This is one of the most amazing games. These guys don't have the expansions... Watch the 3 season spartacus series on netflix. game goes EXACTLY like the show. Its AMAZING!
Played a four player game three times now with the same group. The guy that always picks Tullius has won all three times now. The guy that always picks Glaber always seems to pile up a good bit of coin and finish somewhere in the middle as influence goes so I would have to disagree with the assessment of Glaber here. Not a terrible game but it is definitely capable of stirring up some conflict with your buddies if they are fairly competitive like myself lol. The last game we played, I definitely had in the bag as everyone at the table assumed until the gladiatorial combat for the round went completely sideways on me where the other inferior gladiator with no equipment actually beat my fully equipped superior gladiator. I rolled garbage and they rolled fantastically, so although combat is far from complex it is definitely an interesting, if not unforeseeable and somewhat frustrating at times, fun factor in the game.
It is one of my groups favorite games but i also think it needs the right group. I agree that we have talked about making the game shorter not by increasing what your starting influence is but decreasing the victory cap. Thankfully Gale Force Nine is reprinting this game but it will not use the movie stills for the cards.
I picked this up at gen-con, and have been enjoying it. My one complaint is that Spartacus' ability is almost unbeatable, if you don't have the doctore, Onimeyus, then Spartacus will run rampant and kill everyone's gladiators; his auto wound ability is unfair to say the least.
I'd suggest to play the game from 1 Influence, because starting from 4 or even 7 unbalances the game too much: - Slaves/Weapons are worth much less - You'll most likely never get a champion in a 4 p game - Glaber gets inbalanced (as Tom said), because Guards are much easier to get than Slaves/Gladiators Just to name a few..Take your time! The game took us (4 p) always close to 5h. But it's great fun, you'll learn from every playthough and it's nicely balanced. I'd recommend it to everyone! :)
When I play a 4p player game starting at 1 the longest point it gets to is 3 hours. I don't think there is any need to try speed the game up by decreasing the amount of influence needed to win
I noticed there is two different versions of this board game. One that doesn’t have the shows art and the other that does. I’m Assuming it’s the same game just not with exact show characters like the one you guys have. Are they any different Can anyone answer my question? I’m looking to get this game and try it out with my friends.
Thexolder one with shows art has ezpansions and is about a few times more expensive now. From what I understand base games are pretty much the same. Expansions to order one add morexplayer counts, though. May be wrong totslly i kbow nothing
I believe you cant trade cards until the market phase and you can never trade cards too persuade soemone to make a decision on an intrigue card or any other descion only gold can be traded freely like that....
So while 2 players are fighting this elaborate roll fest the other players just go get a coffee or something? Really, it doesn't seam to bad overall, but I will probably wait for an expansion to balance out the combat and the like. With say 3 fighters it would be easier to team up on the uber Spartacus or whoever is running around

This game is just really great!
I like the intro music.
you can always make some rulles to add more gladiators or traps or even moves
Looks really cool. Trying to find a release date for the UK ...does anyone know?

Expansions are planned and the ability to have multiple gladiators fight at the same time is in the works.

I like the music at the start of the video. If anyone knows what it is please post!

how do you do it,always eventually comes down to the same
They seem to have used the dice mechanics from Dwarf King's Hold for the attacking/damage lol.

House Batiatus the true heroes of Spartacus!
our 4 player game went for over 8 hours and we still didn't finish it. was a learning curve though
is there only 4 figures?!
If you have more movement dice you can attack and run away and they will not be able to attack you.
A videogame based on these rules would be amazing in multiplayer.
These licensed games always put me on guard. They typically have poor gameplay with a popular stamp on the cover...

There are items that gladiators can use.
I was jaded, too, but it's not actually that bad..
Seems like an interesting game, but that combat system looks like it can become drawn out
I am Spartacus...
This game only got 1 thumb up from each of them and yet coolstuffinc has it as Dice Tower award nomine for best game of 2012?

If you take a damage, you lose a die, take more than one, you lose more. Give it 3 turns the combat is over.
Decapitation? Merely a flesh wound!
:P
It IS rated too high -- but I think it is because you are buying and selling slaves during each round.
This review fails to explain combat, unfortunate.
