Falcon Race Arrivals

  • I miss the race arrivals during the off-season but the falcon takes care of this. It chases the pigeons up there breaking the flock into pieces. Then they drop down one by one or in small groups, like they would arrive from races. There is always tension counting them and sometimes identifying the ones that didn't make it.

    I love watching this again and again, the owner of these pigeons has no fear when he loses a few, it's probably survival of fittest.
    Also I love the victory lap that these pigeons do when landing.... They are absolutely fantastic birds having to deal with the hawks every day...

    Aww, man! You've entered so fast in our lives with this video. Not that we don't like it. 🤭
    It amazes me how fast they can go, both the hawk and the pigeons. It's like you draw a line from point A to point B, and they can fly the distance as you draw it.🙈
    So nice to see this video. And the old ones.
    And i can bet the pending ones will be as good as these.
    Thank you, Andrei, and thank your soldiers! 🙏

      Unfortunately from a pigeon racers view this is not the case. Hawks often get the best. I lost two very good ones this year to coopers hawks. Coopers aren't honest hunters like falcons shown in this video. They tend to get the pigeons by stealth not by out flying them. It is almost impossible for most hawks to catch pigeons in full flock flight.

      Most of the time it's best not to split but sometimes with the falcon, after long "marathon" attacks very high in the sky, it's better to split especially if this is done with a strategy. I've seen a lot of attacks where the falcon kept chasing the flock even if a lot of pigeons were "exploding" out of the flock.

    We see that you love the attacks of birds of prey. It is a pity that the hawk in your area did not open up completely, to the maximum of its capabilities. An adult Goshawk shows a very beautiful chase. Especially when it chases its prey from a height, repeating the tricks of a pigeon, the Falcon is not capable of this.

    • @Pigeonmaniacom
      @Pigeonmaniacom  3 роки тому +4

      It depends on pigeons - what kind of breed do you mean? On healthy racing pigeons in form, hawks always give up quickly if they sense they have no chance. I've been watching this for over 20 years. They do chase them a lot if they feel they can get them, sometimes I've seen them chasing the target over 2 minutes. This happens on racers that are either sick, too fat, not in form, or too young, weak or tired. Of course I would film hawks chasing but they never do, because they either catch the sick pigeons immediately behind the trees and there is nothing to film or they just give up quickly if they feel they have no chance. On the other hand the falcon chases sometimes successfully even perfectly fit pigeons. You can see in this slow motion zoom at 4:07 how fast they react to the change of direction or the tricks the pigeons try to escape. This was an experienced female but she was moulting late and this slows her down... she had a hard time escaping.

    • @Dimarik73rus
      @Dimarik73rus 3 роки тому

      @@Pigeonmaniacom Wild, only wild pigeons living next to people. Our pigeons from the dovecote will never be able to react and run away from the birds of prey like their wild brothers. From about 1993 to 2005, I watched almost every winter day as a goshawk attacking wild blue pigeons. I saw a goshawk driving flocks of pigeons up to 500 meters high. Yes, in the pursuit itself, the hawk pursues no more than 30-50 seconds, rarely more than a minute. But he did not immediately catch these pigeons, out of 10 attacks 3-4 were successful. The hawk could attack the pigeons all winter day until the hawk caught. These wild pigeons lived in the attics of human buildings and in factories, it got to the point that the hawk flew into the buildings themselves for pigeons, was so hungry. The falcon has just begun to settle with us, but it still flies away for the winter, because the falcon cannot hunt local wild pigeons as successfully as the Goshawk.

    • @Pigeonmaniacom
      @Pigeonmaniacom  3 роки тому +3

      @@Dimarik73rus Yes, the falcon has a hard time hunting wild pigeons because they rarely go very high in the sky like it wants. However, I've seen some documentaries of it hunting between the buildings (in New York I think). Also here, it caught some pigeons really low at ground level. Most domestic pigeon breeds are inferior to their wild ancestors in terms of agility and survival instincts because people selected them for beauty and other things. But racing pigeons are different, this is why I love them so much - they are the only breed that people made even better than their wild ancestors through selection. The selection of racing pigeons in races doesn't lose the agility like in other breeds but makes it even better. They have to fly over 1000 Km to get home in some races, this means they travel through hundreds of birds of prey territories, they survive hundreds of attacks - all these while being tired, hungry, thirsty sometimes and mentally stressed. Only the best survive and breed. They also get mixed with hundreds of birds from other lofts in heat & overcrowded conditions and they drink from the same water for a few days in the race car, and so fanciers also selected a very strong immunity, I could say better than in the wild relatives.

    • @Dimarik73rus
      @Dimarik73rus 3 роки тому +1

      @@Pigeonmaniacom Wow, great, Google Translate translated your message perfectly, I understood every sentence! Wild pigeons, flying 20-30 km every morning for feeding, rarely rise above 200-300 meters. But this height is enough for eagles to attack pigeons, not to mention a falcon, it is much more maneuverable than small eagles. It's not about flight altitude. In autumn, many victims of the hawk fly away for the winter. And they stay for the winter - wild pigeons and jackdaws. Among these pigeons, the hawk selects weak, late chicks until November-December. From December to March, the pigeons feeding the hawks remain in excellent physical shape. It is more difficult for a falcon to catch such pigeons, regardless of flight altitude, even on a clean, empty field, without a single tree - it is more difficult for a falcon to catch a pigeon than for a hawk. About pigeon breeds. Natural selection, attacks of dozens of different predators make wild pigeons ideal. Wild pigeons do not need to circle in the sky for 10 hours, as pedigrees do, or fly long distances, as sports pigeons do. In any case, wild pigeons remain strong. Already in childhood, their actions against a predator are much better and more competent than that of domestic pigeons. These skills wild pigeons receive from wild parents, and they are transmitted by genes. We are also engaged in sports birds in Russia. And we lose a lot of nesting birds, and they are nailed to the wild, live with them in attics, and fly with the wildlife to feed in the fields, walk to granaries. Whether it is a high-flying pigeon breed or an athletic one. However, in winter they cannot withstand the attacks of goshaws. The hawk is the first to knock them out of the flock of wild pigeons.

    Dar când vine dintr-un zbor greu epuizat ce pradă ușoară pentru un asemenea pradator, care-l așteaptă odihnit prada, nu am putut filma cum urmarea un porumbel obosit și-l ataca de multe ori pînă la urmă la capturat....deacea se pierd mulți,

      Tocmai de aceea sunt de apreciat porumbeii care realizeaza palmares pe mai multi ani.

      @@Pigeonmaniacom foarte rari sunt cu palmaresul pe mai mulți ani, mai ales dacă se raportează la numărul de porumbei participanți, sunt extrem de rari cu palmaresul. Ca să realizeze palmaresul trebuie gândit câți porumbei au ajuns hrana pradatorilor a soimilor ca să ajungă câțiva cu palmaresul. Din10 în 10 km.sunt atacați pe tot traseul de zbor,de mai mulți rapitori, scapă acei porumbei care au traseul liber când soimi consumă porumbei prinși de pe culoarul de zbor ... asta-i realitatea .

      Сапсан здесь вообще огонь. В других видео он до земли рубит птицу. Да и тетеревятник не плох, но хотелось бы видеть его более агрессивные атаки, которые он умеет делать.
