This video show you how to grow a alum crystal at home.
Crystal of Alum is very easy to grow it is very suitable for beginner in crystal growing.
The growing result from alum is similar to borax, but i think alum crystal is little bit more beautiful than borax. The crystal can be kept for very long time.
I will upload more videos about crystal growing in the future, while some of them need few months for growth.

Could you paint glue on a magnet then form crystal around it using the last method? If so you could could make a floating crystal if you placed it o top of a ring magnet. That would be cool.
I noticed one difference between the borax and the alum crystals. The alum crystals form triangles, and the borax squares or rectangles? I have borax crystals at home, and they're all based on little rectangles

Does “cool down” mean in 1:43, is the normal temperature? Not the hot one?
My son and I did this over the weekend. Our crystals came out white/clear even though we added quite a bit of food coloring. Any suggestions on getting the color to take?
Ive seen tips on how to get the crystal to have some color... You added wayy to little food coloring.. You should add Tons of food coloring until its opaque i think
You need to add about 10 drops

What alum did you use
If i use an acrylic spray clear coat, will it affect the crystals? I want to cover them so they cant be easily dissolved and also to prevent anyone who touches it from getting borax on them.

You can use eggshells and jar lids. With the eggs shells, you can make eggshell geodes and with the jar lids, you can make crystal candle holders.

pipe cleaner means ?
My chemistry professor still has some apprehensions of making these. She thinks that even though they will be coated with acrylic that they may still cause skin irritation. I fell like people won’t excessively grab it and also that people aren’t going to be tossing it around. I feel like it is safe enough and I will put them in plastic baggies just to give it another bit of protection. But what do you think, are these crystals safe to touch?
hm.... i have kept these kind of crystals for years and i think it is ok for me. of course i do not suggest you to touch it every often.
What's the chemistry behind this? What makes it stick to something and come out as crystals?
The alum bonds to itself chemically. It perpetuates its own crystalline form as more material solidifies. That's why it always begins with alum. With the little turtle hideout alum was glued to it, and the liquid alum bonded with it. Notice it only bonded with other alum. The liquid also forms crystals on its own as it cools which are more dense (than the liquid), and get slightly stuck to a surface as it grows (like the pipe cleaner in the first part), but it doesn't chemically bond with anything but itself. So if you broke apart the crystals from the pipe cleaner, you would find the pipe cleaner whole and the crystals were just clinging to it, not merging with it in any way.
all the crystals formed at the bottom and the food coloring wasn't soaked in....what should I do?

I’ve already made it at home, but few days later, the pipe cleaner became yellow, but I added purple colour, so the crystal is purple but the inside is yellow

the pipe cleaner give the best result, but you can also try some rocks

Where do you purchase your alum at? I want your brand! I've heard some say that some alum doesn't work properly. So again, please share! That looks amazing :)
+tellison109 sorry, i bought it from xilong chemical store with AR grade through internet. I have also tried non- brand alum before, basically the result is the same
