Xaathar's Guide to Everything changed everything for my group's old DM. Prior to me joining, he'd never owned, let alone read, the books beyond the Core Rule Books. I'd talk about Non-Core races/subclasses and he'd be like "Sounds homebrewed/third-party." Then I borrowed Xanathar's from the library, and showed him the Celestial Warlock, which we had a mild argument about the session prior. I kid you not, this dude, who is a wounded Marine Veteran, who has seen real evil, and has played for 20+ years, and probably seen a lot of crazy things, did the Thousand Yard Stare you see in war movies. One of the other players actually looked at me and said "I think you broke him." It took a little while for him to make his Intelligence/Wisdom save. He gave me a look that was a mix of shock, awe, and respect.
Wish we were still playing...... 2020 was rough, especially with the DM moving.

(Unprompted rant coming at you, but I'm REALLY tired of having to fix WOTC's broken game design so I can use it in my campaigns, so don't take it as a personal attack)
Yeah, why not have Glibness, an 8th level spell, built permanently into your character at level 3. Oh that right, because it's bad game design.
I can make you something a lot more broken if you don't care about being reasonable. Like my Death Knight paladin subclass, except with all the balance nerfs taken out.
It's also ridiculous because the Inquisitive Rogue has a similar thing for Insight (but only against lies), and you treat it as an 8, not 10.

@@Spiceodog It does suck a bit, but (to clarify for any less in the know) Eloquence doesn't get a 10. It gets a 10 on the die, not total. If you're playing Eloquence properly, you also have Expertiese in persuasion/deception, and at least +3 in CHA. Which means you get 17 on one or both of those minimum for ability checks, at level 3. By level 5 it should be on 20.
And it's kind of a moot point that Glibness makes it 15 on the roll, since you're rarely gonna find DC 25 or DC 30 checks. Which, incidentally, you could still make (25) as Eloquence bard when your PROF becomes +5, which is way before one would normally get access to Glibness.

Session zero is the perfect time to discuss house rules, player conduct, content restrictions, that sort of thing. It’s especially important to have a session zero at the beginning of a new campaign, and whenever a new player joins your group. During a session zero, you can go over your house rules, the conduct you expect from your players, the types of content that you won’t allow in your game, and other things. Session zeros are a great way for new players to get to know you, your current players, how you run things at your table, and the things mentioned above. I always have a session zero before running a new campaign, and whenever I have a new player in my group

I play a Beast Master Ranger, it’s also my first time playing the game. I love role playing the Ranger and my DM is flexible with the rules. For instance I have a Giant Spider as a companion currently, but it’s stats are nerfed a bit to compensate. Applying the level system to the companion along with the player was a game changer. That and I can use the Revised Ranger to have my companion hold an attack until an enemy attacks me, it, or someone of my choosing, then my companion can unleash.

1:32:15 - That actually is not a typo, I think. You read it like so: "Here's how to do it: you take any ability score ... increase you gain....". However, this is referencing the ability score increase a character gets from their race, so instead of: ability score, increase you gain, it is more of: take any "ability score increase" you gain..."

  • @andrewkloiber4925

I take the point about "what is something your character likes about each other character?" feeling a little potentially silly. But, I've recently had the opportunity to try playing Vampire: The Masquerade. One thing I really liked about it was, during our session 0, and establishing the cotorie. One of the things we did was, each player established a specific relationship to two other characters: to do this, all we had to do was decide what our character's general impression is of those other characters ("hot headed", "unreliable", "dependable", "leader," etc.). This was useful, because it gave our group a built-in sense of connection between the characters, and attitudes to play off of in game. For instance, if I know my character already thinks another is hot headed, I have a good sense of how my character should be interacting with that character. So while it's not worded the same way in Tasha's, one could expand on that question.

  • @Seergun

Just got to changing subclass: I think the biggest thing you're not catching onto is some people just need to see an idea presented as "official" to actually do/allow it. Also, a lot of things presented here are already (seemingly) somewhat common house rules anyway (floating ability scores probably being the biggest one), so this is just them going "Yes, you're aloud to do these things." Edit: again, for personalizing spells. Idea never really crossed my mind and I never really saw it when playing AL back in the before times. I mean, the picture is of Magic Missile shaped like chickens! I never would have thought of that myself.
I don't think any book before this has had such mixed responses from content creators I follow. I think every section has been both praised and hated by at least one.

  • @thajocoth
    @thajocoth 3 роки тому +1

For the subclass change, if a player is unhappy with their subclass, I already allowed changes, but worked them into the narrative (so they're not immediate). For example, my group's Paladin realized her deity was evil & switched deities (her oath went from Vengeance to Redemption too, so that worked so well). There was a quest involved, and the Ceremony spell (Atonement option), etc... She hadn't mentioned it in advance, but I told her that if she wanted, she could pick a new oath for her Paladin as she switched deities because it was a big deal kinda thing & she's basically making a new oath regardless of whether or not it's a new one.
My game's Druid has started to realize her choices aren't quite what she thought they would be... (It's her first tabletop character ever, so that's not a big surprise.) Her interactions with a Dryad in the next couple of sessions are going to help with that transition.
If someone wanted to change constantly, I'd definitely question that though.

The Steel Defender is amazing. Its ability to apply disadvantage to one attack from an enemy is its most powerful feature. I've played a Battlesmith and that has saved the life of a party member I've lost count how many times. It may only be on one attack of an enemy with multiple attacks, but it matters. Critical hits negated to a normal hit or even a miss. A normal hit to a miss. Occasionally it's enough just to negate an enemy's Advantage on an attack was a factor. Its AC is not the greatest, but that's ok. Any attack against the Defender is an attack that's not against a PC, so it's still doing its job.

I think Custom Lineage is good more for all the races that don't otherwise exist in RAW, like if I wanted to play a Gnoll. It's only +2 to one ability score, so it's automatically sub-optimal, but getting a feat adds a lot (ask any Human). Mechanically, it's Variant Human but with +2 in 1 score instead of +1 in 2, with the ability to swap the skill for Darkvision, and to choose Small if you don't want to be Medium. That's fairly even, really.

Racial stuff I find stupid and unnecessary, subclasses are mostly cool, but unbalanced with the old stuff (and WOTC is apparently alergic to updating old classes properly, they barely mustered something for ranger), new spells are a bit disappointing because half are reprints or the summons which are all the same pattern, and magic items are fine.

I like the idea of the barrier tattoo being used by those who have to attend things where wearing armor isn't socially acceptable, like a dance with members of Nobility, yet want to have some kind of protection. Also, it's a great way to fool would-be attackers into thinking that one is unprotected. Be especially good for Wizards and Sorcerers, who can't wear armor normally, as the one version acts like Plate Armor. Granted, not much good for higher level Monks and Barbarians, who might have an Unarmored AC that equals or exceeds this, but e3ven they might like it at lower levels. Personally, I'd put the value at like 5,000 gold or something, so that it doesn't just get bought at level 1, although the studded leather version I might price at like 2-400 gold.

In a game I'm running they're started at 2nd level following the opening adventure the paladin has a +1 long sword inherited from his mentor (killed prior to the opening scene), the cleric has a repository that functions like a figurine of wondrous power (summoning a lantern archon that's more of dm plot device), the shadow sorceror has discovered his cape is actually enchanted (and because he stole it an orc horde wiped out his home village looking for it).
The last player is running a Rogue whose the manager for the Performer Sorceror and I gave her, her own band of bards who function as a backing band or supporting act to the sorceror.
They're sidekicks who just reached 2nd level as the PCs have now reached 4th level and have almost died a few times in the process even rescuing the prince they were searching for from a cult of one of the Betrayer Gods.

  • @lockwoan01
    @lockwoan01 3 роки тому +1

For changing your subclass, one would figure out why it would work. Taking a Fighter as an example, let's say that they are a Champion, but you want to be an Eldritch Knight - one question the DM could ask is "What's your Intelligence Score?", and if it's 13, and if this fighter is also traveling with a wizard, maybe the idea is that the wizard teaches the fighter some basic spells. Likewise, to turn a Eldritch Knight into a Champion, maybe they suffered a head wound that makes spell casting difficult.
As for the Custom Lineage - great way to make a balanced homebrewed race (I'd probably say that the +1 from a feat can't be on the same stat as the +2, unless one gave a very good reason for it.)
As for the Sidekicks, great way to toughen up NPCs like town guards and bandits without reskinning them with the stat blocks of Champions and Assassins. Also, great way to get a better animal companion than the one the PHB Beastmaster Ranger has, potentially making creatures that have a good bond with their owner, like a merchant's mule, or a Caviler fighter's Warhorse, or a Town Guard's Watch Dog, be a decent tank in a fight. Oh, and let's not forget about those who are on good terms with animals, like Yuan-Ti and their snake friends - got an idea about a Magic Tattoo Artist that's a Yuan-Ti with an Awakened Constrictor Snake and Awakened Giant Poisonous Snake, among other snakes (which may also be awakened), and you don't want to be the fools that harm those snakes.

Actually, using the Heavily Armored Feat as a guideline, in order to qualify for Heavy armor, you'd might need proficiency in Medium Armor, which, again, using the Moderately Armored Feat as a guideline, you might need proficiency in Light armor to get. Thus, I could see possibly giving up proficiency in three tools and/or weapons to get proficiency in Light, Medium, and Heavy Armors. That being said, very few races have proficiency in more than one tool or weapon, via their race, and no background give weapon or armor proficiency (which I think stinks for background that, logically, should have some sort of weapon training - as in Soldier, certain types of Criminals and Sailors and members of Nobility (especially Knights)). On the plus side, it's also a great way to avoid redundancies, like with a Dwarven Fighter, and instead make them a Tool Master.

I feel like a good middle ground with the dynamic ASI would have been to still detail where they normally go even if they give the option to switch it up. They held to that with the old races but going forward they just didn't bother with it. And now you got races like the Fairy where they barely give a paragraph of flavor text and rip out the one unique feature it had in UA to give it generic once perday spells to half ass a replacement.

You work closely with the DM to give the race certain features as they level up and discover the demi-god's own personal strengths that come from both their mortal and immortal parentage. This makes the character not only grow as a class, or whatever "job" they choose, but also their innate abilities as well. I'm going to give it a shot at some point.

I want to buy this book as a pdf, because a pdf is much more useful to me.
When I build or level a character, I make word documents for skills and abilities, and another for spells, and I use them as a reference during play that I can mark up, highlight, make notes in and other things that would wreck a book. And I can distill just the information I want to use.
Also, a pdf is much easier to search for something (CTRL-F).
But right now, the only way I can get a non-physical copy of this book is to either let my game play be tied down to a site like Roll20 or D&D Beyond, or hoist the jolly roger, neither of which interests me.

I'm curious as to how your opinions on this have evolved in the last year. There is some broken stuff in TCoE (Peace and Twilight Domains); some common sense stuff; and some much needed buffs and fixes for classes (Ranger and Sorcerer).
Maybe you've covered this in other videos I've not seen. I'll go have a look. At any rate, below is my stream of consciousness thoughts after concluding the video.
"True roleplayers don't feel the need to optimize; and optimizers simply aren't dedicated enough to roleplaying." Sigh. This attitude always makes me roll my eyes. Not everyone who chooses to optimize is a power-gamer looking to flex on his DM and teammates. Some just like playing characters who are mechanically good at things which their story says they are supposed to be good at doing. My optimized "Custom Lineage" Controller Wizard will unobtrusively elevate his entire team, while your +Con/+Wis Dwarf Wizards struggles to keep pace with the group. Maybe we'll both have fun, though. 😉
Also, tying mental ability scores inextricably to biology is a slippery slope onto which some prefer not to venture.
You seemed to be having a knee-jerk reaction to a lot of this stuff. (I guess that was to be expected given that this was your first look at the book.) Is letting your players arrange their ability score increases optimally really going to unbalance your game? If you give it thought, I'm sure you'll agree it's not. (Yes, I'm aware the video is a year old.)
Disagreements or not, I'm sure I'd have a great time playing at your table. While I do strongly disagree with your take on racial ability scores, etc... and optimization in general, I'm still a subscriber who loves the channel.

I think the key thing to keep in mind is that each GM is the ultimate arbiter of what is and is not allowed in their game. Tasha's presents an expanded "toolbox" for a Game Master to implement for their players, and some structures to suggest for their Game Master.
I understand a lot of frustrations expressed at the new rules that favor "Min Maxers" - changing out any ability scores definitely leaves a lot of room to take advantage of the system and undermine what makes each "species" special - but I think this ultimately falls to each individual Game Master in terms of what they will and won't allow in their games. For me, I've always appreciated new ways to let my players realize their ideal character and backstory - a lot of the new rules here allow for this - but that is a particular situation for me. If another GM isn't comfortable with this, they should be within their rights to restrict players to "Standard" race bonuses.
I absolutely agree that most of the points brought up in the "game contract" should be common sense - but there have been times in my experience (as both player and GM) where talking about some of these points ahead of time would have avoided a lot of conflict and confusion.
Amongst good friends, such a checklist generally isn't needed. But if you're gaming with a new group of friends, I would definitely take many of its points on board (especially if I'm the one running a game for them).
That's not to say that any of your agreements or disagreements are "incorrect" - I believe in many cases you are - but the guidelines presented in Tasha's might be useful in groups where "common decency & couretesy" isn't obvious. I've been in situations where others didn't understand this at the table - so, on a personal level at least, I appreciate the fact that Wizards encourages a basic level of empathy (even though it *should* be obvious) because for some players/GMs; it isn't obvious.

I have a question about npcs that ties into a question about sidekicks. I've been running Lost Mines of Phandelver and am almost at the end of the campaign. When I sat down and wrote down a list of npcs the players could interact with so I could see how they could tie in future plots for our next campaign. The list came out to eight which includes town npcs, npcs they've recruited into their organization and doesn't even include their sidekicks, which admittedly they haven't used much.
My question is, what do you think is the limit on npcs the players are going to interact with in a given town? I feel like sidekicks in a group with a full party are just a distraction and should be forgotten about. Maybe they're mostly useful only in small party situations because I feel like they detract from the main campaign like how over roleplaying travel detracts from the main campaign. Thanks!

In my opinion in a situation like orcs are raiding the town, you get into a townhouse and orcs/goblins/kobolds are surrounding a family about to do god knows what is enough. You don't need to roleplay a scene where the goblins/orc/kobolds are going to rape them, or tear them apart limb by limb, because the imagination there is gonna create worse than you could roleplay just the holy shit that group of bads are about to do terrible things is good enough, for me at least. I also think this situation would fly at most tables even ones that don't want rape scenes or hardcore gore to me its a tasteful way to meet in the middle and still give you a hardcore reason to hate the bad guys.

The answer is complicated but it can be boiled to to this: people are desensitized to violence to some degree, but not to rape as it is seen as beyond the Overton window of acceptable thought. It is also because it’s creepy to describe sex in detail for most people, so describing rape in detail is FAR worse, and even if you’re not describing it, not a lot of people are comfortable dealing with the social issues of it.
