BEAST R50 Pathfinder In Arizona (Sub Frame Drop + Lockers)! Awesome Off-Road Pathfinder Builds!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 жов 2024
- Today we look at my trip to Arizona hanging out with some awesome R50 owners! Both of these builds are traction machines that performed really well on off-road terrain. I even got to drive the double-locked + Sub Frame Drop R50 on some obstacles, and it performed great! I cannot understate the boost that lockers give to a built off-road or overland style R50 Pathfinder/QX4. Lockers really are the best modification to take a pathfinder to the next level!
Arizona was a great trip! The weather was good, and it was awesome to finally meet some of my online friends in person! If you've got any questions about these vehicles, please leave a comment or check out their build threads! Thanks for watching guys!

love the rear bumper!!!
Hawairish’s rig is a best. Cool seeing it in action!
It was a dream come true to meet him, as well as get to drive the vehicle!
Wow his rig is beast!!! What a nice guy to let you drive it.
Ya! It was a pleasant surprise when he offered for sure!
I’m from Arizona and I got a bone stock R50 Pathfinder that I daily drive and go off-roading sometimes with my cousin in his 4Runner. It’s always a fun time 💪🏼
Awesome!
I'm in AZ too, phnx with a 99 Pathfinder stock,
places to go?
Awesome! Hawairish is a true gent letting you try it out and see how it behaves differently than yours.
Ya, my jaw probably hit the desert floor when he said I could hop behind the wheel.
It performs great, double locked is still very noticeable over single locked
your channel is inspiring me to ditch my 3rd gen 4runner plans and look into these pathfinders
Love these videos!
Thanks for watching!!
I have a 97 R50 I off-road with frequently in the desert between lake Havasu and Kingman. We just took the trail Brutal run to Wikieup.
I LOVE my r50 2000 Pathy, I've taken her on many adventures in South East Queensland, Australia 🇦🇺 (check out the sand islands of Moreton, North Stradbroke, Bribie, Fraser (K'gari) Islands) I'll have a make a YT video of my own Pathy some day. Wish we had the rear bumper options here like you do in the US. The r50 is very rare, especially the condition mine is in. Anyway great content mate 👌 👍
Thanks! Sounds like you’ve had a blast with your R50!
Nice wheelin’ man! That’s awesome you got to check out those rigs in person, so jealous!
It was pretty awesome! Couldn’t have imagined it going better.
Awesome footage man! That looks so fun!
Thanks dude!
Wow nice rigs. Thanks
Your production quality is getting sooooooo good dude!
Thanks matthew! 🤘
Wow that’s amazing traction,. I’m definitely looking to buy the r50 asap
The traction is coming from the front and rear lockers, not necessarily the inherent design of the R50
Why have I not been looking for pathfinder! Amazing and capable
They’re pretty good, especially with the addition of lockers
Sold me after watching the video where can I find the sub frame drop kit

@@208Tyler ok sounds good going to look at a 2000 qx4 tomorrow any things I should look for
@@Carlos-ip2ir Strut tower rust. Thats a no-go
If it sways at high speeds its the trailing arms. The VG33E has a ~100k mile change interval.
Make sure the trans fluid looks good, the auto's can fail when not properly mantained
Man! those videos are cool man great pathfi's man wish I could do this with mine
Watch all of Tyler’s vids then you CAN do this to yours!
I can’t get over the bumpers! They are badass! I’m assuming they’re custom made.
Yes! custom made by the owner. You can find more information on his vehicle if you search for his member name, Hawairish, on NPORA. He's done lots of threads on bumpers, diffs, and lockers.
Hey Tyler, I started a AZ Nissan 4X4 Facebook group. Figured it might help some of the guys in the area come together.
That’s sweet! Hopefully it does!
How's group doing?
Own a 99 Pathfinder stock...
How can I find you on FB?
Prescott az here
99 under infiniti qx4
Completely stock (vlsd + 4.6s)
Nice! AZ is a great place for wheeling

Awesome video! Man I'm so stoked to see what R50's are capable of. I've watched your channel for a while now as well as having read the NPORA forums with Hawaiirish's threads (really need to join soon). My 02 SE 4x4 has 225k on it, new front & rear driveshafts, SFcreation missing link, AC 2" + kyb front, LR9447 + kyb rear (upgrading to Bilstein 185552 soon), warn hubs, stock wheels, 31" toyos AT2. And still so much I want to upgrade to. I did the 100mile White Rim Road in Utah 3 mos ago as my 1st wheeling trip and now I'm hooked! Want to do more upgrades and do the whole thing again counter clockwise. Just gun shy on spending more cause of the mileage getting up there. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks for the great content 👍
Wow, awesome! Definitely join NPORA.
You're on good suspension and nice tires, I would just modify as you see fit, and focus on using the vehicle for what you love. For a lot of people at your stage there are two directions- One, you start really looking at camping and creature comforts. Drawer systems, awnings, and the like. Two, you can continue to focus on the hard-core capabilities of the vehicle. Lockers, gears, and armor. All of my favorite builds, regardless of how "hardcore" they are, are vehicles that are built to do what the owner loves. If you don't need lockers or bumpers, then by all means skip out on them! Build it to do more of what you enjoy.
@@208Tyler Thanks man! Great advice. Other than the expected oil leak its running pretty well. At what point would you be worried about the engine mileage? At 225k miles right now but im hoping to get past 300k 🤞
@@apmor3738 As far as I can tell, the answer to that question mostly depends on how well the engine has been taken care of. Especially with the VG33's, it seems those engines can handle themselves into the 300k mile range pretty easily with proper maintenance. VQ's can be a little more hit or miss.
Nice rig
I enjoyed a lot watching those R50’s crawling .. so when are you planning to superpack your LSD ?? :D
It was so fun when i did mine..
Ermmmm, idk. Gonna let the diffs sit as they are for a while and see how they do :)
Nissan should bring their body on frame pathfinder
Bring it back? I think those years are gone for good. They’re not even making the Xterra right now.
Love the R-50,I don’t see a lot on the trails in AZ but I’m currently looking for one, think I’m gonna go QX4 if I can find a good one.good thing about Arizona is all the old people that come here in the winter have cars that they don’t use much and if you drive around sun city you can find deals when they sell or there kids are selling.
Thank you for all the info you share on your channel, it's saved me hours and hours of research, I'm kind of copying your build. Do you know where he got those bumpers? Mine are beat up and I don't want to put that $ into new plastic, can't find any Pathfinder bumpers out there.
These are custom. Coastal off-road makes bumpers for R50’s
Currently living on the west side of Phoenix. Pathfinder is being upgraded Currently though.
Nice! I stayed in Phoenix while I was there!
@@208Tyler I've seen quite a few pathfinders locally but not the ones from the video. Hoping to have mine back out on the trails in a month or 2. Let us all know next time you visit
I wish I got the 4WD model QX4
Do you have to change from stock wheels to use 31x10.50R15’s? Looks like they might hit the strut tower in front?
99 R50 with 2” lift. Just starting it’s transformation!
31’s should fit under the strut on stock wheels. Usually it’s tires in the 31.5-32” range that start to have issues.
Nice Arizona vid 👌
I must have killed both my original CV axle boots mudding recently. Do you recommend I find OE replacement CV axles or something from KYB?
OEM axles from a junkyard can be a nice find, since OEM has some of the highest tolerance joints.
I don’t think KYB has axle offerings, a reman or name brand OEM replacement is your best bet after true OEM
Looks awesome! Do you have all the links for all the stuff you used to lift it? Could I please get those! Getting an R50 in a week
I own neither of these pathfinders, you can refer to other videos I have about lifting vehicles, like this one which goes over my build: ua-cam.com/video/qSj6OzflFAE/v-deo.html
@@208Tyler I will! Thank you!
Nice, are the rear bumper and front custome
Correct sir! Both totally custom, in house-efforts on the part of Hawairish
Hi, I just subscribed, do you have issues with Air Mass Sensor? How frequently you need to clean it, did you change it? I love the R50 Pathfinder I am planning to buy a 2004 manual I just need your opinion. Thank you so much for all those awesome videos! 👍 Cheers, The Scudman ✌️
Cleaning your MAF once to twice a year is a good idea depending on how many miles you’re driving each year. I have not changed mine ever.
@@208Tyler Thank you so much 👍
Do you have a diy video on installing the rear tire carrier?? I have a 02 r50 with coastal off-road front bumper and lift. I have the tire carrier but not sure how to tackle this one
I don't have a video on it, read through this entire thread:
www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/topic/40367-r50-tire-carrier-mod-lets-settle-this/#comments
Those 3 spokes look amazing on the Pathys, what are they?
They’re QX4 wheels
R50 what year is that I’m looking for one in Houston I can’t found it
The on frame uni body is much stronger than 4 runner period!
No frame, it's a unibody. The 4runner is definitely stronger
Hello👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼please how can i find a front and rear guardbumper like that?💜💜
The ones in the video are custom. Otherwise, check out Coastal Offroad
How do these compare to the 4runners of the same age? I’ve done some crawling in 90’s 4runners but I find that the pathfinders are cheaper.
4runners are body on frame, and have much greater aftermarket support for the 3rd Gen (96-02). They’re very popular, but very expensive. They don’t always have as nice of an interior or ride quality, but a 3.4 V6 R50 is similarly powered to the 3.3 V6. The front suspension on the 4runner is better and stronger. The pathfinder has an equally stout drivetrain with good diffs and solid manual and automatic transmissions.
But, there’s no 4runner that compares to a late model luxury edition 4WD R50 for comfort and style with the addition of AWD. So, to each their own. They’re similar vehicles with different ceilings of comfort and capability. They’ll both eat gas.
Hey my sister in law is modifying a qx4 for rally driving she's looking for a stronger motor we're also in AZ
I’m not in AZ. The QX4 is a weird choice for rallying. Motor upgrades and swaps are a near dead end for this platform.
When do we get a rig walk around?!
I don’t know. I considered it and thought I had enough footage, but he also has a build thread already. It’s some work
Will the lokka front mechanical locker make the tires chirp/skip when turning on a solid rock surface like a rear one would ?
A mechanical lokka such as the lokka would not necessarily cause tire chirp in many cases on high friction surfaces like rock, in front OR rear placement. The lokka is designed to unlock in high traction situations when one wheel needs to spin faster than the other to corner. This improves street manners on dry pavement. If you are heavy on the throttle, then yes the tires might chirp in the rear. As for the front, the lokka unlocks pretty reliably, allowing you to make a turn in high traction situations. In loose terrain, use of throttle in turns and/or the looseness of the terrain will cause the lokka to remain locked and the vehicle will plow forward through its turn.
@@208Tyler awesome thanks for the help !
How are the road manners?
Great! The owner takes good care of the vehicle and everything rides very nicely
Where can I find those roof rack accessory brackets at?
They’re custom made by the owner
Any idea where he got the spare tire attachment on the back? I want one for my Pathfinder.
It’s retrofitted from a 96-99 R50 that would’ve come with the tire carrier. He got it at a junkyard.
@@208Tyler ahh ok I have a 99 Pathfinder that does not have one on it so I WANT ONE!!!
Привет из России.
Wanna run 33s need a subframe drop kit does krypton still make one, where can i get?
You don’t need a SFD to run 33’s, but if that’s what you have your heart set on, here’s the only place you can order them currently:
www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/topic/46313-the-pines-to-spines-sfd-kit/
Link for spare tire carrier?
The only way to get them is from junkyards. They’re OEM equipment that Nissan no longer makes
Where can this bumper be ordered?
Nowhere. It’s custom
Where did u get the rear bumper!!??? 🤩
It’s not mine.
The owner custom made it
Are those custom bumpers?
As I have mentioned in other comments, yes
@@208Tyler oh ok I just found your channel when I was checking for new Pathfinder vids. I think I was stationed in SC with you
I think you got the wrong guy, I’ve never even been to SC
Hey do you have their instagrams or something because I’m 17 and from Arizona and I have a Nissan Pathfinder r50 and there only 4Runner clubs😭
Neither vehicle owner has IG, but information on their vehicles can be found on NPORA.
Member names Hawairish and R50JR.
Check out the nissan groups in that area, specifically CANVAZ which is an annual all-nissan event hosted between groups of CA, NV, and AZ nissan enthusiasts. You may have to hop on facebook to find these groups. The R50 facebook groups also have a fair amount of AZ members
Thank you really much. I felt like a loner😂. Man Nissan r50 are so underrated and sometimes can perform better than 4Runners. SMH
Ya, vehicle to vehicle they're pretty similar, especially in stock form
There are a handful of R50 owners around town. I’m up in Surprise. I’m out on the trails 1-2 times a month at least.
@@damianmora9099 Show em up boss, R50 is so underrated it’s crazy.
What kind of MPG do you get in your R50?
I own neither of the vehicles in this video.
My own R50 gets 12-17 depending on the season and driving
@@208Tyler right on. I was curious because im considering getting one to overland and daily.
Depends on the engine and tire size and gear ratio and transmission. Stock will obviously do better than mine, and modifications will slowly drag that down
@@208Tyler I'm looking at 2004 and doing a 2" lift and 235 85 16s with 4.8 gears
You can’t get 4.8 gears in these
2000s were the time when SUV truly were SUV. not minivans like how we see the newer pathfinder
The pathfinder got neutered the moment they slapped a unibody and macphearson struts onto one (1996)..... the crossover we see today was the inevitable finish to that initial decision.
There are still plenty of “true” SUV’s today...... Modern platforms like the 5th Gen 4runner are great examples of improved and refined technology in a capable SUV
