  • If you've been wondering how the top-end Mac Studio compares to the highest-end MacBook Pro, look no further, because we have a real-world usage comparison that doesn't rely solely on benchmarks. Benchmarks do not always paint the true picture of what's going on with each machine. The TLDR of all is that most people will be more than okay with the M1 Max but there are some time saving benefits to the M1 Ultra that do show up in "real world" tests.

    Thanks for a grounded, real-world Mac Studio assessment! … I went with the base model M1 Max Mac Studio and bumped up storage to 1 TB. I wanted a desktop solution to replace my i7 Mac mini, and I really, REALLY wanted a system that could offer butter-smooth video editing with several clips and effects. Dropped frames that prevent me from previewing a transition is beyond frustrating. I mulled the purchase decision for a day after the March event concluded, so I’m still waiting for it.

    Good vid. I have a “base computer” at work that my whole company revolves around, and that will be the Mac Studio, while my Macbook Pro is my out-of-office workhorse that I couldn’t do without. And I have an M1 Mac Mini as a backup machine for when the laptop is getting repaired, if that ever happens.

    Thanks for the video. The only upgrade that seems reasonable over the base Studio, is the 32 core GPU for another $200. Unless you absolutely need more RAM or Storage, just add the extra GPU cores and enjoy the faster processing/rendering power. Otherwise, There is plenty of fast RAM, and storage is large enough to install Apps and data. Because you can't upgrade the storage easily, it is better to keep important data and backups on external storage or NAS. I do believe the Studio in total is a modular system in a datacenter scenario; can't wait to see how people use it that way. Cheers everyone!!!

    This video is important, not just for what it says, but for what it does not say. Barely mentioned is the M1Pro MacBook Pro. Currently, Apple offers the M1Pro in a laptop form factor only. There are no M1Pro desktop machines. Apple caters to the consumer desktop market with M1-equipped Mac Mini and iMac. For the dedicated professional/industrial market, Apple offers M1Max- and M1Ultra-equipped Mac Studio. But the only "prosumer" space hardware with an M1Pro on board is the MacBook Pro. No desktop machines. That's quite a gaping hole in Apple's product lineup, no? Internet commentators and influencers tend to go chasing after the M1Ultra and wonder what a great "video studio" machine it would be, doing 4K, 5K, 6K or even 8K video projects with this expensive hardware. But what about those of us who might occasionally do 4K or 1080 video projects, along with some photos, desktop publishing, some CAD, PDF generating, and other general office productivity tasks? To that market, even the base M1Max might seem like overkill. So, where's the M1Pro desktop for the rest of us? There is none, and all of you internet personalities seem to miss that.

    @MacRumors - Thank you for posting this review. This is one of the best review I watched so far. One factor which I do not see on any of the reviews for MacBook Pro's is that under current scenario (where remote/hybrid work flow exist) is the internet connectivity. I know McBook pros do not have an ethernet port and needs to be connected through a ethernet-thunderbolt adapter, if I connect like this will it affect the internet speed? This question comes from assuming a situation where I have only one editing system, which is MacBook Pro.

    • @NhatLinhNguyen82
      @NhatLinhNguyen82 2 роки тому

      Thunderbolt is so much faster than any of Internet speed right now that the adapter should increase your internet speed not slow down (jk but seriously, nothing to worry rather then needing of extra stuff to carry)

    I have a question regarding using a MacBook Pro connected to a Sudio Display, for example, on a permanent basis. I'm concerned about the longevity of the MacBook Pro permanently connected to a power supply. I would definitely be leaning to getting the 14" MacBook Pro and connect it to a Studio display, rather than Mac Studio, except for my concern about longevity issues. I'd appreciate any advice.

    • @mpetrides
      @mpetrides 2 роки тому

      I had the same concern but I'm counting on battery optimization to protect the battery when the MBP is plugged into the Studio Display 24/7. Plus I bought AppleCare for both the MBP and the Studio Display. Here's hoping these two precautions suffice.

    • @justinavila1320
      @justinavila1320 2 роки тому

      I have the same concerns. However, I also think of the life of a computer. Many people are still using their 2015/2016 MBP let alone 2018/2019. In those years the MBP got heavily updated to today with the Pro and Max chips. Even 2015/16 - 2019 was a big jump. I don't know many people who could not use or had issues with their 2015/16 MPB. Even power users (perhaps except for the standard less battery life on battery power as time goes by - which seems to be the major issue - and is also replaceable by Apple - of course at cost). So I think the question is - With the MBP M-Pro and M-Max will it work as a desktop solution for 2-5 years? I think so. Will the battery life being amazing if its plugged in 24/7 after that time frame? No. BUT! I think in similar time frame you are going to see an advancement in tech that will blow away current offerings and/or at a cheaper price point to todays price vs performance and specs. Basically, I'd say this - if yo have ANY need for remote work with a screen the MBP is an excellent choice. If you had always using a desktop solution, then save a bit and go Studio. Both are going to give you similar performance (A first!!!) so I wouldn't go studio vs MBP on that basis. Lastly, it will take software developers at least 2 years from now to catch up with current hardware (and that is at an accerlated bace - which most R&D doesn't have the budget or need for). So in 2-5 years time the AMAZING tech you've spent $$$ will FINALLY be supported - and the question is - at that time what will be available? (Certainly the offerings of today will be found at a MUCHCCCH more affordable price point than todays pricing whether MPB or Studio

  • @KerrickLong

    What's really wild is that if you compare a 10CPU/32GPU M1 Max MacBook Pro and a Mac Studio with the same SoC, RAM, and Storage, the prices are only $1,100 apart. Add the Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad, and you're only left with $752 to pay for a display--and you can't get a display of the quality of the MBP's screen for that kind of money. The new Studio Display doesn't even meet that quality (let alone that price target)!
    Aside from the above differences, you're left with the Mac Studio having 4 instead of 3 TB4 ports, a 10Gb Ethernet jack, and two extra of each of USB-A and USB-C ports--with the MacBook Pro having a battery, webcam, and a microphone.

    Good comparison with useful, actionable information. Thanks. Also, is there a configuration you find to be best regarding pairing the MacBook Pro w/an external display in terms of scaling on the external display. I’ve tried connecting the 16” MBP Max w/a 27” 5K iMac using the new SharePlay feature but find that the MBP screen doesn’t translate to the iMac screen in a way that isn’t some trade off between screen content appearing too small but things have that retina screen resolution vs scaling it so content is large enough but resolution suffers greatly. That aside I’ve also noticed that even when connecting the two via Thunderbolt there’s still noticeable latency/smearing(?) when moving the mouse curser around the iMac screen which I find frustrating as addressing this issue so that it’s a non-issue for end users by enabling the sort of functionality/compatibility I’m sure we all are wanting seems to me to be reasonable/doable, and not allowing that (at least currently) seems more a decision to push users to purchase the studio display, etc, despite my 2020 27” iMac essentially being the same screen. Guess I just wish we had the “it just works” functionality/reliability of target display mode again, and if that was possible a decade ago I find it hard to believe it’s anything but a choice currently to limit it now. So my ranting aside I guess I’m just wondering what the best external display for the 16” MBP Max is (does Pro Display XDR) provide a 1:1 mirroring or extension of the MBP Liquid Retina XDR screen? Does any other monitor provide that ?) as well as any advice for optimizing the SharePlay to the 27” 5K iMac screen in terms of retaining the retina resolution while also having content on the screen appear at a reasonable size. Thanks for reading this far & again thanks for the review.

      I don’t think connecting them via Thunderbolt is even possible? In the sense as a native video connection. I believe it will always be a network aka compressed video stream, hence the lag. This used to be possible on older iMacs (target display mode), but not since the 5k I believe.
      Guess you’re better off buying a Studio Display 😉

After searching for any details I saw that Apple themselves made brief mention of using a wired connection to potentially achieve less latency, etc., so I connected the two computers with a Thunderbolt 3/4 cable and turned wifi off on the iMac to ensure if/when it showed up as a source for airplay, that it wasn't showing up via a wifi connection, but in my personal experience with both methods of connecting (wired and via wifi) the resolution as well as latency were noticeable. I am basically hammering at it with about as much abuse as one can. I am also running two 4k displays, and two 2k displays simultaneously. My only gripe is the restart process... I have to disconnect ALL peripherals before restarting, or the machine crashes with. some kind of video error. There is a lot of speculation and rumors that have been floating around about the Mac Studio most likely getting a performance enhancement in the next couple of month. Additionally, with the M1 Ultra still being super new, it's bound to run into some pretty major issues in the next year or so. Compound this with the fact that the Studio Display may end up being the next iMac in some capacity, not to mention the hazardous cord situation, there is plenty of reasons to wait for Apple to improve on these elements.
      Plus it would be nice if the "Apple Tax" on these things was cut in half as appose to the typical price gouging.
      The Macbook pro seems pretty solid, but that notch... That notch is just infuriating. I would honestly take the touch bar back to get rid of the notch.
      I prefer Mac computers and intend to invest for the next decade of my career with something stable, but right now these products feel like stand-ins for something better that is soon to come and all the early adopters will be mad when all their feedback is made a reality. It's kind of like with the Maschine Plus where a lot of people bought into the Maschine Mk3, and not even a few years later find out the M+ is coming.
      So those are my thoughts. Too much needs to be revised to make these reflect what customers want, and they're so close to making i happen. Cut the "Apple Tax" on the prices, at least for upgrades, and more people will be happy, and bank accounts too (yes I'm aware of the monthly payment plans, but no thanks).

    Since the product cycle is so long when it comes to any new Apple product feel that originally the Mac Studio was built, and designed with the Intel processor line in mind. That is why in any of the reviews where people are trying to cause the M series SOC's to throttle it just never happens. Would like someone to be able to have the CPU / GPU going full blast for a week, and record the temperature data.
    A few days with my new setup that replaced my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014). I now have a MacBook Air M1 chip with 8‑core CPU, 7‑core GPU, and 16‑core Neural Engine, 16GB unified memory, 2TB SSD storage, CalDigit TS4 Thunderbolt 4 Dock, and a LG Ultra HD 5K Ultra Slim 27MD5KA-B Monitor on a desk VESA arm. Only thing I have noticed via iStat Menus monitor program is that even with 16GB unified memory with the programs I normally leave open memory is still being swapped out to the SSD storage. This is the reason I purchased 2TB storage is that even with the read/write of swap memory the MacBook Air should last me a very long time.
    Love it when young people talk about the cost. Apple Mac Studio, Studio Monitor in my configuration would've cost me $4,198.00 which is less than my original Macintosh purchased in 1984 at $2,500 when adjusted for inflation would be $6,764.87 on the introduction date of the Apple Studio lineup.
    If I was still in the world of professional production I would have no problem spending the maximum of $7,999.00 on the Apple Mac Studio M1 Ultra with 20-core CPU, 64-core GPU, 32-core Neural Engine, 128GB unified memory, 8TB SSD storage. We use to rent lens for some of our equipment because the cost of purchase versus the limited times that we need to use them for production projects. Some lenses can be very expensive however if you need them all of the time you need to purchase them.
    Thing is as a normal just do not need all that Mac Studio power, and I live in the consumer desktop part of the grid.

    Those render times seem really slow.
    The videos that I create for my UA-cam channel (in 4K) are edited in Premiere Pro on a Windows PC. I'm used to render times about 15-20% of the duration of the timeline, if not faster -- a 40 minute video, for example, will render in about 9-10 minutes or less, even with multiple layers, color grading, scaling, After Effects lower thirds, etc. Simpler videos render even faster, even having to transcode the footage from ProRes to h.264.
    My computer is nice, but not overly impressive... a 3950X CPU with 2080 GPU. Good, but certainly far from top-of-the-line or state-of-the-art. And it cost a lot less than any Mac Studio M1 Ultra.
    If the render times mentioned in this video are typical, those aren't very impressive. Kind of embarrassingly slow for a machine that is advertised as being appropriate for video editing, honestly.

And then there is the battery.. it will loose performance from the day you start using it, and after 4 years of use Its just half the battery performance (if that much)

      @@macrumors it’s the best I’ve ever used. Premiere likes to crash and lose work. FCP crashes maybe once every month or two. Never lost any work though. When you learn the magnetic timeline going back to Premiere or Resolve is is just slow and tedious. You don’t “need” Resolve for color correction. You can do most of it in FCP and if you need a little more there’s Color Finale. I could keep going and I know everyone is different of course. Just IMHO.
      I’m convinced the main reason people don’t like FCP is because they’ve never had proper training on it. I’ve heard many say “I didn’t know it could do that” about something they would’ve learned in the first hour of a proper training program. 😎👍🏼

      @@bradbell4022 FCP IMHO but you need proper training to use it effectively. I like Ripple Training. Their FCP and Motion courses are well worth the cost if you’re serious about learning how to edit. They also have good stuff on UA-cam but an actual training course is a better place to start because it will take you sequentially through the use of the software. If you’re looking for free training there’s plenty on UA-cam but I can’t recommend most of it. The best IMHO is from Ripple or Izzy Video (even though Izzy training is getting old). Both of these sources of training are from people who use FCP/Motion in real world situations. Most of what other “training” I see (especially on YT) is not.
