Hi Donald: Thank you so much for your message and for visiting our channel, I'm glad you enjoyed our recipe. These are so good and easy to make. :) Bonita
Thanks for this video. It is very easy to follow...I'm wondering what the main difference was between using pork fat or not? Besides taste was there a difference in texture?
Hi Keith: Thank you for you message and for visiting my channel, there is no difference in the texture or taste of the molasses buns. Years ago fat pork buns was a big thing in homes in Newfoundland, our elders would make these all the time and have in a cookie jar for you to eat as a snack. Fat pork gives it a different taste but its not going to make the tea bun better. So give them a try with or without the fat pork and let me know. :) Bonita
They used fat pork when I was a kid , just because we had no butter or any other means of fat .. simple as that we were to poor .. I hated biting into that pieces of fat pork in those buns especially in the tea biscuits ...
Yes for sure, years ago our elders would use lard and that is just a shortening. For sure use nutmeg and you can leave out the ginger.....Thank you for stopping by and enjoy to the fullest. :) Bonita
Garland Best Thank you for your message and question, this recipe I'm going to give you is for tea buns all you would need to do is just add 1/2 cup chopped fat pork and bake the same way 10-15 minutes. The only difference is its called a different name, thank you once again and have a wonderful day. Bonita ua-cam.com/video/hepCpwFPcjs/v-deo.html
Thank you for your message and for stopping by..you can leave the butter out and replace with the fat pork oil. Of course you will get extra fat by frying the fat pork first and use the small pieces of fried pork and half cup of the room temp oil in the recipe. These are so lovely and these fat pork buns are not for everyone you need to have a taste for them. We grow up having them and enjoyed every taste. We post a NEW recipe every Sunday if you wish to stop back. Bonita

Hi Evelyn: Thank you for your message and for visiting our channel, years ago the elders used whatever they had on hand. Today we got to look at the healthy side of baking and use something with less saturated fats, if you wish to use it I'm sure it would turn out but I won't recommend it. Butter is your better choice and margarine would be the next, I hope that helps and enjoy these delicious little molasses tea buns. Bonita

STEAMED MOLASSES PUDDING
INGREDIENTS:
1 EGG
3/4 CUP MOLASSES
1/2 CUP WATER
1 1/2 CUPS FLOUR less 1/4 cup for raisins
1 CUP RAISINS OR CURRANTS
2 TBSP OIL
1 TSP BAKING SODA
1/2 TSP SALT
METHOD:
Beat egg and add molasses, then dissolve baking soda in water and stir into mixture.
Stuff together flour and salt, fold into mixture.
In a small bowl add raisins or currants, and toss in 1/4 cup flour, this will help keep them from sinking to the bottom while steaming.
Fold the raisins into mixture, then add oil, continue mixing until combine.
Grease a pudding mold or mold of choice, pour batter into mold and cover.
Place in a boiler with 1/4 of water, start to boil and add pudding mold inside. Let steam for 1 1/2 hours then remove and serve with a hot sauce and thick cream, or jigs dinner with gravy.
WHITE CREAM SAUCE:
-2 tbsp butter to margarine -1/2 cup warm water 1/8 tsp nutmeg Orange Zest
-1/2 cup milk - 1/2 tsp almond extract lemon zest
1/3 cup white sugar - 2 tbsp flour or corn starch with 1/4 cup cold water ( mix in mason jar )
In a small saucepan add butter, milk, water and sugar let warm and stir occasionally.
In a mason jar add flour and cold water, shack together until no lumps seen.
Slowly mix in with saucepan hot mixture, until it starts to go thick. Remove from heat add almond extract continue stirring. Cover put to the side for pouring over molasses pudding, while hot.
