The story behind the line and the cereal:
"One scene required the Leprechaun to find and eat Lucky Charms cereal, which the company gave them permission to do. Upon seeing the finished film, the company was displeased and would not allow them to use the scene. The film makers had the choice to either cut the scene or to re-shoot it, costing them more money. They chose to re-shoot it, replacing the brand name with an obvious spoof of the name brand cereal, and, made one last additional surprise ending scene while they were filming. Furious with the cereal company for making them re-shoot the scene, they pulled the kid character aside and had him say a new line. His line, "Your luck just ran out!" was changed to "F*ck you, Lucky Charms!" as an obvious reference to the whole ordeal."
i know i am way late to the punch line seeing as i only came across this channel a few weeks ago but i was actually about to say that something like this probably happened seeing as how he spit it out cuz it tasted bad and the movie ended on such a line lol then i saw that this was the 3rd comment lols

Fun fact: it was originally meant to be a straightforward horror film but Warwick Davis wanted to inject some humor into it. Hence it being horror comedy.
But doesn't comedy mean it's funny?
That’s actually near the opposite of what happened. It was meant to be a pg-13 horror-comedy, but the studio wanted to go to a harder R-rating half way through filming.
The Whole cop scene, after the Lep attacks him by the car, was all a later reshot add-on, to add more violence to the movie.
That change to an R-rating is also why Lucky Charms pulled out, that kitchen scene was supposed to include the real lucky charms, and the line near the end “F U / Screw U Lucky Charms” was part of the re-shoots. That last line almost had the kid pulled from the movie, as his parents didn’t like his character swearing.
You can see the comedic intent in the kills, the shoe fetish, and his choices of vehicles being front and center the whole film.

You know what I just realized? This movie has a fucking enormous plothole. If O'Grady knew that four leaf clovers could kill the leprechaun if it touched his body, WHY DIDN'T HE DO THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE AT THE BEGINNING??

I love Warwick Davis. It’s rare to see an actor who truly loves their craft and that’s Warwick. He’s not in it for the fame or the money, he’s in it because he loves it. Though this is ridiculous, he really did have fun with this movie and it shows. I hope Warwick receives more credits because he deserves it.
I'm in full agreement with everything you said, especially the part about Warwick getting more credit.
Even in the sequels that bombed, like Back 2 Tha Hood, or the Willow Disney + series, he tries his best. He truly is a treasure.

Actually, the leprechaun having an obsession with shining shoes is taken from folklore about leprechauns. Why leprechauns in GENERAL have an obsession with shining shoes... I don't know, but then again their basic concept is pretty silly too.
A leprechaun could make a coin or two by shinin shoes.

@@peternormand4094 That's sort of a characteristic of faeries in general. They like pretty, shiny things. The shoe fixing obsession is more typical of brownies, a type of benign faerie who move into a house and help their hosts by doing all the chores at night while everyone's asleep. At least it shows that the writers of this movie had some awareness of faerie folklore.

From the short research I found, Leprechaun are of the Fey, born from a bad spirit and are neither good or bad but will play mean "pranks" on humans, but to Fey ripping out your heart and sewing it on your sleeve is a joke about "wearing your heart on your sleeve" As much as just magical adding hearts to your shirt. They have a morbid sense of humour and it can be different from Leprechaun to Leprechaun. They are FABLED to be excellent craftsmen of shows and in the 19th century, the joke is that word leprechaun is very close to Shoe-shining in irish so that is where the joke comes from... but that is really... "Debatable."
The originals don’t really play pranks, it’s just bringing you luck, good or bad, but it wasn’t under their total control.
You would leave a saucer of milk on the window sill for them to drink, and they would leave you with the “luck of the Irish”. Which used to be kinda the joke, since the Irish went from famine to feast to famine, at the drop of a hat, and the Lep’s were supposedly responsible for that.
Ken Hudson I've also an interest in the aos sidhe (the Gaelic name for the fair folk/fey), and yes they are similar to the good folk and gentry (and land wights and other spirits in this vein)
I like the leprechaun movie mainly because I look at it as a comedy not horror

It reminded me a lot of Evil Dead.
Just like I mainly like Nostalgia Critic, because it's more comedy than anything near to serious critics. ^^

It's a shame they took this film so seriously. This isn't suppose to be a straight up horror film. How could not be?? The leprechaun series is freaking hilarious!
They did mention in the commentery for this review that they knew that and actually kind of enjoy the series.

Those scenes are a remnant of the original intent of the movie. It’s was supposed to be a pg-13 horror-comedy, and the studio changed it to an R-rating halfway through filming.

I remember the second one to be much better. The plot was cohesive, the deaths WERE actually inventive and brutal, such as when the Leprechaun uses his magic to trick a guy into thinking a working industrial fan is a naked girl and giving "her" a motorboat... And they even followed Doug's advise and gave Leprechaun a sexual predator vibe by having him kidnap the protagonist's girlfriend and talk about "changing" her so that she'd be his proper bride.
Alknix And then we got "Leprechaun on the Moon" which was literally a leprechaun using guns on a spaceship to fight highly trained soldiers.

It was supposed to be their weakness, that was a help to the poor. Because the poor would rarely, if ever, have shined shoes, so the Lep would shine them. While he rich alias walked around with clean, already shined shoes, and wouldn’t be able to get away.

I'm Irish too and I and many of my friends love these movies, it's a dark comedy, not a horror movie, hell, Lep in the hood is collectively our favourites, they are hilarious and not really offensive, they just went all out with the leprechaun mythos.

Warwick Davis was amazing in this role. If I remember correctly the only reason why Davis didn't return for the remake was to take care of his family. Also this movie was originally going to be a scary movie but was actually on purpose turned into a dark comedy. Another fun fact is the scene involving Davis in the wheel chair the camera man had to speed the camera footage up because Davis couldn't move the wheelchair fast enough due to his size.
Not just his size. I'm a wheelchair user. It's difficult to build up that kind of speed, especially without a really good quality active chair

As far as I know, all Fey/Fae have sort of a compelling action associated with them, like polishing shoes, counting rice etc.
In fairytales of old it was more than often the only way to weaken a Fae or trick them, because they usually could't be defeated by regular means.

Made $8.6 million on a $1 million budget despite it being released in January which is the worst time for any Hollywood production
I remember renting it a lot on vhs which is interesting cause Trimark Studios got their big break during the video boom of the 90s thanks to Blockbuster stores
This was my first introduction to Warwick Davis, his most well known role and actually his favorite even though not all the movies were critical darlings, it's very basic after all
He illustrates the deadlinesses of greed and possessiveness
Still crazy this was Jennifer Aniston's first film role despite that she regretted the experience
No bad acting in this and you have some very likable human players particularly Mark Holton as Ozzie who has a lovable childhood imagination though he's often ostracized for it
Although some of these people can be dim witted at times then again they can't comprehend fighting off a supernatural creature and they give it their best given the premise
In all honesty this isn't the scariest thing out there as it's played more for laughs
That Lucky Charms line is still a masterpiece of writing next to Warwick Davis owning this role, he was born to play this Irish villain
Silly but a favorite among horror geeks as a guilty pleasure and it embraces its campiness
Plenty of dark humor and slapstick among the blood making the genre fun for viewers
Plus it's a reminder of the dangers of perceived debts...this leprechaun will collect to save his riches by any means
Amazing to think too it spawned a franchise with loads of sequels spanning over 3 decades but this original will always come out on top above the rest
It subverts the horror tropes and its success was due to not finding the biggest audience but rather the right one
Still one of my favorite slasher villains to this day

I had a VHS of this movie and watched it a lot as a kid. Pretty sure it was a horror-comedy movie and I liked it for what it was.
You know, I wish there were more crossover reviews like this one. The ones Doug and Brad did later let their real friendship show through, which is cool, but I think their characters hating each other is so much funnier.
