Just watched the movie for the first time and immediately had to google it to see this last scene again. Amazing, the most beautiful scene I've ever watched. Eerie, surreal, sad, there's something that brings David Lynch in mind. Coffee and Cigarettes, along with Limits of Control, must be one of the most genius works in the history of cinematography.
I've watched this movie at last and finally I've heard Bill Rice's voice... Movie's great... but I can't find words to describe Mr. Rice's voice. It's absolutely gorgeous.
Incredible bill rice and taylor meade, thank you Jim Jarmusch ; ever since i saw this I have become a "regular" at the bowery poetry club" where Taylor Meade reads-recites on Monday Nights.
And where Taylor would often times cite Warhol’s johnson more often than not, as he would often used it as a motif in his poetry. Can’t recall one time when I heard him recite his poetry where he didn’t do just that. I miss him!
Champagn.... Oh c'estque'se - delicieouse.... it's all so touching and probably best way to picture some old man as he is. I sort of cryied though im only 32
I knew both of them and drankwith Bill at The Bar on 4th and 2nd ave. I was very happy to see them on the silver screen.Bill laughed when I told him that.
Me too! And every time i see it it touches me just as it did the first time. Thousands of memories are coming to my head, lot's of them sad. By the way, I'm 25... ;-)
I think this is the most mainstream, conventional, linear narrative movie Taylor Mead did. And it's a Jim Jarmusch film! This is as "aboveground" as Taylor Mead got.
I keep coming back to this absolutely brilliant bit of whatever the hell it is. This is the way I want to check out. Cash in my chips. Pop my cloggs. And "Take Five" would be my music. And there would be naked dancing girls. Hey, I never said I was Jim Jarmusch
Through mutual friends I had the great pleasure of befriending Taylor while I lived in the East Village from 2009-2011. He was such a personality, and a crazy nut in the best ways possible, and no one has, or had, a voice so perfectly fitting for one who’s life revolved around poetry as Taylor. And what a slob he was, but somehow it all lended to his uniqueness. The whole of the Lower East Village loved, and adored him, and as crass as he was, he was immensely charming. Watching this again, I can’t help but cry a bit while I’m reminded of just how much I miss him, and his voice. RIP Young Man!
I guess the compression on this video has amplified the music. Makes it seem a bit less spectral and unreal. Ach! (Just have to buy the film, I guess.)

Ah. Probably the best dialog I've ever heard.
I cried after watching this. So beautiful... the nature of simplicity in happiness, and how often it is overpassed....
ngl i felt the same after Shrek 2
I wish this scene was longer...I could watch these guys talk forever.
"Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen" was the funeral song of my father...
i will love you forever dad!
What a great, poetic, simple vision!! I love Jarmusch.
This is my favorite short in the film. It is delightful and satisfying. Thank you Jim Jarmusch!
To the lovely Bill Rice and Taylor Mead..still missed by some of us who knew you.😢❤
It breaks my heart every time I watch it. It's just so touching and fragil, so much lost of the world's touch! I could just cry!

never seen two such wonderful ghosts, not even in my own mirror, and both are older than the other one - sheer beauty
A sweet & gentle soul needs that gruff & grounded friend, just as the gruff & grounded need that buddy who's a crazy dreamer!
Jarmusch saved the best for last. Reduced to tears after seeing this.
You’re right on with this take about where it was placed of all the vignettes. Good eye!
The first time I saw this scene I cried, made me feel lotta ideas bout my life (I'm 24). Thanx Jarmusch!!!!
Bill and Taylor ! ..so sweet...i have a lovely painting by Bill and some of my favorite NY memories ever of Taylor
this is the best scene I have ever seen. well my favorite scene in cinema. I've watched it so many times. just amazing.
best scene out of any movie almost. inspires so many ideas and filmed and written perfectly.

This is cinema, not the pretend action crap with non-actors and 99% CGI!
I'm in love with this scene!
he's napping ,you can see his rapid eye movement indicating he's dreaming. such a beautiful scene
Champagn.... Oh c'estque'se - delicieouse.... it's all so touching and probably best way to picture some old man as he is. I sort of cryied though im only 32
The Opus - Divorced
Brought me here, beautiful hiphop song, starts off with this beginning dialog
I knew both of them and drankwith Bill at The Bar on 4th and 2nd ave. I was very happy to see them on the silver screen.Bill laughed when I told him that.
Certainly my favourite scene of the film. Did anyone else think it is implied he dies at the end of this scene?
Yes
No, he falls asleep... that's all
In an interview Taylor Mead sad 'towards the end of the scene, when I fall asleep or die or whatever the hell I do'...
Yes, I did.
I always cry but I'm happy his friend was there for him when he went to sleep
Let's pretend it's champagne.
Why would we do that?
Well, to CELEBRATE LIFE.
amazing work of cinematography. one of my favorites ever.
how can this silly dialogue be so short and so F***NG GOOD?
Taylor Mead, the sweetest person to ever live.
The best scene! A total escapist attitude! Have not seen anything like it!
Me too! And every time i see it it touches me just as it did the first time. Thousands of memories are coming to my head, lot's of them sad.
By the way, I'm 25... ;-)
For me one of the best scenes.
I think this is the most mainstream, conventional, linear narrative movie Taylor Mead did. And it's a Jim Jarmusch film! This is as "aboveground" as Taylor Mead got.
Ohhh, say it isn't true.
You're so provincial, Bill
all of us,could be one of them someday
the greatest scene I have seen in my life too..
What a lovely scene...

Clearly, you are not.

Two of the most New York people to ever exist.
I hope I end up like this someday.
Poetic...
Came here via Djrum's 'Showreel, Pt. 3'. Not sure what to think, honestly.

Pretty interesting/coincidental that Taylor Mead’s birthday is December 31st- born on the cusp of a new year, and asleep at the very end of this film.
Rest in Peace Taylor Mead
Good night Taylor, wings from your back carry you home.
Ich leb' allein in meinem Himmel, in meinem Lieben, in meinem Lied.
haha i love this. it's so sweet and funny.
@AlecKronicle After death there are sometimes muscle spasms. He could actually be dead and his muscles flinching in their last and ultimate unwind.
What an incredible scene, but isn't this clip missing the key last line from Mead, "I should have drank more champagne."?
This is so good.
Brillia scene.

To be honest, It is on my PC for quite some time now, and still have not watched it. I am kindof keeping it for a bit special company....
All past were better .......... if we have good memories......and not forget it
It is good when old people imagine things to make life better. Problem is young people nowdays do it the same way.
CELEBRATE LIFE.
🚬☕
Yes.
@akanathan that's Taylor Mead, yo!
When he tells him that he has no Joie de vive, Bill Rice looks so hurt. D'aaw.
@merrylunatic I think he meant it to be ambiguous :)
I guess the compression on this video has amplified the music. Makes it seem a bit less spectral and unreal. Ach! (Just have to buy the film, I guess.)
well said, well said.
What movie is this?
Coffee & Cigarettes by Jim Jarmusch, the most important film maker of the 90s along with Van Sant.
@gremlin05 hes not dead, just sleeping. notice how he moves his lips around
good
@mailloud I envy you, I'd kill to listen to him reciting...
Taylor Mead is his name the older man that is.
Pinteresque perhaps?
Oh my god, the old man dies. I guess that's why it's the end.
Billy Tran not quite dead. asleep.
I used to think the guy on the left was Charles Bukowski. Looks kind of like him but it’s not.
ya, this one is good.. but i disagree with you the movie was great
best scenes are iggy pop & tom waits, and bill murray, gza & rza
I just wanted to see if you would still respond 12 years after posting your comment ! Loved the Iggy Pop and Alfred Molina skits.
And I want to see if you will reply 3 years after your own comment. I loved the Iggy Pop one and also the Joseph Rigano and Vinny Vinnella scene.
There isn't anything romantic about two old queens working a dead end job.
