D...! I gort rid of a handmade archtop guitar..not knowing this years ago.I just purchased a 3 fret leveler. Diamond crowning tool, fret protectors, Fixed two minor fret problems in less then one hour.Someone wolud have charged 100.00 or more for both guitars. The 175 investment paid for itself almost the first day. Incredible videos Stew Mac. will buy some more tools soon. Thanks for the info/tools
@mrbano25 Unfortunately this truss rod is anchored at one end, so you would need to carefully steam off the fingerboard to remove the existing truss rod.
@JYZProductions Erick said this, "It is very difficult to diagose your truss rod issue without having the guitar in my hands to inspect. If I had to guess, it sounds like your truss rod nut might be stripped out. So I suggest taking your guitar to a nearby repair shop for an evaluation. They should be able to identify the issue and offer a solution. Good luck!"
@damianwilson Ouch -- sorry to hear about that! It's a tough situation. Probably the best bet is to ask another luthier to look at it and diagnose the problem.
@chase4train A lot of things add up to a smooth-operating tuner: your string tension, how worn-out the tuner is, etc. If the tuner has exposed gears, try using Tri-flow lube (found on stewmac.com)
I've seen some complaints about the price of this tool. If it's a guitar that you bought new for a few hundred dollars, then you probably aren't going to want to spend that kind of money to fix it, unless you're very attached to it. On the other hand, if you're playing a guitar worth thousands of dollars, then $250 bucks to fix the truss rod is a hell of a bargain compared to replacing the rod and refinishing the guitar. Also keep in mind that Stew Mac is a major supplier to guitar repair/build shops. So if you're a luthier and you've already got a bunch of expensive shop equipment, a tool like this is a fairly small investment. It will give a luthier/tech the ability to look a distraught guitarist in the eye and say, "Oh, I can fix that. No problem!". This means that even if you're on a budget and playing an off-the-shelf Epiphone from Guitar Barn, and your truss rod nut breaks off, you can take it to a tech who has this tool and he can fix it for you at a cost that should be far, far cheaper than replacing your entire instrument.
You're just another half wit trying to defend highway robbery. Your arguments hold no water. According to you, you would have no problem with someone charging $50.00/ gal of water if your towns water system wasn't working. Give me a break. YOU are a fool!
Stew-Mac does add a huge aup charge on all their stuff. Its virtually all too expensive to justofy buying. BUT I do agree with the original poster here. These tools are for the technician or luthier that needs to knpw when they buy a specific tool, itll prpbably be the only one theyll ever need tp buy. Its not for some random yahoo who looks at one internet video and decides to "fix" their BC roch Bronze Warlock. Also that example of selling water...well it doesnt hold any. Stew Mac isnt selling water. Theyre selling the tool you need to fix the plumbing and you only need to buy that tool one time. Sure, they charge a huge premium and that sucks but thats also capitalism. You are free to not buy the tool or tp buy one elsewhere.
@ofirg32 if the trussrod is weak you may want to just consider getting a replacement neck just for better playability. that way you keep the original neck intact (just not on the body). i have a '71 univox hi flyer that i believe has a broken truss rod. it still works fine (i just know its not perfect, hah). ive been looking for a neck on ebay for a while with no luck.
@Yeseniaschick Most production 12-string guitars utilize the same truss rod as their 6-string sisters. We have seen a number of custom builders reinforce their 12-string models with carbon fiber rods for additional strength- go to stewmac.com and search Carbon Fiber Rods.
just too much money. This stuff needs to be adorable. I've got Dan's book too. As a former Gunsmith most of guitar repair is common sense. Nice work and video.
Dan ,love your knowledge and these videos I could watch all day. I have an expensive gibson flying v with trussrod severed flush at the point where it should extend to accept the nut. I have used your technique to help the neck bend flat with help of a carpenters similar to your father's. My fear is this when I flatten out the neck using your helper method just to get a feel for how much the neck will need to move, shouldn't the brokenoff end of the trussrod thrust itself out of the neck some? My rod doesn't seen to move a hair. Could this be evidence of more trouble such as another break in the trussrod somewhere deeper in the neck. I would hate to spend almost 3 bills just to find the trussrod is unfixable
I have a 1947 Gibson es 350 with a stripped truss rod nut. It was recommended by a luthier that the fretboard would have to be removed at a cost off at least 1000 dollars to complete the repair. The guitar is clean, but not dead mint. This repair would devalue the guitar even more. The 250 buck purchase for this tool might do the trick without a major repair bill/ headache. Might be very well worth it. Hmmm....thanks Dan!
nice video sir! but how about a strat? it has a smaller space? my strat's truss rod is broken. and i dont want the luthier here to cut my fretboard open for the worry of he cant close it back as good as new... can your second demo on the video applicable on the strat? hoping for your answer and sorry 4 my english... thank you sir... frm the phils.
The truss rod in my acoustic won't tighten any further. I'm going to use some lube to see if that solves he problem. But if not, trying a couple of washers might be good but my problem is that the truss rod itself leans to one side, quite close to the side of the wood. Getting washers on might be a problem.
Ever find out that some of the buzz from say..your D string at the fifth fret is that that particular frequency is causing other stuff to vibrate...or that the slot in the stoptail bridge doesn't seat the string well, or that in my case, that frequency was causing the bridge pickup to vibrate in it's casing. Well, of course that frequency also happened to make the whole guitar vibrate more more than any other...some tightening and damping of the pickup shut down about 95% of the buzz from it.
i love stew mac kit very mch it fixed all my guitar neck..i want to ask sir if theres a way to repair my acoustic guitar without removing the fretboard?my truss rod is broken,it has a metal U-shape type casing around the rod.,and i cant strip the metal..your kit only strip the wood so that the rod can be easily treaded..thats my only problem..do you have a repair kit the strips the u-shape metal?tnx and more power..
Per the price debate, I will say as a journeyman Ironworker that the right tool at the right time is worth its weight in gold. And if you're making money off of that tool, whether it's for a paycheck or just the satisfaction of not paying someone else do something that you'd like know how to do, it's worth more than that. In my trade, a cheap tool can kill you.
How can I tell if my neck is warping? What does the truss rod mainly affect? How do I know it's broken? I have a schecter Damien elite and am concerned with it's condition. Some of rhe strings are not in tune, and I want to see what I can do to fix it,
what is better for a spanisch gitar to adjust the neck. A trustrod with the bold on top like this electric guitar or with the trustrod bolt in the opening down/under the neck.
best idea ever. I'm gonna get one. I broke the truss rod on my 12 string and the repairs will cost 400 dollars to fix "the traditional" way. I, using patience and care, could do this myself thus saving 150 dollars. I don't know why my luthier doesn't have one of these. HEY, I BET HE DOES. I need to ask him to do it the NEW and 'correct' way!
Hi, I wonder if you could clear something up about truss rods. I don't know what a maxed out truss rod means. Does it mean that the nut has screwed down to the end of the threads on the rod or that the nut has screwed down to the end of the threads on the nut so that washers need to be used?
All my Guitars are pretty easy to set up, mainly use Gibson, my standard I've had for 12 years & I'm just starting to have issues now, it plays great apart from 1 problem the high E keeps coming off the board, could it be the Nut??
Hello! could anyone tell me what is the right tool to adjust a musicman spokewheel trussrod --- i bowed and ruined dozens of screwdrivers because it is so tight with strings on -- even in the huge stewmac catalogue i couldn´t find a dedicated tool (believe it or not..).!!
Very helpful video, don't know what all the fuss is about griping about the cost of tools, you want your guitar fixed, you gotta spend the dough,if not, your left with kindling for the stove.
Harmonic53 The fuss is about the ridiculous price and fools like you who believe that it is justified. Your comment paraphrased would be; "don't know what all the fuss is about it's only money, you want your guitar fixed, StuMac has you by the balls, Let them squeeze till you drop from the pain then pay them their outrageous price or your left with kindling for the stove." Oh... and after you pay, tell the world on UA-cam, or better yet on their web sight, how great they are and how much you love them for over charging you. Anybody who buys tools knows that the price for each of these sets at about $231.00/set is highway robbery. They shouldn't cost more than $50.00/set.
my truss isn't broken off and doesnt have a stripped threads. I was told it was "unthreaded." When i tune it to the standard E-E tuning the neck is flat. But when i tune it down a step from there the neck is over bowed. When i go to adjust the neck the truss nut backs off the threads. Will this tool fix my problem????
i have an old fender jazz bass that has the same truss rod with this gibson and i want to replace the truss rod with a new one. how can i pull out the old one? i hope you or someone could help me..thnks..
I have a gibson les paul studio 2016t ebony with gold hardware. When playing, when bending my high E string at the 12th and 14th frets ONLY, I fret out. Meaning, I get no sound on the bend, it dies out. So I thought I would loosen, not tighten the truss rod and when I did this the but started unloosening from the rod, so in essence the guitar can only tighten? Is that right? what am I missing? I can't imagine tightening it up, it would get worse with more frets getting fretted out, please help, thanks,
Aluminum is soft. A tungsten carbide cutter would deal metal, and the wood. Finding one? Hmm? I might have a special punch that is made to cut stainless that I have use to do this in the past. I think disassembly is by far the best repair. I just had a nice late 50s Gibson Explorer come in that had this tool used on it, and the headstock popped off. Ouch! Easy fix became a major ordeal. Unless I have the guitar in hand I am not sure exactly what is wrong or can be done.
Nut and or saddle slots. Again without having guitar in hand it is hard to tell. Worst case scenario is the neck warped sideways. Sometimes it can be retort steamed the fret board glued back on and pray it stays. Best case, new nut and saddle.
could be the nut. does it look like the slot for the high e has excessive wear? could also be fret wear at the fret ends, have you leveled and crowned the frets lately? might have rounded the ends too much. or who ever did the work, that is. lol. last thing i can think of, and this is the bad one. sight down the neck and make sure its not twisted or warped to one side or the other. a slight movement can cause the strings to not line up correctly anymore.
The price of this kit would about equal a bargain price on a traditional repair. So it'd cost you less than paying a shop to fix it the hard way. Many repair shops will use this kit, and the cost of having a broken rod repaired at a good shop may come down, as a result. But if you want it to fix other peoples' guitars for a fair wage, consider how many broken rods you've ever been asked to fix in your entire life. I'm wondering how many tension rods have broken in the entire state of my native Minnesota, in the last five years. Ten? Twelve? Twenty? You'll have more business if you stock up on 245 bucks worth of fretting tools. In forty years , I haven't seen a single broken rod come in the door....
i hope you could invent a cutting tool that wood strip the alluminum u shape metal casing in a martin style acoustic guitar truss rod..my truss rod is badly broken..i dont want to disassemble my fret board..
I’ve got a Hohner bass with a broken truss rod. I got it from Cash Generator for £200 so it would be crazy to spend $244 on this kit even if the threads are the same as a Fender or Gibson.
I was very interested in this kit, but I quite after a quick visit to the web site. About US$ 250.00. It's very expensive to everyone. Here in Brazil are R$ 1.250,00. Inimaginable
lol its a scary procedure to watch, but it's a very important thing... i hear alot about truss rods breaking, and it can ruin a good guitar :( i know from experience. My truss rod broke on my martin, and the neck warped because I didn't realize how bad it was gettting, but when I took it in it was too late....
Causes of broken tension rods 101... Somebody sat on it , dropped it, or something fell on it. It was bad from the start, like a hairline fracture in the metal. It was improperly over-tensioned. The threaded adjusting barrel became fused to the rod from corrosion. The neck was of poor-quality wood. The guitar was subjected to extremes of temperature and humidity. These last two causes are indirect, as somebody snapped the rod trying to straighten a warped neck. Aim of the comment here, is to remind you how important it is to make certain you know why it broke, before you waste a bunch of time and money trying to fix a bad neck.
HELP LUTHIERS! I have a 60 Harmony Stratotone Jupiter with a snapped off truss nut. The prob is the washer that the nut bares against is embedded and needs to be dug out. I need to either man-up and do it, then buy this StewMac rescue tool to do the repair, OR preferably I can send it to a Luthier who has the tool so they can fix it. Anyone want the job? PLMK. Pro Luthiers with a real shop only please. PS. the t-rod was ineffective. It broke when over-tensioned a bit
For the price of the kit, ($250.00) I can buy two decent necks, or half of a super duper neck. Since I'm not in the repair business, that's what I'll do.
@grand master flash If you did fix your leg yourself, at least you'd wind up with the correct leg in a cast and probably no hospital generated deadly infection.
How does he base his prices off of? These are so expensive. I've seen a pair of Japanese wood saws handmade that are cheaper than this tool. Honestly unless you own s shop and you're going to be using this tool all the time it is cheaper to pay for somebody else to do it
Wickedly Sharp!! here's the kit for those that think it's $25.. www.stewmac.com/Luthier_Tools/Tools_by_Job/Tools_for_Truss_Rods/Truss_Rod_Rescue_Kit.html
Dan is a guitar GOD! I have one of his books and it enabled me to make a project bass out of parts. Wow!
I could watch Dan work for hours,,a journeyman Luther with that calm voice,,He,a a class act ! Is 57 too old to become an apprentice 😁
Llllll. 😊
This kit saved a neck thru Gibson I have. It sit for almost 2 years before I found this kit. .ty

I can see why the late Albert King trusted Dan to handle his guitar repair/building needs. Thanks for the demo!
I could watch you work all day. Who taught you how to do all of these repairs?
Mr. Erlewine and his brother were BORN rubbing elbows with the Master Craftsmen of the world, and they are pretty darned good inventors too!
Wow. How incredibly cool to watch a true master luthier at work.

10 years later and he still looks identical.
Hopefully he is immortal, I have a lot left to learn from him.
Stripped truss rod extraction: awesome.
$244.82 to do it: No freakin' way.
Totally agree! Junk it and buy two Harley Bentons for that price.
Only costs $250, I'll make sure to buy 4 of them.
these guys are nuts with their prices...

Man 15 years went by so soo soooo fast!

could anyone tell me what is the right tool to adjust a musicman spokewheel trussrod --- i bowed and ruined dozens of screwdrivers because it is so tight with strings on -- even in the huge stewmac catalogue i couldn´t find a dedicated tool (believe it or not..).!!
Is this repair for a two way truss rod?
That was really cool !
Does this work with a fender stratocaster? The allenkey thingy is STRIPPED :(

Don’t like the price, get creative and buy individual parts. Thanks for all your useful information.👍
Nice job.
amazing solution!
Great job!
Fantastic
You are AWSOME!
I missed how the brass thing works.
lol its a scary procedure to watch, but it's a very important thing... i hear alot about truss rods breaking, and it can ruin a good guitar :( i know from experience. My truss rod broke on my martin, and the neck warped because I didn't realize how bad it was gettting, but when I took it in it was too late....
Why wouldn’t I just put an Allen key into some vice grips and hand file it?
We shall call him,...Dr Dan.
240p we meet again
lol i was waiting for something to snap when he was winding that pole
It might be cheaper to find a micro welder who could make this out of stuff from the local hardware store.
amazing
Today's price is $333.51 Canadian !!!!!! Come on!
Miracle!!! :-)
I miss having a left hand that WORKS
For the price of the kit, ($250.00) I can buy two decent necks, or half of a super duper neck. Since I'm not in the repair business, that's what I'll do.
These tools are for gibson guitars and basses, with set-in neck (glued). Necks on gibsons are not bolt on like Fenders or many other guitars.
that not a truss rod tool in the beginning , my dad has one fo those and doesnt even play the guitar
You people are whining about cost of the tools? Nobody asked you to do this for a living, did they... What if it was your prized old Gibson. sheesh...
@grand master flash If you did fix your leg yourself, at least you'd wind up with the correct leg in a cast and probably no hospital generated deadly infection.
If you wanna dance you gotta pay the band!
I don't know. I didn't think the tool was that boring

Ì think almost all of these were played wrong.
