Best wishes man, keep creating beautiful melodies alike.
your play is amazing man!
He should have performed the same songs before the holes so we have a base line for the improved sound.
would have been exactly the same 90% of it was effects..

The amount of reverb the holes added was amazing.😮

Well, I really wanted to hear the difference before and after, not a pickup in an acoustic run through reverb. So I’ll have to disagree.
@@brendencarlson5220 I concur that the type and placement of a pickup determines a whole lot, even to whether some other difference makes any difference at all. This is one of the most musical pieces I have heard in my life. I loved every second of it.

@Myuunium "erm, uh the point is moot" 🤓
He put in all of the hard work to get this good, that’s the definition of honesty.

adds alot of projection creating a cleaner sound but with less muffled bass.ive done this with guitars and amps.first time I tried using an electric hollowbody guitar that was made with an extra harness cavity. love the acoustics of a gutted hofner with a zero fret, the hofner nut, and labella strings Plays beautiful pizzacato and natural harmonics. Works best in small rooms.
Go back and start watching the video at 1:41 to hear with effects mostly off.
And with and without holes.🙄
I don't see how the holes would affect the strings at all, but I imagine it increases the resonant frequency of the body. That would boost the highs a bit, boost the mids a bit more, and lose some of the lower range. That would make the guitar brighter and sound more detailed, which is what you're going for in this track.
You could probably get the same effect by using a smaller body or putting something in the body to temporarily make the cavity smaller.
Indeed, it is in essence a helmholz resonator, so the bigger the throat area, the higher its resonant frequency. The spacing of the extra sound holes may add some weird muting too
An equalizer would cover all of that
I wish we had a before/after here but the guitar does sound great!
Also sweeping on an acoustic looks nuts. Awesome as always.
Yea, without a before/after, I have no idea if the holes made any difference.
He wouldn't do a before because it makes no difference to his skill
No difference really. Believe me guitar mfrs have tried everything. This was more for getting clicks and views, and it worked
My thoughts exactly, "it sounds unreal" compared to what ? Granted the playing is great (better than great) the song is lovely, but I don't really see the point of the video, especially when you make the effort of videoing yourself drilling the holes, why not make a comparison ?

Thanks my man
Try picking up the drums first if you've never learned an instrument before. It's a lot easier to get into it and sound ok enough to want to practice more, I mean you can sound fairly good with your hands, a desk, and your own thigh.
There's lots of other percussion instruments the skills translate fairly well over to.
And once you learned one instrument learning another one isn't so hard.
Also, a huge plus is you can get an electric set and practice almost completely silently. Not disturbing neighbors or your own self consciousness.
Or you can jump straight to guitar, that's what most people do.
So glad that YT suggested this video to me, that I found you! Your music actually amazing! Subbed!

All I heard was electronic processing. Sounded nice but how do you attribute that to holes in the guitar? Its not out of the realm of the possible that the dude is just trolling.
Also can't tell what's going on with all the effects. Like is that reverb added?
@@TheJofrica That's the treeverb. It's from the treeholes. Treeholes in action.

My grandfather once told me that guitar is infinite. There is no limit on what you can do on the guitar. The possibilities are endless. Seeing you find those harmonics made me remember that.
Not sure that'd been impossible w/o the holes either...
