  • As an Amazon Influencer, I earn from qualifying purchases. Build a portable, inexpensive Cattle Panel Greenhouse that's VERY easy to build, and will only cost you about 150 bucks (depending on materials in your area) and a few hours of your time. It's a design I call "TexasPrepper's Greenhouse". I did an earlier video showing the finished greenhouse, but this one details the construction.

    You can make the door swing out.

    I built one! And yes it was pretty easy. I had to have help from my sons to bend the cattle panels enough for the base, but that was all of the help I needed. The rest I was able to do by myself, which in itself is pretty impressive for someone with limited physical ability. Thank you for taking the time to put this on youtube and inspiring me and everyone that sees it to make their own. BTW I used pool noodles instead of the rolled insulation, and it worked great as well. Thank you!

    I had this same idea after seeing the panels at Tractor supply a few months ago. I will probably be building something similar but utilizing a block wall on one side and framed wall on the opposing side and by using the panel would give me a lot more height. Great job. This video solved my issue in how to make the end frame work with the doorway. Thanks so much for sharing.

  • @Blueberryjoefarms
    @Blueberryjoefarms 9 років тому +4

    I Love mine. Built the first one 3 panels long last fall. It had snow almost 2/3 of the way up the sides with the winter we had in NH, but it held together well. I still remember having to step down into the greenhouse. That is one time the inward swinging door helps. If I had to shovel snow to get in, I would have never made it in till spring.. I am now building #2 as an attachment to a shed. You will walk into the shed then take a left into the greenhouse. I used raised wooden walls 2 feet high in order to get enough height to go 10 feet wide. It is coming together nicely, but with 4 panels long I find my modified version needs a little extra support to avoid bowing in the middle. Well worth my $5 investment. Thanks for such great videos and instructions..

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX  9 років тому +1

    I absolutely love the cattle panel idea! The only thing that kept me from building a greenhouse on my property this year was not really knowing how to make the hoops and such. This makes the job seem so much easier. I"d love a copy of your list and plans. I'm moving to Georgia to homestead next January and have plans to make an Earth Bag home, an Aquaponic system but also would love to have a greenhouse. After seeing how easy this is I am inspired!! Thank you! And I know, technically it's not a greenhouse, but in Georgia, trust me it will be. Instead of a window on the far side, I intend on putting in a fan for air circulation...box fan's are cheap and work great for this application!

    A bit easier way to know if it's square is the 3-4-5 method. Pick a corner and measure from the corner down one side 3 feet. Then from the same corner measure along the front 4 feet. If i's square it will measure 5 feet between the two other measured points. You can then do the opposite diagonal corner. This helps if you do this as you are laying out the boards to know if you have them square from the get go.

But am going to use the same design and put a solar panel , Lights and a fan for better air movement when it gets too hot inside . You also gave me a great idea on how to open the front of my enclosed patio by removing the the front wall and replacing it with that wire structure and putting screening over it to allow air in during the Spring and Summer months and keeping the bugs out .... that tend to eat us alive . Great concept. Here is something you might consider. If you dropped the hight to 4 - 5 ft but configured the plastic covered screen so that you could lift it from one side to tend to your plants; the need for a door would be eliminated. Space for planting would be maximized. Cost of materials would be reduced. Weight would be reduced. Because your not using traditional PVC ribing, the wire mesh structure would provide a rigid means for gaining access to one side of the greenhouse, much like a hood to a car.

      How does your house door open? If you live in perfect conditions, maybe you could do a door your way. But for those of us that need one get snow and his plans work. Besides, the knob cost nothing his way. Great video!

    Slight issue that I have with the door......it swings in.........I would rather have it swing out, so that you do not lose any usable space on the inside. With the door swinging in, any shelves that you place in there would have to be move down on the right hand side so you would have room to go in.

      +Regina Leathers I let the excess plastic drape over my door opening, attached at the top of the door with a strip of wood, then used scissors to cut vertical slits in the plastic about 6" apart and use that as my door, move it aside to exit or enter and it falls back into place as a door closure

    While I love the simplistic design of these green houses, I would like to issue a word of caution to those who live in areas that are subject to gusty winds! I live in an area that can get pretty windy at times. I had a chicken coop that was built in almost the same manor. It did pretty well with our normal breezy weather but failed spectacularly one afternoon. Unfortunately I had a small flock of 4 week old chicks in it when it went. The wind had picked it up and chucked it down to the next road. Thankfully no human was injured when it went! the only casualty was my poor little baby Louie that had his leg fractured. He is OK he just has a stumpy short leg and runs funny because of it.
    Anyway for those who live in a area that gets windy stake them to the ground well! I wish that I had staked mine better. I should have taken the hint when the wind moved it 10" sideways one day. Don't take the chance, stake them down!
    Also if your going to be moving yours around I suggest that you add corner braces to stiffen the bottom wood frame after you secure the cattle panels. otherwise they can have a tendency to rack when you move them.

      TexasPrepper2 I was going to suggest the same thing brother. I used 4 tie down augers (Wal-Mart, $4 each) and heavy duty cargo straps to tie down my Lance Cab Over Camper while it's off the truck and in the back yard. A couple years ago a tornado passed close to my house. Lost a couple 80 ft. pine trees and some very large tree limbs, but the camper didn't budge. I'm sold. By the way, excellent design on that greenhouse.

    I think I would have had the door opening out so that all the inside would be more usable.I'd also probably set a 1x2 on the inside of the door to avoid drafts in early spring. Much better design than pvc, especially in areas where there is wind and snow. Pipe covers are ingenious and I like the way the window in the back opens out to let heat escape. Beautiful video, thank you so much.

    I forgot to say how impressive the look of the house is as well. It is surprising how structurally sound the design is. It is a solid plan. On the outside it is esthetically pleasing and inside there is an illusion of space that makes working inside the greenhouse very relaxing and inspiring at the same time. Right now I am using hanging baskets with no negative effects from the weight at all. I cant say enough about how strong the shell is and how attractive it is when finished.

    Finally, how to do the doors on a greenhouse explained so well. Thanks a million. And, what super idea with the pipe insulation. We use concrete wire mesh as hoops and needed to find a way to keep ends from ripping plastic. Pipe insulation is awesome idea. Love this whole video though for snow load, hoops from conduit seem to work better for us. Thanks again.
