Well I'm a newbie and I love Kooleen. Yeah, her sarcasm, jokes, a bit of humiliating her comunity and herself but I'm strong enough to not to take it seiously. I like her way of explaining things, she doesn't claim to be a professional artist though, she's like your classmate who is a way better in drawing but has no idea about learning it properly. So am I. I've got a lot of hints from her and it perfectly fits for my level. And last but not least she gives me an energy to take a pencil and try!

Kooleen was right about the “dont listen to your friends” tip, because some classmates in 2021 said my art was good, but it fr sucked… like sis’ brain did not exist in the drawing yet they said “its really good”. Kooleen is right cuz people don’t wanna upset you. Now my art improved from using references and in 2021 i barely used references. Edit: you shouldn’t be rude either, just tell the person “hey, is it okay if i can give you tips to improve at art?” instead of “oh u suck u shld quit” because constructive criticism is more effective and encourages the artist.
That's why I watch her videos, it's just that people in internet are sometimes just be honest with your art more than your friends, that's something I need to improve my art

Also, asking for pointers is probably better than asking if something "looks good" since while ppl will usually say it looks good, they might also be able to provide some helpful constructive criticism

my jaw dropped when i saw this video because i regularly watch both colleen and sam haha, i see sam as more of a playful mentor while kooleen is kinda like the relatable artist we are on the inside but don't want to admit it out loud (the art cheats/rule of thumb tips/liking clout) so having both artists to watch on youtube is amazing (and both artists are also extremely talented)

i really wish i had artists like you guys back when i was still an "art baby." i would've been able to go so much further with my artwork had i been given actual good tips and advice that for once didn't discourage nor scare me. there were so many things that i felt i wasn't allowed to do, such as viewing references or taking inspiration from other artist's and its what hurt my older work. but i have you now and its helped me tremendously so thank you!!
I like how you give advice and how you’re able to explain other people’s ideas in more detail so that we get a more accurate advice and actually understand the tips. And I do feel like it’s wrong for people to just give tips and advice without proper, further or logical explanation because if an artist is just starting off they won’t understand and be able to interpret what they’re saying.

To be serious for a second, it's not enough to just draw conventionally attractive people, you should draw attractive people from as many cultures and backgrounds as you can, or you'll get used to very specific types of proportions and then all of your drawings will look the same even if the characters are supposed to be extremely different.

I do think it's still important to practice tho, because knowing how to draw different face shape won't hurt. Art is a hobby first and a skill second, if you're someone who only draws for fun and isn't looking to improve then that's great too.

I actually prefer drawing old ugly people with ridiculous proportions, because perfect people are boring to draw. For me at least. Draw what YOU like and grow in YOUR way. As long as you are not making hateful or illegal art, Go ahead.

Kooleen was the first artist who didn't give me the impression that she wanted to appear as if she had stepped out of some idealistic fairy tale. I'm not an artist, just a guy who got a wacom for his birthday, I don't enjoy drawing (most of the time), it's tiring and frustrating, but I like to look at my finished drawings and see what random people on the internet think of it. Kooleen made me see that, although it is not my "vocation", I have the right to draw.

it's okay honestly , different people have different methods they get better at. Art is very broad and not everyone can learn from sam farts nor koolaid. We may learn from 100 artists but only a few we could actually follow
With the "your friends lie to you about your art" I kinda agree and I kinda disagree. If someone has a lot of artist friends and they're just starting, they need encouragement. They need to feel like they're moving forward and accomplishing something, not just hear critique all the time. So while critique does have a place, it's also about reading the room and seeing if someone wants it or if they'd just be discouraged by it. So when a baby artists asks if I like their art, I pick out certain things I do like and just don't mention the things I take issue with bc they asked if I *liked* it, not if it was good. especially with nailing forms, it takes a long time to learn proportions and how to do finer details like hands and facial features, and I'd rather not put them down for something they haven't had time to improve on yet. If they ask for crit, I give it to them in a very kind way that is both encouraging and gentle so they don't feel stupid for not doing something that I've been refining over ten years. People really like how I critique and I think it's helped them a lot. Tldr, don't give unsolicited advice, and when people are open to critique don't make them feel stupid. Though it's very fair that non artists don't know what they're talking about and will 100% lie to u. Get experienced artist to do critique

I like how you give advice and how you’re able to explain other people’s ideas in more detail so that we get a more accurate advice and actually understand the tips.
And I do feel like it’s wrong for people to just give tips and advice without proper, further or logical explanation because if an artist is just starting off they won’t understand and be able to interpret what they’re saying.
Sams emotions are all over the place that I can’t tell if he is being serious or sarcastic. Both of you are amazing :)

To be serious for a second, it's not enough to just draw conventionally attractive people, you should draw attractive people from as many cultures and backgrounds as you can, or you'll get used to very specific types of proportions and then all of your drawings will look the same even if the characters are supposed to be extremely different.
And that's what a lot of artists need to hear. They have amazing art, but all of their characters look EXACTLY the same and it gets boring...
@@cherrypi2322 that's not 100% what I meant, I meant that if you don't practice drawing people from different ethnicities then when you do try to draw them they won't look like their ethnicity. like lets way you only draw hot Korean people like Koleen does in her videos, the next time you'll try to draw idk a hot European person they'll end up looking Korean, because your hands are used to drawing Korean face shapes.

I have for now a certain style, because I draw on my phone with fingers and it's so tidious. Yes, round face, round eyes, they look pretty much the same, because it's simple. Yeah, I want to improve, but I just physicly can't with my fingers
@@farnregen I don't think there's anything wrong with not wanting to learn different face shapes, it was just a tip on how to improve your art skills. I do think it's still important to practice tho, because knowing how to draw different face shape won't hurt.
Art is a hobby first and a skill second, if you're someone who only draws for fun and isn't looking to improve then that's great too.
Basically it's because Kooleen prolly does art what she likes (or loves lol) and it's just basically just hot ppl. It caughts her eye, your eye, and as well as mine. I'm sure she could possibly draw more than that or anything else but she's doing it for fun. She said she'll continue art but her planned career is in the medical field.
Anyone can argue her ways and techniques may not be the best but it's just how she does it. She's sharing her skills and if you like what she does, then go follow her. Shes kool

I might be late, but once, one of my friends asked me if I could draw them. I said "I dont draw ugly people" for fun. And she said "Ohhh. That's why you dont have any self portrait" and then we laughed about it. Best response ever.
The thing I like the most about Kooleen is her personality like you wont get bored on any of her videos and she makes straight to the point tutorial that are very easy to understand

Kooleen was the first artist who didn't give me the impression that she wanted to appear as if she had stepped out of some idealistic fairy tale.
I'm not an artist, just a guy who got a wacom for his birthday, I don't enjoy drawing (most of the time), it's tiring and frustrating, but I like to look at my finished drawings and see what random people on the internet think of it.
Kooleen made me see that, although it is not my "vocation", I have the right to draw.

it's okay honestly , different people have different methods they get better at. Art is very broad and not everyone can learn from sam farts nor koolaid. We may learn from 100 artists but only a few we could actually follow
Sam really felt like a teacher who teaches you art while Kooleen felt like a friend who's better at you in drawing then just teacher you her ways.

With the "your friends lie to you about your art" I kinda agree and I kinda disagree. If someone has a lot of artist friends and they're just starting, they need encouragement. They need to feel like they're moving forward and accomplishing something, not just hear critique all the time. So while critique does have a place, it's also about reading the room and seeing if someone wants it or if they'd just be discouraged by it. So when a baby artists asks if I like their art, I pick out certain things I do like and just don't mention the things I take issue with bc they asked if I *liked* it, not if it was good. especially with nailing forms, it takes a long time to learn proportions and how to do finer details like hands and facial features, and I'd rather not put them down for something they haven't had time to improve on yet. If they ask for crit, I give it to them in a very kind way that is both encouraging and gentle so they don't feel stupid for not doing something that I've been refining over ten years. People really like how I critique and I think it's helped them a lot.
Tldr, don't give unsolicited advice, and when people are open to critique don't make them feel stupid. Though it's very fair that non artists don't know what they're talking about and will 100% lie to u. Get experienced artist to do critique
