@@Pigeonmaniacom I would be very interested to see longer versions. Falcon pretending to leave and then back on attack mode! I already knew that your homing pigeons are real athletes but I didn’t know that the damn falcon has so much stamina! @@tomwallhead6950 , I don't let the main racing team fly outside in winter when these attacks are very intense. The pigeons in the video are a separate team, a free range stock loft and I never race them at the club but they are bred from the best racers. Yes, I let the natural selection shape this team: falcons and also no medication ever. In spring-summer I breed from them, some youngsters refill the empty slots from falcon losses in this team and others go in the main racing team to mix back with the racers for a resistance boost. But I'm not doing it especially for racing, I like to experiment and try to create an agile line.

A few hawk attacks, will post later. This is why it was an easier winter, with double attacks when hawks attack down after the pigeons escape from the falcon, that really sucks.
Do all the towers around the world have falcons on them now...!!! and I thought I'm the unlucky one. Looks like falcons did their homework. There were so many close calls and nail biting moments. My mouth was agape the whole time. I think Ms. Ambition lost some tail feathers before she crash landed into that tree. She's fine??? It was an intense battle, but with your birds I knew I would be able to show the falcons UP in the end, if you know what I mean🤭 Thank you man, for this amazing video.
I don't lose many during the warm months because all the fanciers have their pigeons flying so there's a lot of prey. I lose some during the winter when most fanciers lock their pigeons and the local falcon pairs focus on my pigeons. That's when I film these attacks. I think the most I lost were about 30 from 70+ in a winter, but the smaller the flock the better for the pigeons. The best year was with 10 lost from 40.
@@Pigeonmaniacom Thank you very much for your fast reply. I keep high-flyers and racing pigeons. Since ten years I selected the high-flyers for falcon resistance with satisfying results. My racing homers on the other hand are by far not so resistant like your top birds and I loose many of them. Your homers seem to be more smaller like the average homers. They are more agile and have a faster reaction. Thanks again and good luck for the coming winter season.
@@CuMulusDancerZ You are right, they are smaller than the average homers. Also I try to select for silky feathers that you can barely hear when they fly. I always liked them small instinctively I guess, so I try to only introduce small pigeons in the gene pool. These are generally marathon pigeons - they are also more calm which is important during attacks. They are also lightweight by genetics but I get them even more light by feeding, some of them being about 300+ grams while a locked pigeon also heavy by genetics can be 600+ grams. That is an enormous difference in the fight with the peregrine. I also feed them only after the flight, those 20-25 grams in the crop also matter. They are more like your high flyers, I estimate they are about 300 grams too (?) I can guess that by the fast change in direction in their style of flying.
@@Pigeonmaniacom Yes, you guessed absolutely right. 300 grams is the target weight for my high flyers. Males weigh a little more, females a little less. My role model are rock pigeons that have been subject to natural selection for centuries. If the pigeons are too light, they cannot build up speed. If they are too heavy, they are not agile enough. However, besides body weight, there are other parameters that I select: Short arm wings, very high reaction speed, silky plumage, very close kit flying, best vitality, etc. Health and nutrition are also extremely important. It is important that the overall package is right so that the pigeons emerge victorious in the race for life and death against the peregrine. In your case, you reached the same goal but with an other breed. That´s interresting. Racing pigeons weighing 300 grams are very light and comparable to feral pigeons. My racing pigeons (training weight with an empty crop) weigh an average of 490 grams. They are like a board in the air and cannot fly quick maneuvers. That's why I lose so many and you don't.
@@CuMulusDancerZ Seeing this late. Yes, 300 g is not common for racers, that's what I measured in a few of the smallest females during mid winter when the falcon races were intense and I was feeding them very little. If they are also the silky feather type, they are so silent in flight that you see them flying from the floor to the top perch at the ceiling vertically and don't hear anything. Like a ghost. I love that, the falcon doesn't. If the weather is really bad and I can't release them for a week or more I reduce the food even more or they get fat and become easy prey. Wasting muscles and reflexes plus getting fat - recipe for disaster with a hungry slim striking fast falcon. While I try to breed smaller racers, feeding them less than they would normally eat also helps with the falcon. "Like a board in the air" - you described perfectly the racers I bought from an open field area with no mountains & forests and no predation. They are also very tall pigeons. I always liked pigeons with short legs, the rings/bands almost touching the belly, but some racers I see are like giraffes. I also noticed the shorty ones survive better. I was surprised after reading some research with falcons, it looks like the longer the legs the more chances the pigeons won't survive falcons. It's not like it gets them by the legs, but somehow the entire system is less agile. I love rock pigeons too, I'd love to see some documentaries about them or see them in real life but unfortunately they are not a popular species - I am really tired of the hundreds of documentaries they make about lions and crocodiles.
More depurative when not flying much or locked in the loft for days, more protein with heavy training. Also depends on temperature a lot, but about 25 grams per day.
