I like Smith a lot. I just don't know how easy it is to pry him away from his alma mater. I grew up in Michigan, I live in Oregon currently. I would much rather be in Corvallis than East Lansing. Only a little over an hour from the beach in Newport (a spot I lived in for a little while). medium sized to small town vibe. Winters aren't near as gnarly, but still get plenty cold and lots of rain. Plenty of good places to eat and drink, as any decent college town would. US20 in Oregon is pretty rad. Takes you from Newport to Corvallis, keep going East and you go up and over Santiam pass in the Cascade Mountain range and have a fork in Sisters, OR on if you want to go to Bend or Redmond. Very pretty on that side of the mountains with great views of multiple prominent snow-capped peaks. Sorry, but the scenery in Michigan doesn't have shit on Oregon. lol Not that that is a primary motivating factor on taking the job, obviously money is. But man, you'll have to really pay that man to pry him away from here to land in East Lansing. I was kind of happy to hear someone else in media point out what a good job Jedd Fisch is doing at Arizona only a couple months after I mentioned him in the comments here. Arizona's record wasn't quite as impressive yet when I mentioned him, but I recognized what he was doing and the general trajectory he had set that team on. He's already been in the state of Michigan, though (as the Wolverines' passing game coordinator in 2016--he helped make Wilton Speight look competent). He might decide that Arizona is a pretty nice spot to be and has good job security there now.
The thing with Smith though is his school isn't gonna have a conference next year. If they go anywhere it's likely to the mountain west. Not saying prying him away is a guarantee or anything, but if OSU goes to the mountain west, taking the MSU job would be an even bigger step up from a group of 5 job to a power 5 (4 I guess now?) job.
I think alma mater pride can only take you so far when your school is going to be without a conference and eventually be slightly above the Sun Belt. This might be the only shot he's got to do what's best for Johnathan Smith.
