I greatly appreciate this vlog in particular. The stories told here are important to spread and keep alive, and people like me that aren't from the US get the chance to hear these things.
I'm glad you were willing to show this discussion on your channel. It's a tough one, but an important one. I don't think anybody's proud of the tragic history of plantations, but it's interesting to me nonetheless.
I'm really happy I have a platform to share this information and have this discussion, especially for those who aren't familiar with the history.
She's an amazing speaker and storyteller!
StephenVlog: Come for the weird pizza videos, stay for the free video tours.
It felt like I was sitting there with you all during the entire tour. Props to the camera person who took time to film all that. ^w^
It's fascinating hearing the Gullah story about slavery, especially as someone who isn't American and therefore don't know much about their history back then.
I've been avoiding this vlog for a while; this kind of history tends to make me sad and emotional. I finally decided to watch it, and I'm glad I did. The history of the Gullah people is so interesting, and it's priceless to hear it from her. Thank you so much for this.
The part with the Gullah woman was so fascinating! As a non-American, I hadn't really learned much about that part of history, just general things. So learning some details was super interesting. Thank you for including it as part of your vlog!
There's something about the South that's so... intriguing to me. The history, the nature, the culture. I hope to travel there someday.
I really enjoy places like these. The ones that are so important to history. I love visiting these places and learning about them, whether good or bad. This is also why I like museums so much.
The lady talking about the slaves was really interesting to me. I think it'd be really cool go to see the plantation in person. So much history, good and bad.
Like most human history isn't it? During WW2 many Norwegians went to Sweden, which it's good that people accepted them. But something bad one don't hear much about is that when the Norwegian King asked if he could go to Sweden for safety, the Swedish King, the Norwegian Queen's brother, said no, so the Norwegian King had to go to England instead. So it's good regular people were accepted, but treating in-laws, and prevously friends, like that... is bad. Proves yet again that the people are sometimes better than their rulers I guess?
TeruteruBozusama Huh, interesting. I'm the perfect example of an american stereotype that is terrible at remembering world history, so I didn't know that.
+KittyLife I think most know that the nazis took over Norway during the war, but just a few know what the Swedish king did even within Norway and Sweden. It's probably because they didn't want a new war..! And Norwegians weren't all saints during the war. Some were nazis unfortunately, and others treated the women who had kids with the Germans terribly. Personally do I not think any of the countries involved or affected by the war can be outright called heroic nations. There were some heroic inviduals like the Germans who sent jews out to safety, Princess Alice of Greece, Sir Nicholas Winton, St. Maximilian Kolbe, Irena Sendler, and more.
TeruteruBozusama you might also take into account that not all nazi was evil, some joined for many reasons, and that the ones that fell in love with them was treated like shit like you kind of did in your comment, it was shades of grey not black and white
+bjam89 which is why I refer to the good ones by nationality and the bad ones as nazi. Seeing Germans post-WW2-lessons is outright painful sometimes as they look like they feel so guilty over what they ancestors did... It's not their fault... but now that genetic memories are proven to excist is it even understandable that it affects them so much. I... have quite weird ancestry. badass freedom fighters on my mothers side whom stole gunpowder from the nazis and destroyed it. On my father's mother's side however... her mother was one of the children of the Prussians that escaped to Germany when Prussia was destroyed (weird thinking about that it was not that long ago... suddenly a proud nation just... gone..! Not split like Yoguslavia but just gone!). When hatred rose after WW1 she ran to USA, there she was met with the anti-German wave and ran to Norway and fell in love. When the nazis came to Norway her husband revealed he only married her to get a German surname and he was a naziprick who never loved her, the kind she ran away from in the first place... poor lady...
I have to say that was brilliant. What an amazing story teller. I have to visit America so I can visit some time. Hauntingly beautiful.
Now I see why it took a few days to make the next vlog. Still the hype will build up for the move to the house vlog
Yeah, there was nearly 90 minutes of footage to this vlog day, so it's taken a bit (we've also been busy with house-related stuff). The next few vlogs are cake to create, comparatively. I suspect I'll have two more out tomorrow.
StephenVlog Awesome. Keep up the outstanding work Stephen!
my word, i didn't even notice the time, jeez. brb grabbing popcorn.
Colin Michael Hey, I love your profile pic! Big fan of XCX.
Nicktendo 1 Haha, yeah. Been a fan of the game ever since it came out myself.
This is so important to watch, she’s such a good spirit, and delivers it so well
I was really surprise when she started singing that chariot song. I had no idea it was that old or had that kind of history. I think I'm going to like that song even more now.
Kamakiri86 There's a good amount of older religious songs that have origins in coded language. It's kinda fascinating to learn the history of them.
about to sleep, sees Half an hour vlog. welp, gotta stay up
Thanks for showing this Stephen, was a great history lesson.
Normally, I don't enjoy learning things on a break, but this was a nice history lesson.
Me and my mom are going to boones hall next easter. I cannot wait. We have watched north and south and read many things. I have always been into the history of EVERYTHING even before I got into history course in high school. Will be a learning point for sure.
Very interesting. She was a very powerful speaker.
... love codenames. They have a picture version but I don't love it as much.
All I can say is THANK you!
After years of having to learn about slavery in history classes, for once, I wasn't horribly uncomfortable. Huzzah!
18:53 that was crazy to me because my parents are Jamaican n i understood what she said. It really hit home, it sounds like jamaican patois.
I thought Gullah Gallah Island was mostly fictional. Today I learn!
the world plantation makes me feel pain on the inside for my people
Trust me everyone's ppl went through crazy times. The good thing is that they are not suffering anymore.
Just last year, I read Uncle Tom's Cabin, and it is really interesting to see an actual person telling you what happened, compared to just reading it.
oh hey, the ending song is the opening to a fantastic anime called "baccano." It's basically Pulp Fiction if it was set in the 1930's and an anime. I highly recommend everyone to watch it.
Nice ending music, Baccano! is a good show.
Wow that place was so cool!
Gator is yummy. My husband says he likes to eat it because it makes him feel like he's on top of the food chain.
As someone from the city those corn fields are amazing! :O
nice vlog with a nice history lesson.
Subbed I'll be touring Boones hall next week!
OMFG STEFS SHIRT COOKIE CAT OML I LOVEEEEE IT
NO RESPECT FOR OUR LORD ....SAD👎
That was really interesting. I'm grateful to Jackie Michael for the history information that she shared. I think that it's truly a tragedy that people were treated so horribly. People tend to want to blame the Southern States and the homes. But that's where they are so wrong. It was PEOPLE that thought they had the right to treat other human beings so horribly not the Southern States. People not very good people but people who in my personal opinion were less than the ones they were holding as their captive slaves. We are all made in the image of God and no matter the color of our skin or the language that we speak, we are all children of GOD ALMIGHTY!! People would do themselves better to acknowledge that.....
Hey, look! A vlog was actually uploaded today! ;)
So much has entered my brain hole. I feel smartened.
My grandmother was a Boone. My line of Boones were United Empire Loyalists living in Rhode Island and were told to leave Rhode Island around the time of the War of Independence. The government confiscated their 600 acre farm. I don’t think they had any slaves. Three generations moved to New Brunswick Canada.
The line of all the Boone’s originally came to the colonies in the U.S. for a better life from Devonshire England in the 1600’s.
When they first came to the U.S. before they had their farm they had a house and their community was attacked by Indians and the house burned to the ground. They started over with the farm. It must have been disheartening having to leave their farm and start over once again. Maybe the government gave them some money for the farm but I doubt it since they were loyal to the Crown.
This may be just me, but the guide guy at Boone Hall kinda reminds me of Bob Ross (voice, the way he speaks) xD
Wow I innerstand
Gun N Roses... Fuck Yeah!! Baccano!!
Was that her entire speech or did you edit it? And was the audience standing the whole time?
you can see the guy in the front giving the lady a Standing O at the end of her speech, so im just gonna assume that everyone was sitting the entire time
The entire presentation was a bit longer, but I edited it down to keep the information fairly succinct, and keep the vlog under 30 minutes.
oh my god Mal is wearing a Desert Bus for Hope shirt! I didn't know you guys had heard of LoadingReadyRun.....The internet's a smaller place than I thought
Since there's no plantations of a similar nature I'm aware of in Ireland, this was a really interesting vlog for me. Also, what did you think of Codenames?
Wow this video was really interesting to me
This was a nice vlog
Wow that is a very southern accent. As a British person , that is what the "American stereotype would be" .
Mal with a Desert Bus shirt? Are you guys fans of Loading Ready Run?
Will Stephen Georg replace casey neistat?
It'll always be mount Royal to me.
Where was this located at? Stephen
Boone Hall Plantation is located near Charleston, SC.
this vlog was on my birthday
FantasySherlockHomles the upload or original date
Trevor Kovacs the original date
I think I'd want my money back if all I got was a lesson in "Pig Latin". Commenting at 19:23.
slave history is interesting to learn about
How much of the Gullah presentation reminded you of your college movie project?
There's definitely some similarities. Both are near Charleston (Oyotunji is about an hour south), and both originated from West Africa. But the Gullah people have been here for several hundred years, whereas the other tribe (Yoruba) was established in the area around 1970. The Gullah people were slaves, but the Oyotunji African Village was established purposefully. Many of the Gullah's traditions have been infused with southern heritage and culture, but the Yoruba are very distinctly West African.
I thought Stephen would have actually said something about it rather than just show the lady speak then ignore it
I mean, the inclusion of her presentation into the vlog is the exact opposite of 'ignoring' it. Jackie Mickel is a powerful speaker and did an incredible job-there was nothing left for me to say.
+StephenVlog I agree with that in some ways but not in all due to the fact that its not like she is voicg anything but giving a quick summarization of events in the past I fail to see that as discussion due to her lack of feeling un what she said it was almost as if it was just a daily chore if u understand what I mean stephen , dont get me wrong the inclusion of her was still very provocative in and of itself
What kind of discussion did you want
question, since she keep saying we, is she in character or a historical speaker? kind of tired and want to know the we context
I'm pretty sure she meant "we" the Gullah people, so out of those two options I guess hitorical speaker? Hope you got to have a nice rest.
Smile936 thanks i did and thanks for clarifying what she was meaning, when english is not your first language and you have a hard enough time understanding humans of your own culture she was somewhat confusing with her wes to me
Stephen I don't have a twitter or facebook but have fallout fan art, can I send it through instagram?
We only accept Fallout fanart through Twitter since it makes it much easier on us to track the hashtag.
Hahaha alright I'll try and make one. Sorry for the hassle. I hope you like the fan art! Have a superb day Stephen!
Fluffy the trex
It's pronounced PACON. It's French for little nut.Named by the French settlers in Louisiana. Where i am at. IT IS NOT PEEE CAAAN. Pronounce the French way because it's a French word. If you are a peee can person. YOU ARE WRONG. lol
