I think there is nothing average about Tom Waits. If he makes a raw and unfinished song, it is perfect. If he writes about a chocolate Jesus, it is like burning tar and yet still sweet. He changed my life in many ways, and opened my eyes to unknown kinds of beauty wherever I go.
I just discovered this video and started searching for some of his other vids and in my own humble opinion, I think he is a genius! His songs carry an eerie sound with deep meanings. Creative people tends to have their own footprints without them knowing.
Graxxor Anandro Vidhelssen : I use the idea of blasphemy as a rhetorical standpoint to challenge the prevailing orthodoxy not only in the fallaciousness of a belief in a higher power, but also to challenge the necessity of maintaining the ritual of the mystery that when we cannot know something that it must be the work of that alleged higher power. For such people, the uknowable frightens them, and it drives them further into the darkness, because there’s more comfort in ignorance than there is in self-discovery and reality.
This was the first version of the first Tom Waits song I heard, when he first opened his mouth, my face fell off. His voice sounds like cigar smoke, caked in mud, and soaked in scotch-truly one of the most unique, interesting, and genuine artists out there, even today. A fantastic example of how music should feel. Tom, you somehow managed to win music.
17 currently. I'm completely amazed by his voice. Not a fan of his music, but completely astonished by his voice. Think I'm gonna come back to this in a few years and start to love it. I think thats a good plan.
You sir have a misunderstanding of the term 'hallmark' it is a signature of an idea or work that lends authenticity to something, it is not the essence of something but a pointer.
@@ericpreston5826, you have taken advantage of my impatience with dull moments and my ADD's constant quest for novelty. You are likeable enough to me to want you to be a real friend. Will you be that instead of a bittersweet ending? You have been a tremendous muse for me. That or go away. Does that work for you? Help! Help! I'm being repressed.
Only one thing worse than living this long without Tom and that would be living any longer without Tom. May I suggest, start at the beginning, see how his music matures, his voice ages and his soft side becomes deliciously obvious. I am envious of you, I have heard everything he's done and I (in an odd way) wish I could listen to each and every one again for the first time.
It took me too long to get into Tom Waits. Now that my taste has developed, I have weekly Waits on Saturday Night and share it with my father to connect. Thanks Tom!
holy shit....i am coming back to all those tom waits video, kinda every year once...now, i realise.....14 years have passed...i am kinda getting old ...

Nemesis Potato yeah, I agree. Anyways, hobo is a word I've heard on Nickelodeon, a kind of cartoony cute expression for a homeless person. Waits has his schtick. And it can send shivers down the spine of a nun.
I’ve known Tom Waits since about 1976. Saw him in an unremembered theater in LA. Was impressed with his performance. This video just shows what I missed in not watching him grow. This performance is just amazing.
I remember him on a talk show in the 70's and they asked about his alcohol use, He said I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frotal lobotomy.
I believe the correct saying is, ‘I’d rather have a full bottle in front of me, than a full frontal lobotomy.’ An oldie but a goodie. But I also love Festers comment in the new Addams Family with Jena Ortega, ‘lobotomy’s are like tattoos, you can’t just get one !’
My goal as an artist is to paint as good , as excellent as Tom Waits can sing, write songs, perform, and …well make music. He is F R E A K I N' AWESOME-Sauce!! Super talented, so soulful, so intensely into what he's doing it consumes his every molecule, yet he still can dance away & take a funny satirical and humble look at what he is & smirk, smile, laugh. Then step back in and sing his heart out till he make you cry. I love this guy.

Bukowski unfortunately was a sad drunk, wallowing in angst.. Waits has great humor.. great breadth of vision... unsurpassed physical style, real musicianship and art. It's like comparing a wifebeater -mailmanwriter with... well with Waits ! Love 'em both.. only wanna have a drink with one of them.. of course bukowski is dead.. but still.
I always love when hosts actually have intellectual musicians on their show. Is Dave a musician or does Paul talk him into getting awesome guys on his show?
+Moozle Yak letterman always had great guests, either as musical performance or to be interviewed. he always brought the weirdos, the avant-garde, the folk and the artsy to the mainstream, if only for a little while. too bad he didn't always do them justice as an interviewer, though.
+Charles Crumb He had great off-beat performers 'til the end. Tom was on one of his final shows, and I remember watching his show in the mid to late 2000s when he had Winehouse when she first hit it big, Goldfrapp, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs before Gold Lion and Zero made them a big name.
Tom Waits is a treasure, and I love his iconic performance of Chocolate Jesus. He was also superlative as The Devil in The Imaginarium Of Dr Parnassis. I could not imagine anyone performing that role better than he. Brilliant !
Jesus is just as you say Tommie. Melt in the mouth spectacular!!!. Can't imagine how music was digested before you bespoke your verbal mastication. I am no longer hungry

Graxxor Anandro Vidhelssen: That would be ma’am, actually.
No such thing as blasphemy. Get away from those kiddie abusers, and get a life.
Uma obra de arte. É uma pena não poder ser exposta ao vivo em todos os museus do mundo.
The hat full of sparkling glitter when he salutes was such an awesome touch at the end :')
Glitter and doom. :)
He's a flawless showman.
This version of a song was a perfect introduction do Tom Waits.
Heard it over a decade ago and still loves it the same.
Man, what a artist... :)
One of the all time best live performances. Tom's talent is something else.
Tom is going to be remembered as one of the greatest in USAs music history
Há dois tipo de pessoas no mundo. As que gostam de Tom Waits e as outras.
Simplesmente divinal ❤
He is a walking, talking, singing piece of art.
Tom Waits, loved his works since the 70's. and I was considered weird then and even till today... Thank YOU very much.
17 currently. I'm completely amazed by his voice.
Not a fan of his music, but completely astonished by his voice.
Think I'm gonna come back to this in a few years and start to love it.
I think thats a good plan.
So did you come back?
@@garyphisher7375 I don't think they did. Haha, their loss
That’s what I said when I first heard him in 1986 I tried quite hard to hate him but he won my heart in the end. Now, nobody else does it for me
Style is the hallmark of talent.
Art is not a technique, it is an idea.
You sir have a misunderstanding of the term 'hallmark' it is a signature of an idea or work that lends authenticity to something, it is not the essence of something but a pointer.
+Tommyfazz
so Nige you're wrong, Haplessly so.
even if ...
cant close g mail
Happy Easter...my favourite Easter anthem!!!
There is no comparison. He is the one and the only.
I NEED confetti in my frickin' pockets!!!!!
for real. would bring life's dull moments to bittersweet ending
So well put.
That's just how I learned about Tom. I recommend the same method for Bruce Cockburn.
Best live performance of all time.
That's one hell of a fucking amazing song and performance..that way he moved with the song .... Timeless
Great art. Even better than the album version. Love the intro and love the banjo even more.
A true independent artist, a genius in his own right.
Jesus. Only Tom Waits can alter a Tom Waits rhythm.
WILLY WONKA’S GOT NOTHING ON THE CHOCOLATE JESUS!!! MELTED HOLY GOSPEL GOODNESS
There will never be an other Tom waits
If there ever was an artist with their own totally unique style that no one could replicate it would be Tom
Good.
If there was he wouldn't be appreciated i think of tom as one of the most underrated artists of the last 100 years
A haunting melody with some legitimate classic blues chops
this song makes you feel like a frog in a swamp, but you just found out your frog wife died and now you're a depressed frog in a swamp.
Nailed it
hahahaha wow thats fuckin spot-on, man; I hope you don't mind me using that description in the future
accurate as fuck
It took me too long to get into Tom Waits. Now that my taste has developed, I have weekly Waits on Saturday Night and share it with my father to connect. Thanks Tom!
holy shit....i am coming back to all those tom waits video, kinda every year once...now, i realise.....14 years have passed...i am kinda getting old ...
Tom is the best, no one beside or even close
+Frankie Shankly It's so true. In a world where nothing hasn't already been done, Waits is a true original.
+Amelia Bee и таких оригинальных людей очень мало.....они есть, но скорее всего неизвестны....
P.S. Извините что пишу на не популярном языке =)
+Frankie Shankly No one has come even close..? Bullshit! What about Captain Beefheart and his masterpiece "Trout Mask Replica" xD
+Falma Oni Да ладно :)
+Dustin McGladrey
Tom must be a fan, especially Frown Land, which is very Waits-like in its sentiment.
The absolute master of cool. Mmm. Pander to me, whiskey man.
+Amelia Bee
The absolute Master Of Cool.
mASTER OF COOL AND CONSCIENOUS.......SP.....i DONT' CARE!
Utter Splend!
I love Tom Waits for a reason.
Channelling Cab Calloway,
From his hands.
To his knees.
Cab and or Satchmo
the banjo kills it, amazing track
Every time Tom Waits sang, a flower became clinically depressed.
following Mr.Waits for about 40 years... an American poet 🔥😊
17 years this has been up. 17 years. Jeesh, where’s it all going? I swear. Well, I better get go it. Songs of redemption call me again.
Here’s to the next 17. Seein’s that I’m 60, it’ll be a spell. So restart that bubble machine please!🇺🇸
Tom Waits is what happens when you let a drunk philosopher sing songs to you on his guitar.
exactly, and it's just wonderful! :D
Nemesis Potato yeah, I agree. Anyways, hobo is a word I've heard on Nickelodeon, a kind of cartoony cute expression for a homeless person. Waits has his schtick. And it can send shivers down the spine of a nun.
Hahaha funny
Nice try. First you have to put on the uniform. Then spring training. Then take the team bus to the stadium. Then get past the cops. Then think.
Not brilliant, as the drunk thing was over around 1976. So, brilliant not applicable. Therefore...well, it just goes downhill from there.
"immaculate confection" how did that not get a laugh
IKR I lmao. No lapsed catholics in the audience i guess.
pearls before swine lol
brave, brave, brave.....so cool and brave...he is an original freak....yeah i love him
I’ve known Tom Waits since about 1976. Saw him in an unremembered theater in LA. Was impressed with his performance.
This video just shows what I missed in not watching him grow.
This performance is just amazing.
The only legal form of autotune should be Tom Waits screaming through a bullhorn.
His voice is crazy! I can't believe I've never heard it before!
He was the inspiration for the voice of the Joker played by Heath Ledger in the Dark Night
Make sure you look into some of his early classics like 'Ruby's Arms', 'On the Nickle', 'Small Change', or 'Shore Leave'.
His voice is crazy, listen to his early stuff and progress through the years as you become twisted and broken like his visions. It's wonderful.
Only two people understand Here the Word Play that He drew from that statement answer
Been following tom waits sense 1975 never tired i will ever get of him
Tom Waits: the last genious of popular music.
'Immaculate Confection' - I'll always laugh
I still do. x
Not religious but I would go to Tom's church.
Genius on display.
Chocolate Jesus
Bem, eu não ir à igreja no domingo
Não ficar de joelhos para orar
Não memorizar os livros da Bíblia
Tenho a minha própria maneira especial
Eu sei que Jesus me ama
Talvez um pouco mais
eu cair de joelhos todos os domingos
Na loja Zerelda Lee doces
Bem, eu tenho que ser um chocolate Jesus
me fazer sentir bem dentro
Tem que ser um chocolate Jesus
Manter-me satisfeito
Manter-me satisfeito
At some point in time he grew up around black folk. We love you brother.
Bukowski would´ve loved dis. & so would Jesus .
+Par N Funnny you say this, cause I was thinking about how he reminds me Bukowski
+bruxinhadcd Right on !
Bukowski unfortunately was a sad drunk, wallowing in angst.. Waits has great humor.. great breadth of vision... unsurpassed physical style, real musicianship and art. It's like comparing a wifebeater -mailmanwriter with... well with Waits ! Love 'em both.. only wanna have a drink with one of them.. of course bukowski is dead.. but still.
Huh ? Am a bit confused here .. but I take it it´s good ole Buk u wanna share a gallon of vodka with ? ABSOLUT !
***** wrong drinking with dead poets.. is so.. nothing.
Tom Waits is in my opinion one of those few and far between (and vastly underrated/underappreciated) artists who are truly unique
Brilliant ! Astonishing ! Genial as always !
Now that’s performance art!!!! Thank You for sharing.
Happy 66 Birthday Tom Waitts...
Yup, its today
june
The first time I heard Tom waits was in Philadelphia at a Beth Hart concert, i've been hooked since.
Still......?
What a treat.
the banjo is so beautiful with toms voice, reminds of traditional greek music that my yiayia loves
"Immaculate confection"
Brilliant
What the Choc! Put your teeth to the groove...
Tom Waits is like a Frank Sinatra for the lost souls.
Tom Waits is a treasure, and I love his iconic performance of Chocolate Jesus. He was also superlative as The Devil in The Imaginarium Of Dr Parnassis. I could not imagine anyone performing that role better than he. Brilliant !
"Ok Tom,here's the mic and you just..."
Tom pulls out loudspeaker
"Umm...okay."
Hahaha
Great track, unmatched execution. Tom Waits неподражаем.
Jesus is just as you say Tommie. Melt in the mouth spectacular!!!. Can't imagine how music was digested before you bespoke your verbal mastication. I am no longer hungry
