  • Try not to mind the fact that I sound like I'm dying, I was still recovering from a cold when I voiced this one... ^_^;
    Anywhoo, today on Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look at Whiplash, also known as Fatal Racing, a 1996 racing game developed by Gremlin Interactive and published by Interplay, completely steeped in mid-90s aesthetics.
    On the surface, this game looks super-generic, but dig a little deeper and you discover it's actually somewhat different from typical racing games in subtle, often unseen ways. It otherwise plays perfectly fine... provided you have an analog joystick/gamepad. :P
    ------------------------------------------
    Additional Information and Corrections:
    * After doing some research on the NEXT game I'm covering, I realized the hint should've read "paid sequel" not "shareware sequel", as I can't find evidence of the game having a shareware release... Whoops. :P
    * There's actually more tracks to unlock than I realized, but the manual and box don't allude to any of it and the difficulty was so high I wasn't able to discover any of it myself. :o
    * One feature I neglected to mention is that you get extra points in the Championship mode for causing fatalities to the other racers. However, getting this to happen without scaling up the damage can be a bit tricky as I never scored a single fatality the entire time I was playing. :P
    * I accidentally forgot to talk about the replay system in here as it's actually really extensive. Since you always go back to the main menu following a race, even in Championship Mode, you always have the ability to save a replay of your latest race and can do all sorts of functions while playing it back including different cameras and focussing on different vehicles!

    So a couple notes on game versions: The original Fatal Racing had a few bugs and quirks in it that did get changed in an update. The US version, Whiplash, is based on the patched Fatal Racing. The notable differences I am aware of are as follows:
    * The REVERSE gear was removed entirely [I'll get to the significance of this later, but this only majorly affects quick-pitting]
    * Support for non-local players was added (Modem, Serial Cable, or IPX Network), and with it, the ability to customize messages in networked multiplayer (sent by F5-F8)
    * "False Starts" was renamed to "Engine Damage" (but otherwise has exactly the same effect - sometimes your engine won't turn on)
    * Perspective Correction was added to GFX Detail (I don't know offhand what it does)
    The US release also uses a different copy protection method than Fatal Racing (A CD Check for the host as opposed to a code lookup).
    Now, onto stuff Gemini missed or got wrong:
    * There is actually a third set of 8 tracks, the "BONUS" cup. It's unlocked by being the champion on the PREMIER cup on impossible (or DEATH) difficulty (your team winning is not enough in 16-car championships). You can also unlock the PREMIER and BONUS cups by entering your name as GOLDBOY (for PREMIER) and MR EPRISE (for BONUS). When entering a "code name" like this, the game will automatically change your name to confirm you got it right.
    * On the topic of the Bonus cup, it actually has some of the most interesting (and buggy) courses in the game. Bonus 3 is infamous for its sheer length (10 laps on Girlie difficulty, with a usual lap being 55 seconds if nothing goes wrong). Bonus 7 is basically "Roulette: the race track". AI drivers on the cup will attempt to pit in the wrong areas, causing them to stay still until another AI (or you) "helpfully nudge" them. Bonus 8 contains the trapdoor that would've gone in the Death Drop track. But Bonus 4 is considered the most difficult course in the entire game. There are no turns, it's a straight line. The Pit is completely unguarded and incredibly short, and the one car respawn point being exactly in the middle of the road means it's entirely possible to go from having a perfectly fine first car to DESTROYED with no ability to recover (unless you're using a particular one of the 5 CHEAT cars).
    * Difficulty has a few effects, with the most notable one being race length. Note that Impossible and DEATH (use the "DR DEATH" code to activate DEATH difficulty and damage scaling) use the same race lengths.
    * So the AI players in general ignore the Acceleration and Braking stats, having an effective MAX stat on both of them. While braking is mostly irrelevant, Acceleration does matter at the start. If you use the Advanced Car set (which can be unlocked via the FORMULA1 code), all cars will have maxed stats across the board regardless of what is shown during car selection.
    * Acceleration and Braking strength is based on what gear you are in, with acceleration being better at higher gears and braking being strongest in REVERSE [with NEUTRAL being the best option in the patched versions].
    * Gemini mentioned "Quick-Pitting". There's a couple notes: First, you keep getting pit work until you start moving, whether from revving up in 1st Gear or getting rammed by an opponent. If you rev up in NEUTRAL, however, you don't move, which means you can keep the engine going while Pit Work is going and then shift into 1st Gear when it's done. This actually leads into the best quick-pitting technique: Downshift to Neutral (or REVERSE) and brake (or slam into a pitting car's backside to stop), keep revving in Neutral so that your engine stays on, and then upshift to 1st Gear the moment your damage is repaired.
    * The medians of the Corkscrews are actually magnetic, oddly enough. That's how I handled them as a kid when I didn't figure out the proper way to do them. The Corkscrews of Bonus 1 are fully magnetic, too.
    * The Twister jumps are probably one of the more difficult things to do properly because your speed and where you leave the ramp all matter. This also means it's possible to screw them up for the AI cars by ramming them at the right moments.
    * Incidentally, the programmers failed the math lesson that covered converting KPH to MPH and back, as the speeds given in the game do not line up correctly. For instance, the sweet spot I've found for the Twister jumps is in the 150-170MPH range, which would be the 240-273KPH range. Yet Gemini's sweet spot was about 300 KPH, which is 186MPH. Going at the speed the game claims is 186MPH WILL flip your car over.

      As a follow-up to this monster of a comment, I'm going to discuss some of the various cheat codes. I mentioned a couple cheats in the other comment, but I'll be elaborating on them here.
      To enter any of these codes, use them as YOUR name. If you did it right, your name will get replaced with another name, which can then be replaced with your normal name (or another code name).
      First off, the unlock codes:
      * GOLDBOY unlocks the PREMIER cup, which is normally unlocked by being the champion in any championship on the Gremlin cup (even a 2P Head-to-head championship).
      * MREPRISE unlocks the BONUS cup, which is normally unlocked by being the champion in the PREMIER cup on Impossible (or DEATH) difficulty.
      * FORMULA1 unlocks the Advanced Car set, which have maxed stats across the board and alternate color schemes.
      The Cheat cars are interesting. When you have one, an additional control option is available for rebinding, which handles the cheat effect of the car. For 4 of these cars, you get a number of "charges" for the cheat effect, which are represented by boxes in the bottom-left corner of your screen and can be replenished by pitting. All cheat cars have high stats with a 6-gear engine, and in 16-car races you will be considered on the Auto Ariel team. The codes are as follows:
      * MAYTE: Nitro car (infinite charges). Note that this car can still use nitro even when exploding, and when it is doing so, it retains its hitbox. On Bonus 4, this is significant since it can wipe out the entire grid while exploding.
      * SUICYCO: Destruction Car. Using the cheat effect destroys a target car in front of you instantly, giving you the fatality point.
      * 2X4B523O: Spin Car. Using the cheat effect flips a target car in front of you and spins it.
      * TINKLE: Launch car. Using the cheat effect tosses a target car in front of you straight up with no forward or backwards momentum. (Cars that are airborne won't hit each other)
      * LOVEBUN: Ice car (uses a unique car: The Formula One car). Using the cheat effect makes a short region of track ahead of you icy.
      Now onto the gameplay affecting codes:
      * REMOVE undoes any cheat effect that isn't one of the above unlocks or a cheat car. For instance, with DR DEATH, REMOVE will revert the difficulty and damage scale options back to what you had previously set.
      * DR DEATH changes (and locks) the Difficulty and Damage scale to DEATH. This uses the Impossible difficulty lap counts, maxes driver aggressiveness, and massively ramps up the damage received from all sources (including other cars). It is entirely possible for fatalities to occur in the first 10 seconds of a race as a result.
      * DUEL replaces all AI drivers with MR EVIL cars. These cars have maxed stats all around AND cannot be targeted by any Cheat Car effect.
      * MR ZOOM and TACHYONS Increase game speed (Faster and Fastest, respectively)
      * SUPERMAN makes you invulnerable.
      * MRFROSTY makes the entire course icy like BONUS 7
      * TINYTOTS makes the cars much smaller overall, which can make some of the bonus tracks more playable.
      * WARPGATE makes the cars fluctuate in size.
      * YOTARACE makes the tracks larger.
      There's a few other cheats that are generally aesthetic only or otherwise just show a thing:
      * TOPTUNES replaces the announcer sounds with an alternate set.
      * CINEMA does a Widescreen Mode thing.
      * ROLL EM shows the credits sequence
      * I WON shows the "You won a race" sequence
      * CUPWON shows the championship sequence
      * FREAKY does weird things to the colors... I don't recommend it.

      Zeta This is the difference one week with a game versus a lifetime can produce in terms of results, and kinda goes to show how much deeper it all goes! Also, in the early days of 3D textured polygon graphics, "Perspective Correction" was additional calculations used to ensure the textures were applied PERFECTLY, but is considerably more GPU/CPU intensive. Basically, if the textures on objects look like they're warping in weird ways, that's rendering without perspective correction. :B

    • @jameswild266
      @jameswild266 6 років тому +6

      I'd expect it's the difference between "affine" and "perspective-correct" texture mapping yeah (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texture_mapping#/media/File:Perspective_correct_texture_mapping.jpg ). Lot of time playing this one as a kid.

      Me and my friend used to play Fatal Racing our own way in school. We got ourselves best cheat cars (Formula 1 and some other one), activate DRDEATH and made ourselves invincible. Then we raced 2nd or 3rd set of tracks, competing at who can destroy most AI cars, with each car color assigned a different score. Super fun times! But playing this game without cheats was too hard and boring - it didn't allow it to show its wonky physics. The thrill of launching an AI car into crazy bounce from side to side of a narrow piece of track until it exploded was overwhelming. This was like Carmageddon, but with more interesting track and no annoying pedestrians (I never liked this part of Carmageddon), or like Destruction Derby done right.

    This ran great on my 486 toaster back in the day. I remember picking it up in a bargin bin and thinking it was going to be an FMV racer because I didn't think my el-cheapo computer I'd cobbled together could run a game like this.

    BTW, there is a *third* cup, but its quite wacky. Also, another set of cars.
    Took me years to unlock!
    To unlock: play a 2 player split screen championship and keep forfeiting - it will award the player 2 with the victory and unlock the stuff.

    So many hours playing this in the 90s and early 2000s. My family had a Celeron back then and no speakers on our first PC as it had no sound card yet, but I was able to play this as my main Racing game. Eventually was able to get a sound card with speakers made the game much better for me and my sister...

    Awesome game, played this one and Grand Prix 1 & 2 a lot. There's a drdeath difficulty behind a cheat code which is pretty damn hard, opponents will have it out for you and sometimes there'll be 3 going against traffic behind each other. The Mission Plus is really good in that one, where up to Impossible the Globals are great up to impossible but maneuvrability becomes more a thing in toughest difficulty. You can between (5?) camera views to the 'chase' camera just behind your car, which is nice to do a quick brakeslam when you see your opponent steering into you and have them bump the wall.. You can also use this in loops to go to the in-car camera so the view doesn't do a double 180. There's also a neutral gear that you can use to drive off after a pit stop so the engine is running.

    I never had an analogue input device, only a keyboard but I still played this game like a maniac until I was able to win all races on impossible difficulty including all the hidden bonus tracks. Fun times, still in my top 3 favorite racing games of all time (the other 2 are Carmaggeddon and Wreckfest)

    My bad if I missed it during the video but I remember this game having 3DFX support on some version of the game. My Copy in particular was packed in with the Orchid Righteous 3D I got for my pc as a kid.

    • @Tempora158
      @Tempora158 6 років тому +4

      The 3DFX patch was available for download on Interplay's website for the retail version. IMO, the best 3D accelerated version of this game is the Rendition Verite version, because the 2D HUD elements are completely intact with the 3D acceleration, while the 3DFX version simplifies the HUD to just text and rectangles.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  6 років тому +3

      +Akaikabe Hardware graphics support wasn't baked into the original release and looked to be way more confusing than just supporting a single API, so I decided to not mention it, especially since the game was already very playable. :B

    • @Tempora158
      @Tempora158 6 років тому +5

      Yeah, the game runs fine now given the massive CPU speed we can throw at the game's highest detail software renderer, but back in 1996, no way could you possibly play the game at anything approaching an acceptable framerate in SVGA resolution without a supported 3D accelerator card.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  6 років тому +1

      +Tempora158 Actually, a P90 or better combined with a video card capable of using the VESA 2.0 LFB probably would've played the game perfectly fine in SVGA and would've been a typical above-average Pentium system setup around when this game came out. Wouldn't be 60 FPS but would still be playable for sure. :B

    • @Akaikabe
      @Akaikabe 6 років тому +1

      Not a problem, just I thought I'd mention it just in case you hadn't noticed and/or was interested trying it 3D accelerated . Keep up the good work nd get well soon man :D

    So the one week I have no idea what game the clue refers to... it turns out to be a game I have two copies of. One is part of one of those "Gamefest" shovelware collections, the other is a sealed boxed copy I found at a Goodwill a year or two ago. Neither have been played, as it happens.
    Still, it's always nice to cap off like three eps of "being the only correct guess" with "I should've known this one but didn't."

    Aside of the box-art, title- and loading screen Fatal Racing has another major difference with Whiplash, the announcer during the races. In Fatal Racing it's same which describes the tracks, in Whiplash it appears to be Larry Huffman, a race announcer and voice actor, also the announcer in Rock & Roll Racing (Megadrive/SNES). Still own a legal copy of Fatal Racing. Spent hours playing it.

    I loved this game back then. Used to run it on my 486 dx2/66 and it used to run perfectly well in the low res mode with my ISA graphics card. Then I remember visiting a friend who had a cirus logic VLB card and saw it first time running in high-res (640x480) and was amazed. Never tried it with analog controls though; keyboard only. I think I'll need to give that a try.

    Suggestions for next season of ADG:
    -Have Gilligan finally get off the island.
    -A prequel which explains DOS actually runs on something called Midichlorians
    -a story arc which reveals a horse was actually training you to be a princess (despite, you know, you being a dude) the whole time.
    -You kill off the main character and solving his murder is the very first class trial the viewers are presented with, but from now on they play as someone who is just like the main character of the last two games.
    -The canon suddenly takes place in a modern world full of humans despite all previous games suggesting that it was a world full of bipedal animals and the industrial-themed bad guys were the only humans there.
    -Kris gets transported to another planet where he and all his friends (and enemies) are upstaged by some rich kid named Chris Thorndyke.
    -You spend the entire season suddenly doing secret agent/James Bond-ish stuff which doesn't go over well with audiences so in an attempt to save the series you reveal the whole spy thing was actually a dream the main character was having.
    -Instead of solving mysteries, Kris instead gets hired as a gym teacher at an all-girls school (how a man got hired at an all-girls school is anybody's guess) where the girls all happen to be the daughters of famous monsters, but a spider-witch named Revolta wants to mind control all of them for... reasons.
    -Do an interview revealing that you plan to remove from canon the game which revealed the Belmonts were relatives of Dracula, but word it in a way that implies your real problem was it starred a woman. Go on to produce a fighting game that nobody likes despite it honestly looking kinda fun.
    -Fail to get any of my allusions.
    Yes I am a massive nerd and I'll be kinda shocked if anyone gets every single reference I just made.

    Also in the spinny jumps you should know that if you don't reach the minimum speed required, you can always adjust the jump by going a bit more to the right and if you're going too fast you should try to go more to the left of the jump.

    I remember this game! Gremlin did some great racers between the 80s and 90s, beginning with the Lotus Turbo Challenge series, moving on to Top Gear for Kemco and then some PC-only stuff like this.
    I don't think I ever actually played the full version back in the day, but I vaguely recall a demo on the cover of a magazine I got regularly. I recall the biggest criticism at the time being that the number on the speedo appeared to bear no resemblance whatsoever to the actual speed the cars were moving at! Probably for the best; handling something actually going 180mph would be nightmarish.

    • @TrollDecker
      @TrollDecker 6 років тому +2

      Technically, Gremlin only published the Lotus trilogy, with Magnetic Fields developing the games, same with Super Cars. AFAIK Gremlin's only contribution to Lotus beside pubbing it was getting Patrick Phelan to do the third game's music.

    Not quite in agreement with the "neither high grip or drift vehicle being better". Obviously the high grip ones fare better in maps with sharp, and frequent, turns. S - stretches, so to speak. Meanwhile the drifting cars tend to do better in longer turns. The drift allows for earlier turning and when controlled the nose can be mere inches away from the wall and thus, despite the drift and travel, it holds a much sharper turn. The highest grip cars tend to lose this "tightness" to the wall in long turns depending on how sharp it is. The Drift-car (Zizin) can nearly do a sharp U turn thanks to the early turning and drift. Not to mention.. the Zizin is the most fun car of the bunch.

As @Pixelmusement already wrote, being used to a certain car was the most important factor in being fast.

    Congrats on a very good review of a great game! You missed mentioning the great splitscreen option though!
    I got a pirated copy of this game before I got hold of a legitimate copy & I remember that the first trial of installing ended when the 12th of 13 or so 3.5 inch disks was unreadable which meant an hour or so was wasted.
    I fondly remember several sunday mornings playing this game in splitscreen against my sister, at first me on the Thrustmaster T2 wheel & she using the keyboard.
    You're right about analog input, it's a huge difference despite being "just an arcade racer", I broke all my previous records since I started using the steering wheel.
    I think the gas- and break-pedal axis were analog too though, but it's a long time ago I played the game with that setup.
    I disagree about the more driftier cars being of no advantage, since using analog input I was much faster with the most loose car on certain tracks despite it's topspeed being way below the fastest.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  6 років тому

      +armorgeddon Gas and brake are not scanned analog, just digital. You can assign them to analog inputs, but they will produce digital outputs. And yeah, missed the splitscreen mode, which is partly responsible for the default controls being weird.

    There's something else you didn't mention... If you destroy all the other cars on the track before they cross the finish line on their final lap, and then cross the finish line, you win. So I used to take the most durable car and just bull rush the other cars backwards to do as much damage as possible, killing everybody before they can cross the finish line with enough laps. Then I'd just complete one lap and win the race.

      I mean... I'm not surprised that tactic works, it just seems like more trouble than it would be worth given just how many racers you'd have to take out without getting destroyed yourself. :P

    I remember trying out the demos, and despite being a racing fan, it is one hard to get into the flow of, though I guess I've got an itch of wanting to give it another go for sure. Guess, it was the controls doing me in (just using the keyboard under DOSBox for sure)!

      +hellfire64 I literally played two laps of a race with the keyboard controls when I was starting out and was like, "This feels like it's supposed to be analog..." Switched to my PS4 controller and yeah, played WAY better following. ;)

      In Championships, Fatalities are probably where a small portion of your points are gonna come from, especially when using a high damage rate (or playing on Death). The real trick with them is to tailgate, which is part of the reason why the Global and Reise Wagon teams tend to be in the top spots on the score tables (high top speeds mean they can catch up and just keep nudging opponents, combine that with high mass and they can get kills against most other teams without taking loads of damage themselves). You get one point per Fatality that you cause (and another point if you happen to have the Fastest Lap in the race), on top of any points for placement.
      On short races and with low damage, there won't be enough Fatalities to really matter, but in longer races with higher damage, fatalities really stand out. Each racer gets three cars (not just you). The first two times a racer gets wrecked, its reported as a Fatality (with the player responsible for causing it noted, unless it was self-inflicted). The third time, however, it is reported as DESTROYED, they immediately get placed behind all still-living players, and they are out of the race. If all other racers have been DESTROYED, the last surviving racer automatically takes first and the announcer basically chastises EVERYONE, saying "YOU NEED MORE PRACTICE!" or "YOU'VE GOT TO TRY HARDER!" (these are the lines normally reserved for not being in the top 5)

      Exactly. Playing at death damage. You could destroy all of the other cars. Bonus tracks on impossible difficulty you could beat the race that way

    • @Christopher-N
      @Christopher-N 6 років тому +1

      Sorry, Kris. I'm afraid it was the game's skill level that made the reference: girlie, as in "little girlie-man." I'll let you try to guess the SNL sketch before I tell you which one.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  6 років тому +1

      +Christopher Noel ...that's... probably not what the game's devs intended themselves given that they were based outside of North America and it's more likely they were just trying to be 90s-edgey by using a term often associated with weakness. Or it's possible the term also has a similar UK pop-culture reference, but either way, it was already being outmoded back then and even in retrospect was a very dumb term to use in this manner. :P

    • @Christopher-N
      @Christopher-N 6 років тому +1

      I take it then, that you've guessed the _"Pumping Up with Hans & Franz"_ sketch. I think you're correct, that the reference was merely a coincidence. Taken within the context, I feel it's an appropriate name for a skill level, not quite on par with Rise of the Triad.

    In retrospect, I'm glad your sigh of disdain at "Girlie" didn't cause another Pickle Wars reaction.
    Gotta remember this game was made at a time when A) games were seen as meant for kids (preteen boys very much act sexist without understanding the implications and stuff like this plays up to that prepubescent mentality), and B) this was an age where everything was trying to be edgy and macho. Just look at Duke Nukem--the character would never work today but he fit in just fine in the 1990s. Also look at how games were advertised back then (I still remember Contra Hard Corps' meat grinder magazine ads).
    It's important to contextualize media with regard to when it came out, not hold it to modern standards. After all, the creators couldn't see the future.

      Klitzing Firstly, in the game itself, it basically translate that company to "Travel Wagon" which I believe is a throwback to the name "Station Wagon". Secondly, I've heard the word "reisen" before, which as far as Google Translate is telling me is a verb form of "reise", which I had not heard before, so my mind never made the connection between those two words. Thirdly, I'm pretty sure I've seen "reise" in at least a couple other games, which means if I ever see the word again in those games I'll have a stronger understanding of why the name is there! :)

    • @KeeperBvK2
      @KeeperBvK2 5 років тому

      @@Pixelmusement Actually, "reisen" (lower case r) is the standard verb form of "Reise", and "Reisen" (capital R) is the plural form of "Reise". So there is that as well. The German language can be so much fun...not ;)

    • @Tempora158
      @Tempora158 6 років тому +2

      That far away camera angle was Gemini's choice. There is a camera option that places the camera close behind the car like in Daytona USA, Ridge Racer and the other PC racing classic (IMO), Screamer. Given the amount of loops and jumps the tracks have, the best camera option in this game is the first person view so the camera doesn't switch view on you like at 12:21

    • @Pixelmusement

      +Tempora158 +Guitar
      Anthony I actually couldn't stand any of the camera modes in this game, so I opted for the one that I hated the least. The first person mode isn't good for situational awareness, which you kinda need for hitting opponents, and the other external camera ends up making your car take up nearly half the screen. :P

    • @KitsuneZeta
      @KitsuneZeta 6 років тому +1

      There is one first-person camera option that sticks a rear view mirror up on the top (in place of the time info), but that actually lags the game a bit (as does the First-Person w/Teammate view option). I've honestly stuck with the standard first-person view, occasionally bringing up the teammate view to see what they're up to (F3 and F4 are the swap view hotkeys), as I never could get the hang of using the third-person camera on upside-down track sections (which make up half of Bonus 4)
