Electronic E- Z Spin Motor

  • This is a homemade electric motor based on Lasersaber's 'EZ Spin Motor' designs. I was able to configure a simple electronic firing circuit that worked with the coil and rotor arrangement. The rotor magnets are NNNN out facing. The coils are NSNSNSNS.

    That is a very nice replication. If you like watching it run for hours on a Super Cap just wait until you build one that runs for hours on an electrolytic capacitor. Check your messages, I have something I want to send you.

    I saw lasersaber's EZ Spin Motor video about 6 months ago. It's pretty cool because of his 3D printed form.
    I like your dual transistor version too. I think that's a good variation of his setup.

      Thanks. He has built a number of versions and you can download the print files at his web site. He listed a couple of places where you can have the motor printed if you don't have a 3D printer but someone mentioned that it is rather expensive. The required sapphire bearings are not cheap either so I decided to build a poor man's version. It worked good enough to find out what I wanted to know and was fun to build.

      I saw his files & parts list for the sapphires. I agree--it is quite expensive.
      The amount of torque that he got was quite impressive too--all things considered.

      Thanks. If I use the reed switch and a small electrolytic capacitor---- this will run on a potato battery.

      GrandadIsAnOldMan I used a small battery powered drill to wind the coils. A 2" piece of wood dowel with tape on it served as the holder for the sewing machine bobbin. I just let the spool of wire run between my feet as I sat and wound the coils. Each coil only takes about 5 minutes to build once you get going. The real time consuming part was mounting the coils and soldering them up right. I used a compass to make sure the polarity was right.

    1:49 It is actually good that the resistance of your circuit is lower than Lasersabers. That means there are smaller losses and smaller voltage drops across the coils, and more current can flow to create magnetic fields. (in other words less resistance is good)
    However, transistors, with their 0.6V cut-in voltage not a good thing when trying to power the circuit with really low voltages.
    In order to make your circuit perform better, you can increase the inductance by adding more windings, (which will increase the number of times current will loop around and add to the magnetic field) increasing the tolerances between the rotor and the coils (I guess that is why lasersaber decided to see what levels of precision he can accomplish with 3D printers) or by adjusting the timing used by the circuit, and by adding positive feedback and hysteresis so that the transistors stay in either the saturated region, or completely off so they dissipate (waste) as little power as possible. (to do this, you may want to try to use a comparator with ultra high gains and use a little positive feedback to add hysteresis.)

      I do agree on using a smaller gap. That makes a huge difference. If you are making a motor of this size with the end goal of running on less than 10uA or even under 1uA than using coil resistance makes a lot of sense to me. Rather than putting a resistor in line before the coils I prefer the resistance that is a natural part of creating the magnetic field in the first place.

      lasersaber I also agree. Just putting a resistor in the circuit to lower the current draw isn't the same thing. It does kinda depend on what the goal of the motor is though.

      Although from a purely electrical standpoint, the resistance in the wire should have the same effect is the same resistance was external. (like with an actual resistor in series) Say you had 40 AWG wire wound around a spool 100 times and it had a resistance of 1K. That will have the exact same electrical effects if you were to have 22AWG wire with the same number of windings, and then added enough resistance so that the total resistance is also 1K. The 2 coils should perform identically, although I am not sure.
      I think the reason the difference exists is because when you use thinner gauge wire, you can squeeze more wire onto the spools, and with physically many more turns, the higher inductance and stronger magnetic fields will be produced for the given current.
      I think if you could practically make the coils in these motors with as many turns as possible while doing everything to make the resistance itself as low as possible, and increase the magnetic flux going towards the magnets on the stator, you'll increase efficiency. But when you have really low resistance wires, you need really short pulses to drive the coils so that the inductance of the wire will limit the current, without losses.
      So I guess under strictly practical cases, more wire is better, even if the resistive losses are higher, simply because the additional magnetic field gained by using more thin wire outweighs the disadvantages.

      ***** If you can get a low voltage high value capacitor (like the small SMD tantalum or multi-layer capacitors) and keep the pulses that drive the motor as short as possible, I bet you can really extend the time the circuit can operate!

    You should combine that with your static pill bottle generator and see if you can do a bit of charging or work with it.

    Cool looking build.
    Dancing Flower coils are ~500ohm and it might be worthwhile trying those ?!
    Been looking at reed motors here and somehow harvesting energy back around (similar to where you have the LED). Am using a DF coil. 5.5V 1F supercap to approx 3V with a 9V battery (5 seconds fill up) has it running for 1 1/2hr so far and yes indeed, I too sat there just watching it :) But 8 of those makes me wonder !

      Eight of those 500 ohm coils around a rotor would be amazing. Wiring them all up would take great patience though. The motor would probably run on one of the Dancing Flower solar panels and just ambient room light.

      Those backspikes from your motor would likely charge a battery/cap far higher than ambient solar...this could all get very practical and make a nice always running table display !
      (the box type generator we've all imagined being a free energy solution. A 4ever circuit keeping it going overnight, always charging + available output energy avail as and when needed for small devices, for free)

      slider2732"... a nice always running table display!" THAT has been my goal for years. It sounds sooo simple but the reality of getting the job done using only ambient indoor room energy is hard. Yon need an extremely efficient motor and a way to gather the ambient energy to reliably run it 24/7. That isn't easy. Lasersaber's 1 micoramp 3D printed motor is a giant step in the right direction.

      Indeed, the 1uA ability is so cool. All i'm thinking, is a blocking osc scavenge route and instead of running an LED, it can output to one of these. Output goes to a diode/1N4148 FWBR, on to a small cap and then to the motor circuit :)
      Got 4x DF coils and will make a 2 magnet rotor + use your circuit (with credit given of course if result has a video). This sort of thing has similarly bugged me for years, has to be possible !

      The motor will not run if you just add more magnets. If you put eight magnets on the rotor you would have to add a whole bunch more coils to keep the arrangement right and there isn't enough room (on this setup). If you rewire the coils to all one pole out facing you end up with a conventional pulse motor setup. Been there done that.

      +Rocky Rocky I understand your question but this is just a hobby for me. These little projects are just fun to build and I usually learn something new along the way. Maybe you could call that a purpose.
