Jennette McCurdy's autobiography, I'm Glad my Mom Died", really says a lot about her toxic childhood, and how she was forced to be the primary breadwinner of the family from a young age. I hope that she's in a better place emotionally, now that she's retired from screen acting.

So apparently when I was young, I was scouted at a Walmart. My mom refused and when I was a kid hearing this story, I was mad that my mom didn’t say yes. She said she wanted me to be a kid and I didn’t understand. As an adult, I knew it was because she cared. And I appreciate it
I wanted to be a model. I enjoyed dressing up in you know clothing to very tame and cute clothing, Having a light flash and looking at the end product made me really happy. They offered my parents the job, but my parents had different plans to live a normal life that hurt my heart badly as a kid I always and still do wanna be a model. Sadly I'm smoll and not that great looking even if people say I'm beautiful.

Shirley Temple grew into a stunning young woman, I don’t understand why Hollywood was no longer interested in giving her roles. The philanthropy she dedicated the rest of her life to is very admirable.

Because she actually turned out ok despite the trauma she went through. She had a healthy set of boundaries that they wanted to keep pushing and they knew she wasn't interested in being taken advantage of.
Although if the producers and her agents really put their mind to they probably could have avoided this. She probably was very typecasted, especially with her being known with those big roles she had all were so similar.
They didn't want a beautiful young woman, they wanted a cute kid, I'm sure some people recognized her talents, but it just wasn't what the executives wanted.

Funfact: they killed off Carl in TWD because his actor, Chandler Riggs, turned 18, and they didn't want to pay him an adult wage. Every person on set was surprised by his death in the script, because if you know, Carl is one of the most important characters in the comics and is still alive as I type this. It's REALLY shitty.

For a while, they weren’t okay… thankfully they were able to turn things around for themselves with the support of friends and rehab. From what I heard, Adam Sandler was a big help with Drew Berrymore getting her life back on track; say what you will about Sandler’s career, but he does seem like a caring and supportive friend and an all around good guy.

Idk about McCaullay, but Drew comes from a family of actors and her godfather is Steven Spielberg. It’s not 100% the case, but the child stars who make it out, whether they decide to pursue a career in entertainment or not, seem to have a really good support system and/or come from a wealthier background. An exception would be Demi Lovato who was the bread winner of their family and also didn’t come from a stable family life. Their story reminds me a bit of Shirley Temple’s at the beginning of the video.
Child stars is one of those things that should be considered abuse that never are! Assaults, mental health issues, addiction, countdowns to 18th birthdays, grooming, eating disorders and more!
I never heard about the 18th birthday countdown till Millie Bobby Brown. I was horrified. How does any one think that is OK. I'm 19 and I still feel like a child much less when I was 18. It's horrific. I'm not surprised anymore when child actors go mad. And I've been through SA at 5, gained an ED and anxiety, I can't imagine growing up with that repeatedly happening and no one helping, and everyone looking into ur personal life and judging you or treating you like a spectacle. People are just sick.

Poor Shirley was robbed of her childhood. One time there was an incident on set when she was still little (I believe) around Christmas time where her belief in Santa Claus was completely shattered when the man dressed as Santa pulled down his beard and asked for her autograph. Her mother would also make her cry on purpose on set if she wasn’t faking it well enough on camera.

Drew Barrymore really was the worst experience I’ve read/heard about, she went through every form of abuse possible, not to mention her mother allowed all of it to happen and even encouraged it.
Agreed. She dealt with drug addiction at like 9-11 years old I think. I did a biography project on her in school. Her story is really impactful.
At the very least, she eventually managed to break away from the drugs, abuse, her mother, and made better life for herself, I hope she’s still doing well.

Imagine dying and no one even knows who you are for years and your loved ones don’t even know that you’re dead. Poor Driscoll! Poor Temple too. The fact that her parents pretty much let all those old men drop their pants in front of their daughter and stole all of her money is infuriating!

That's creepy. Imagine a film director and producer say to little kids : "I can't wait for you to turn 18 so we can make more profit out of your body."
Your "can't wait for you to turn 18" comment reminded me of a family friend we used to have. I grew up around him, his kids, his wife- Ect up until I was maybe.. 13 or 14? (Because he and a friend of his did some horrible shit to my older sister, of which is a whole other issue in itself) But he used to say to me all the time "Can't wait until you're legal so I can marry/any other adult thing you" And me, as a kid, didn't understand how fucking creepy that is. I was just a self conscious fat kid, with a shitty home life that took his comments as compliments. But considering what he turned out to be, and my other experiences with predators later on? THAT was a big red flag, that it still surprises me my parents never found it creepy.

That is so disgusting. Back when Emma Watson was still underage, they'd publish countdowns in the media/tabloids until she turned 18. I remember the same stuff happening around the Olsen twins. When Stranger Things had just come out, MBB was what, 12 or 13? I can still remember the sickening sexual comments about her on social media and I knew she would suffer a similar fate. Absolutely horrifying honestly.
Yeah, and it's kinda creepy how so many countdown elements are somewhat normalized in society in general, as well as in the entertainment industry. The stereotype where whenever a girl starts puberty is told that "they're a woman now" is messed up (and I wouldn't be surprised if some societal standards that are creepy come from hold-overs of previous centuries when children were in circumstances to grow up quicker).

You should of mentioned Jackie Coogan. He was the first child star who actually had to sue his parents because they stole all his money. And a law was put in place called The Jackie Coogan law which requires the parents to make a trust fund account for the children in Hollywood. But they have loopholes and many parents seem to have taken advantage of it.

Jeanette McCurdy's mom didn't get her Coogan account setup properly so all that money that should've been in there has never been given to her. Out of all the adults in her life (agent, on set tutor, director, adult cast, etc), not one of them was able to make sure the account was setup.
Also I've heard only a small percent (10% I think?) is put into the Coogan account.
I thought the Coogan Law was set up to prevent Studios from width-holding the child actor’s earnings after they “left” the studio. Or am I misremembering something?

Child Stardom is a shady business, and if I ever had children, I would never force them into a toxic environment like Hollywood, unless they were really passionate about performing. They deserve a childhood, first and foremost, not to be subjected to the fickle, seedy entertainment industry.

It is possible to put your child through that and still have them turn out okay. That said, it seems like if your parents are like the Sprouse twins, and if you’re a boy (Alyson Stoner did pretty good too, but not as good as the Sprouse twins, who also cite the gender differences in exploitation/societal pressures) you can get out relatively unscathed.
It’s still not something that ppl should jump into tho, but if they at least do what the Sprouse family did, things could be ok.
I realize it sounds like I’m implying guys got it “easier”. They don’t, it’s just a tiny bit more likely that they can get out fine just cuz of how ppl see girls and boys differently in society. But even so, it’s very difficult to get out fine overall, and you need to have REALLY good parents to do it, which sadly is a rarity for everyone, regardless of gender.
I want to cry about Bobby Driscoll. I can’t imagine what he was thinking in his final moments, tossed aside by the world like that and left to die all alone. It’s so horrible

I had this one friend that said “who cares? Celebrities can afford therapy” and after that I unfortunately learned how fucking common this VERY CONCERNING mindset is… it’s ok to push trauma, assault and abuse aside because you THINK they can afford professional help to fix the trauma they shouldn’t have gone through?
For a lot of these celebrities, it's not about affording it. It's knowing that seeking it requires exposing the abuse, which is all but guaranteed to get them fired and/or blacklisted.

Here's hoping that the issues with the Internet/social media gets people out of that mindset and teaches people to be more empathetic, as it seems to do nothing else for celebrities other than dehumanize them and put them on a higher pedestal. With the Internet/social media, a lot of the issues celebrities go through are no longer exclusive to them - anybody has the possibility of going through them too now that it's easier for people to project themselves than ever before.
That’s a disgusting mindset. No one deserves to be traumatized, and everyone should get help through therapy regardless of their wealth/status. The fact people still think that way is so disappointing

As someone who grew up watching Shirley Temple films, I had no idea about all the horrible things she went through as a child. No one should ever have to deal with all the abuse, grooming, and torture like these kids did. I’m glad there are those like Jeanette McCurdy who are healing from the trauma, but at the same time, it’s something that should’ve never happened in the first place.

From the ages of about 3 to 9, my mother would force me to participate in child modeling. She would design the clothes, I would wear them. I actually became famous on a small scale in my state because I went on to win dozens of competitions. I even went on to become the Pineapple Prince. Because of this I was in newspapers often which resulted in me landing some commercials which I of course didn't want to do. Naturally dressing a kid in a bunch of goofy outfits is going to get them bullied and because I was in the newspapers all of the time my school found out. For my entire time at school I was viciously bullied all because I was forced to do something I had no interest in doing. Kids would never refer to me by my name. Instead I would be called f*ggot or p*ssy. Thankfully I never suffered like any of the children in these videos did and I received most of my earnings when I became 18 but it still took me a while to forgive my mom.

I always had a bad feeling about child acting in Hollywood, but hearing about Bobby Driscoll and Shirley Temple... it's heart breaking. Poor kid's had their own childhoods ripped out of their hands by their families and forced into a cruel place like the acting industry, makes me want to go back in time and give them a hug, tell em it's going to be alright and that their voice will be heard.

There might as well be a child actors guild or union to prevent these unsafe conditions. Repeat offenders like Disney and Nickelodeon seem to have _way_ too many kid actors going through struggles when they get older. Companies that rely on kids for profit should have higher standards of safety to watch out for abusive stage parents and creepy studio staff.

I was never a child star, but my dad would record us and try to get us to make money and only think of business at a young age with our skills. So I’m thinking about work and having children and their children all at the age of 7. I couldn’t even go to Public school because of him and had to travel everywhere for more work. So like my social skills are horrible.
Even tho I wasn’t in the child-star work like them and only had a “microscopic” taste of it, That shit hurts and still stresses me out to this day. Especially when they constantly bring it up and make it your fault for not succeeding how they wanted you too. I feel for these kids/and grown child stars so much 🙏 great video btw

When I was a child talent agencies would come to our school and pretend they are just there for fun teaching us to model, act… but they actually scout kids. I got scouted after they lined us up and made us walk like models down a line. I took the card to my parents not knowing what it is and my grandma was so excited she wanted me to become a star but my parents refused. I was maybe 7 so I don’t remember much but it was one of the bigger fights my mom and grandma had.
A few years ago there was a big scandal bcs a few people who were in the company came out and accused it of grooming and SA when they were kids. Idk what would have happened if my grandma had her way and I actually signed with them.

This made me think of those articles that are like 'The child actors from your favourite childs TV shows/ films- where are they now?' with a surprisingly high amount basically saying 'unfortunately they couldn't get any more acting roles because they got old so now they live a totally normal life with a normal job, married with kids- such a shame they were so talented'
Peter Ostrum, who played Charlie Bucket in Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, was smart. He was a talented little guy--it takes a special kind of child actor to make me feel like his character is a real kid and not a Precocious Hollywood Moppet (tm). Which was true of all the Willy Wonka child actors. But Peter decided one acting job was enough, and had a quiet but fulfilling career as a veterinarian. (Making animals well is okay in my book.)

I always go to what happened to Corey haim, river phoenix, drew Barrymore, Jonathan brandis... drugs, abuse, being forgotten , being surrounded by people who want your money or don't help or care for you. The stories of these children being passed around, or given drugs before they're even teenagers. It's a disgusting scary business.

I feel some of the blame for former child stars having emotional breakdowns can be placed on the parents not protecting them. A good example of a child star with great parents is Mara Wilson aka Matilda. They were very protective of her, made sure she only had parts appropriate for her age, and made sure she got to be a normal kid too. When she decided she didn’t wanna act anymore they let her stop, and she is now a well-adjusted adult who does writing/charity work.
At the end of the day, the parents are the ones putting their kids into acting. Even if they wanna act, its the parents responsibility to keep them safe. But too many parents are leeching off their kids and living vicariously through them, they fail their main task as a parent.
This is a topic you can revisit over and over again, the 2 Corey's and so many others before and after. It's a very relevant conversation.

The thing is, I hope ppl who feel like their childhood has been ruined can understand that their feelings as a child were valid and I’m sure the kids who acted in those roles wouldn’t want anyone to feel like shit cuz they enjoyed them in ignorance. You can still appreciate the good stuff that came out of it, know that you’re not a bad person for having enjoyed it at the time, and had it influence you. But you must acknowledge how horrific it was in reality and still want better for the victims. We can do both. It’s incredibly self absorbed to claim “childhood ruined” when nothing hurt you directly, and the victims are the true ppl who had their childhood ruined. Ppl think that if they enjoyed it they were just as bad as the abusers and then want to blame the victims and feel “superior” as a result. But you’re only as bad as the abusers if you victim blame.

As a kid, I always wanted to be an actress, but I knew I wanted to wait until I was 18 to start professionally because of all the child star horror stories out there. My heart goes out to every kid who got hurt by these demonic corporations; chewed-up and spit out onto the streets as soon as they're sucked dry of all their luster. Shirley, Bobby, Orlando, Jeanette... every last kid. No child, no person, deserves the childhoods that they suffered through. Parents, be careful and attentive of your children: you never know what is happening behind the scenes.

Craziest thing about shirley temples story. 44k in 1940’s when she wouldve become of age to take it, is 800,000 in todays money and 3 million wouldve been worth 60 million today. So dont get me wrong she still had loads of money to buy and invest in whatever she needed to continue to stay rich. But the fact that her parents stole 59 million is insane🤣
Take the 2 Corey's for example (Feldman and Haim) they came forward about the abuse they suffered at the hands of Hollywood.
the two Cory's, Macaulay Culkin, neil patrick harris whom turned it into a comedy awareness, pretty much look up any 80s to 90s kid star and they came out at one point saying how gross the industry was. the child stars who made a career past child hood is such a short list.
NPH barely had work past Dougie houser but came back strong with his "i was a child star and failed after" comedy that he got back into it strong with how i met your mother, and various web shows, same with will wheton. MJ was such obvious considering things. saun astin as well he got lucky.

I can't imagine as a parent having my child in that line of work and not watching over them like a hawk to try and make sure something like that doesn't happen. While in many cases the parents do know and just want to keep the cash flow coming in. Pure greed and selfishness and the kids are the ones who suffer. I can guarantee there are more child actors who were abused and just never came forward or public with it
@@azadalamiq It's worth mentioning that Sean Astin's parents were successful actors in their own right (John Astin and Patty Duke Astin). They didn't need his acting income, or that of his brother, Mackenzie Astin, to keep their family afloat.

It's truly weird, but it reminds me of what evangelical "child preacher" Marjoe Gortner said about how he was able to "miraculously" memorize long sermons as a child: if he made a mistake, his mother held his head underwater in the bathtub. As a young adult, he made a movie about his experiences, called *Marjoe* (1972).

I'm really happy about this overall shift in tone towards child stars going off the rails. It still comes with a sense of smugness and mockery from regular people with the sense of "can't feel sorry for rich kids!" mentality. But with SO many horror stories out there now, it's impossible to ignore the reality of child stardom and how awful it can be!
The ones that turn out okay, are usually ones with decent/smart parents and/or ones who know the industry well (i.e. Sean Astin, Elijah Wood, Jason Bateman, Kurt Russell etc.). The ones with shitty folks, either crash and burn (i.e too many to fucking count!), or have to work extra hard to overcome the 'child/teen star curse' in adulthood (i.e. Drew Barrymore, Robert Downey Jr, Macualay Culkin etc.).
I never knew the story about Bobby Driscoll. Peter Pan was one of the movies I watched alot as a kid, and it's so fucking sad
The complete story is even sadder than what was told in the video. Bobby wasn't merely buried in a stand-alone unmarked grave as shown. He was buried in a mass grave, from which it was impossible for his mother to retrieve his body. He remains to this day and will remain forever truly a lost boy.

Jennette McCurdy and Britney Spears have really exposed the industry. Now that we have family channels, I won't be surprised if those kids come out and speak against their parents one day.

I’m glad child stars are coming out about this BS more often lately. People need to know this. I also wasn’t ever a big fan of Disney, and now I’m even less of a fan.
I hate that people act like Child Actors can't make ANY mistakes in their adulthood. I mean out of everyone they're the SMALL handful of people who I would expect to make the most mistakes since they weren't allowed to spend their childhood making those mistakes. That's literally the WHOLE POINT of childhood. Learn, make mistakes, and navigate risks. It breaks my heart that they lose out on that....and then get shit on by everyone for doing drugs
Also didn't Shirly Temple become an international diplomat in adulthood? Or something along those lines. Either way she was one of the few that managed to fight her way out of the hell that is Hollywood.

Bobby Driscolls story angers me the most out of all of these. That poor man was treated like a work horse/fuck toy and was treated like trash by almost everyone he ever knew. Even by his own parents.

They always fell for the false light that they accuse others of falling for. Which is why I left the church for good and learned so much without it. Again like I said I was raised in the Catholic Church and they are clueless about anything spiritual. They don’t realize it’s a pagan religion since they not only worship Mary but also the saints. I have watched the rituals for years before leaving in my teens. The church services worship the sun gods and the Eucharist is symbolic cannibalism ritual.

I feel like the only child stars who turned out alright were Dylan and Cole sprouse, considering their parents wanted them to have life experience like working at a restaurant and attending university and whatnot
The Harry Potter kids seem to have done fine--maybe because in the U.K., the acting profession seems to focus more on the art of it than "being a star." And their parents seem to have had it together. Jodie Foster never went off the rails, because she made sure to focus on her education. Peter Ostrum and the Willy Wonka kids seem to have done okay, though Peter decided against any more acting roles and became a veterinarian. Mara Wilson of Matilda also had parents who looked out for her, and turned out fine. (She wrote an insightful article on child stardom and why so many child stars go off the rails for Cracked.) And Henry Thomas--Elliott in E.T.--has had a pretty respectable career. The stuff he's been in has had a pretty good pedigree--Ishmael in an adaptation of Moby Dick with Sir Patrick Stewart as Ahab, the HBO movie about the McMartin child molestation case, a young Norman Bates in Psycho IV, the recent Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House. (And the short but very affecting "sequel" to E.T., courtesy of Xfinity.)

Parenting really does play a big part. I watched a video somewhere. It said that these nick/disney producers also look for children whose parents aren’t fussy about leaving them with the adults (aka gullible parents)

Talking about someone who passed without a lot of people knowing was Jonathan Brandis. He was pretty big in the 90s and I had his posters. It was six months later that I found out that he unalived himself because I was curious about something he had been in. It's sad that so much of this goes on in Hollywood.
Black died in 2005, and Temple in 2014.

such a great vid. i remember i was younger and really wanted to be a famous musician when in elementary school. i’m glad my plan didn’t work out in that time since horrible people would have taken advantage so quickly. i was such a yes girl but now have matured and know what i really want and know when to say know and take it slow!
