- Have you ever wanted to sit down for an hour and half with John Powell and really get to know him and his process fully? Well now you can with our latest installment in the All Access series. We cover everything from John's path into music and what really made him settle down to become a film composer. He takes us through his journey starting out working under Hans Zimmer in the 90's, including teaming up with Harry Gregson-Williams. John talks extensively about his methods and processes, and you'll really get to understand how he analyzes a scene or project. We talk about the state of the industry and why Hollywood's obsession with violence caused him to quit action movies and focus solely on animation. Hear fun little details from his scores across his career, such as when The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman lost a bet that ended up causing him some discomfort to his testicles (yep, it's a John Powell interview after all!).
In deep sincerity John describes in immense detail about the historical events of World War 1 that inspired him to take 2 years off of writing scores to focus on his concert piece, A Prussian Requiem which premieres March 2016 and will see an album release later that year. After hearing John speak about it, you will have a full understanding of what drove him to write it. John also shares why he continually tells himself that his music is not good enough and we explore where in terms of quality he is trying to reach. From his favorite drink to what he does outside of music, you'll experience John Powell like you never have before. It was a supreme honor to speak casually, intimately and in-depth about his life and career. Sit back and relax and enjoy the wonderful brilliant mix of genuine sincerity and sarcastic hilarity that is John Powell. Only on Film.Music.Media: All Access.
*John's latest score sees him returning to live-action with Pan. We don't discuss it in this interview, but if you'd like to hear John speak on his work on Pan please check out this other interview that FMM's Kaya Savas shot for the IFMCA where John speaks about Pan after accepting his IFMCA Award for How To Train Your Dragon 2. They may not get hundreds of thousands of views, but these videos, (along with all the work you do) are some of my favorite things on the internet. I seriously appreciate it man, thanks a lot for sharing :)
Seriously! A couple years ago I had a much harder time finding stuff like this. But it's a lot easier thanks to this :D
+Ross Bugden Thanks for the kind feedback :)
What a difference it makes when the interviewer is actually knowledgeable about his interviewee
I think his most impressive work has to be How to Train Your Dragon from 2010. The score is just so beautiful, exciting, and amazing, and John Powell was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Score for the film. My favorite song from the soundtrack has to be Forbidden Friendship, it's just so relaxing and it actually made me fall asleep a few times while listening to it.
I think his work on P.S I Love You is simply absolutely brilliant
I really hope he will do a masterclass for scoring for animation :D
Wow I love him. He's so honest, but he values music so highly. He has such a noble shame and humility about him. All that stuff about his requiem starting at 59:43 is sooo awesome. I've always thought about WWI being a crazy catalyst for all the troubles of the 20th and now 21st century and he feels it so deeply.
I love that interview. John Powell is such a modest Person. Also great his Story about Jerry Goldsmith.
I love how, in these interviews, the people are just being themselves. You really get a feel for the person, and that feel is genuine. Awesome to watch!
Face/Off is when I started noticing this genius. His Bourne themes are Oscar worthy.
This is now one of MY FAVORITE videos ever :D Thanks a lot. Powell and Williams are my fav composers ever. I'm in love with what Powell does and man, I wish I was you interviewing him :D
Yes :D On every day I here the How to train your dragon score from John Powell. It's so awesome. He is awesome.
This was such a huge relief to watch. There are many things about the way he composes that I can completely relate to. The being unable to hear more than 2 seconds ahead part for example, and how he considers himself a 'disabled' composer. Or how he started composing because he wasn't a good enough player. I don't consider myself half as skilled as John Powell, but I can certainly relate to these things!
Thank you for the video +Film.Music.Media
I started d watching one of the master class he gave on youtube before going to bed and the choir have pretty important part of his creative process that's was fun to learn and also funny in the context of the master class.
Same for me! All those things he said apply to my style of composing as well.
Would love to see more like this with video! Great work, great interview.
Thank you so much for this!
I see a Whammy Pedal on top of that cabinet! How totally rawkin'! What a great interview! Thanks so much!
Great interview with a great composer! Thanx alot for this video! :) Looking forward for more such stuff ... :)
Great interview! I can really relate with the things he said about his composition process nad he mentioned Penderecki and Ligeti=awesome!
Loving how honest Powell is here! Great insight. It's great to hear such an accomplished composer talk about their taste and opinions on the industry.
Thank you for doing this. Great video.
These are the kind of videos I would dream about watching years ago, when there was nothing like this available. And now here they are thanks to you guys! I feel really grateful for being able to watch this! It's priceless information and knowledge for all film music lovers, wether musicians or not. THANK YOU! And keep the amazing work!
Thanks so much for the kind words, and thanks for taking the time to watch/listen! The whole goal was to indeed fill a void that wasn't there before. And the hope is for these long-form video interviews to hopefully do something different than most of the interviews out there. John is also the best!
He is indeed! As are you for taking the time and effort to make the videos available for us! ;)
A very down to earth guy. Cheers John , will look forward to many more of your movie 🎥 soundtrack 🎥

Just love your channel, thank you.
Great interview. Thanks
Amazing
He's a great inspiration to me. I am a musician as well, I compose music and my dream is to compose a song that would be used in a film soundtrack one day! John Powell's music is brilliant and brings me to tears every time. A GENIUS! :)
This is by far the BEST interview I've seen by any film composer! Jerry Goldsmith is the closest. This is a great one, and your work with the All Access series is Top Notch!!!!
Thanks so much for the kind feedback and support!
I really love these interviews. Do you think you can interview Ramin Djawadi?
This is the best of the internet.
It truly truly is the place where there is purity
:)
mission impossible.....17 you're great John
1:27:57 speaking his thoughts out!
In all seriousness though, a lot of knowledge on his philosophy of film composing as well as the world war. I like that he continually tries to improve on his music and does his job for the sake of music.
Please do the next one with Harry Gregson-Williams on the eve of The Martian release.
+jethalal gada Missed the eve of The Martian release, but Harry was kind enough to make some time! ua-cam.com/video/TYPojRh7Umg/v-deo.html
You guys have to interview Harry Gregson Williams, that would be super amazing!
+DJSH Music + Henry Jackman!
+DJSH Music Made it happen! Enjoy! ua-cam.com/video/TYPojRh7Umg/v-deo.html
+Film.Music.Media You guys have no idea how happy I was when I saw the video pop up :D I really love this series! HGW and Inon Zur are two guys who I love so much but do very little behind the scenes or studio interviews, So its huge you have hour+ long interviews inside their studios Thanks Guys :D
1:12:16 I'm french and I'm offended. But I still leave a like because it's an awesome video.
26:35 3 days to write 45 min of music? That is crazy
yeah its absolutely crazy. i can get a 2 minute idea in 4 hours. So much respect for this man
PLEASE INTERVIEW HANS ZIMMER ALL ACCESS!!!
samuelkimmusic Please Don't
@Samuel Kim Music You are a tremendous talent. Such a fan of yours 🎼🎼
ALFIE ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Can you please interview Thomas Newman ? There are very few videos about him on internet.
What do these composers think about figure skaters, gymnasts, etc. using their music? Do they ever consider how else their music is used outside film when they compose?
46:20 can anyone find the film he's talking about??? The stop motion horror he scored. I'd love to see it.
"i'm a bad piano player..." so do i... Now i'm not worried :D
Bintang Rizky Utama tat part really relaxed me off my fear tat im not good enough.. lol
Hahaha i've been composing music digitally... i play instruments except Piano... Not very good and probably never be good... hehe
At 26:24, what does he mean with underwriting? Anyone pls help :D
To put it bluntly, essentially "phoning it in" :P. Underwriting is essentially doing the bare minimum needed with the music. Think of music that just sits on top of the picture versus music that is more intricate and works with the shape of scenes, pacing and the overall narrative structure.
46:42 Anyone know how/where to find that short film on UA-cam?
please, can you write what i said?
I don't think JP has really listened to much Jerry Goldsmith, he certainly didn't only write in the style of Ravel. In fact Ravel is the least of his influences.
