The Vikings is a great movie!
As far as Errol Flynn goes, if Robin Hood, The Sea Hawk, or Captain Blood is on TV, I’m going to watch it.

I'm pretty sure I have the Jack Cardiff book somewhere in my pile but that MM cover does not look familiar. Enjoyed your review of it. What an amazing career! Also I remember enjoying all of those Eric Red written films from the 80s, my favorite by far being Near Dark, which is in my top tier of vampire related films. I only noticed recently that he was writing Westerns while trying to find some of those Fargo books you promoted a while back. I don't blame you for dropping out given the details, but it was funny to hear you talk about it. Red has had some serious personal issues since his success as a screenwriter, so it's nice to know he's still writing and one hopes not all his novels are as annoying plot-wise as this one. On a side note: I've been to one too many used bookstores in my area (Chicago) where they look at you funny if you ask where the Western section is. Pretty f'annoying. I remember some asshat critic (years ago) writing in a major weekly magazine that (paraphrasing) in Hell all the all books in the library were written by Louis L'Amour. I love Westerns and the pulpier the better. But I can enjoy 'literature' too. Just finished reading The Cat's Table, by the guy that wrote The English Patient and thought it was great.

The local tv station, for some reason, showed The Vikings every hear over the Thanksgiving weekend for the Saturday afternoon movie. For me, it was a beloved part of the tradition.

If you had a beautiful woman whose reason for being in charge of that outfit could make sense given women's status at the time (like her dad was the leader and she was his tomboy daughter raised doing this and he died and she's taken charge because she understands it better than anybody) and the story actually faced the dangers of being a woman doing that (i.e. horny, rapey employees), I could buy it.
