The Olympics have been SO fun to watch, haven't they, Theorists? Watching Simone Biles soar to gold in women's gymnastics, Caeleb Dressel rake in the medals in men's swimming, the USA women's rugby team shocking the nation, and every other Olympic athlete has been an absolute thrill. But, one thing that we questioned was just how optimal their uniforms are. Is there a better way to win gold?

What's your favorite Olympic sport to watch?
Swimming? mabey
Skibiddy.
I'm more into winter Olympics. But I have watched some of the gymnastics this year. I just love to watch ice hockey and figure skating.
The guy with the gun with no equipment making 2nd place
Do you remember before the MICHAEL PHELPS era?
When Ian Thorpe of australia arrived with the "shark swim gear"
and then they banned that gear cuz it had advantages?
Theory idea: are cinderella's glass
Slippers actually comfortable and how strong are they
Ooo... great idea! They need to look at the translation error theory, too.
Great idea!
Mexican glass slippers makes this quite easy too
@@aff77141not made of "real" glass tho. I think if the shoe is actually made of glass, stomping your feet might just be the demised your toes
I think As/Is did something similar. They tested glass shoes and how it would be to wear them.
You forgot one major cost factor for the outfits: labour and manufacturing.
I suspect that's the bulk of the cost, yeah. Even fast fashion clothes are still mostly done by humans using sewing machines (horribly underpaid ones in horrible labor conditions), not automated machine processes. And they're just mass producing stuff in standardized sizes, not custom fitting each one to its wearer.
Plus Swarovski crystals need to be hand-placed and glued one by one, which can take hours per costume even if you're a pro at it.
I figured amy was gonna mention sourcing from humane sources and stuff like that but she didn't
@@Make.me.a.pokemon.please I hope you're blaming Amy but rather the research team
Amy will NEVER forget the cardboard beds they used this year 💀
they were also used in Japan, because in retrospect, in Rio 2016 the prophylactic preservative use broke records and it makes sense, all of those peak human physique athletes under so much stress, records are not the only thing getting smashed, but it can lead to a lot of issues, so in japan they implemented the cardboard beds that were designed to hold around 100kg
@@apollyon4578this was the funniest yet most accurate way to say this 😂
@@apollyon4578 Isnt the whole point of the beds that they are cheap, easy to transport, easy to assemble and actually sturdy?
@@LightHawKnight that's the public excuse they have lad
No one should. Those beds were so disrespectful.

now you know
Yup! A friend of mine was kicked out of her apartment for the Olympics. She had to stay at my place for 3 weeks before finding a new one, which, might I add, is a monthly rent of 988€ (about 1078$) for 15m². Paris is absolutely insane.

@@StellaHarwood-Marshall yeah, why'd they stop?
since you've mentioned corsets I would love to see a fashion theory on Corsets, well more of the undeserved hate that it gets and the false information that is spread about it. I'm a huge corset fane and find them to be much more supportive then bras. Many women find that bras just aren't supportive (especially if they are quite big) because well where's the part providing support?
It’d be great if they would collaborate with or at least share knowledge from academics or historical costuming UA-camrs too
Oh, I absolutely love this idea! Been following many historical fashion channels (like Bernadette Banner and Karolina Żebrowska), and they all talk about how corsets got bad mouthed by modern culture. It interesting to hear them explain how the believe that corsets were made by man to restrict woman is a myth, and in fact woman made corsets by themselves to help with bust support. Or how corsets are very tight and restrictive is a misinformation too, as historically corsets were tailored to each women specifically, and were actually extremely comfortable when worn correctly. It would be fun to see Amy explore this subject, and break some of those old corset myths in a future video.
Yes! I second this idea! I’m tired of all the corseted miss-information!
yess
@@sydneyhanamore is "miss-information" a joke or a genuine mistake? Cuz the correct is "misinformation" but maybe you're just doing a joke lol
These olympic participants need extra support.
That doesn’t sound right and yet it is
@@rosbindadolmo cardboard beds? Really?
These are literally the greatest athletes on the planet.
"those leotards were $3,000!" *laughing in equestrian once you add up not only the rider's gear including helmets and protective vests, but the horse's tack too*
And the transportation for the horses, have you ever heard of air horse one?
tbf most of these horses saddles will likely be in the 3-4K range, however that is not paid by the olympic comitee but by the rider and or owner of said horses as is most of the other horse tack, as these horses are ridden in that tack every day, not just for the olympics and everyone rider and horse have their own preference so non of that is team expenses. Main part provided by the team designer is, numnah's (saddle pads), hat covers (eventing) , eventing colours (XC), dressage and SJ jacket and jodpuhrs/Breeches
The thing is they wear a different Leo for each night and I think gk made at least 8 Leo’s for them so that adds up pretty quick (not saying horse stuff isn’t expensive)
The custom print on each Leo also added to the base cost. The design hits the same placement on each person which means to bulk buy.
In regards the horses I only know they can be scared of leaves (suspicious looking ones) and cost a pretty penny!
@@karenz3853 I think you are right the riding clothes for the equestrians is by default less complicated as the rules for the Dressage and Showjumping jackets are clear. Tails for dressage and normal length for Show Jumping, only colours differ slightly per country, like the Dutch Show jumpers that always have full Orange ones, Dressage tends to be muted tones, mostly black/blue ones. for eventing they also need Hat silks, but those are not expensive and Cross country colours but those tend to be basic base layers which again won't cost that much. I am not even sure the breeches they wear are provided by the team if so again not to much expense as there is very little you can do to breeches, I don't think the equestrian clothing would have come anywhere near the total of the gymnastic leo's.
Note on the long dresses women used to be required to wear, they would have ironically been made out of cotton or linen. As a person who has worked at a living history museum in full 1860s clothing, it isn’t as bad as you think.
Cotton is one of the most breathable fabrics which is why we still use it today for summer clothes xD so making it sound like them wearing dresses was awful was an odd choice to be sure.
thank you yes
Everyone keeps complaining about the cardboard beds but what no one seems to be mentioning is that the mattress isn't made of cardboard the bedframe is and the athletes have shown that the beds are durable. The spirit of the channel is to present all the facts.
i think the cardboard beds is related to the topic discussed by the channel "search party" video titled "Why no one wants to host the Olympics"
TLDW: hosting the olympics is more costly than beneficial in most cases
Omg I watched that video
I'm sad you didn't test this uniform in various sports. Even if you can't do gymnastics or breaking, but couldn't you test volleyball, basketball, soccer, running, and bicycling? I think that would've shown off exactly what this concept is capable of. And while you're at it, why not put that uniform against the more traditional ones to see if it could ACTUALLY win Gold, or if it's just a cost saving measure. I'm sure you could get MatPat to join you too, I'm sure he'd love a chance to show off his athleticism.
They'd have to MAKE this Uniform though first. And the prices they show I believe are for if they bought in bulk like the Olympics would. So chances are it'd be WAY too expensive and too much work for a silly UA-cam video. Even more so if they have to purchase traditional uniforms too... And also possibly venues for the various sports...
Editors, I would like to personally commend you highly for using the Air Emblem from ATLA whenever the word air is mentioned in any video. You're real ones for that.
Fun Fact: The Ancient Greeks, the creators of the Olympics, wore nothing but their birthday suits during all the events. It was to insure that the athletes would not be able to hide anything to cheat or get an advantage over their competitors.
Another Fun Fact: Plato competed in the Isthmian Games; the Olympics precursor
Amy I NEEEEED to know, is the D&D AC system accurate? Does the Full-Plate Armor heavy really prevent being damaged more than a Studded Leather light armor?
Is it really better to put plates of metal all around you, sacrificing your dexterity and mobility?
Even the Medium Armor that combines high AC and Dex modifier tops at 17 AC, which is still bellow the Heavy Plate Armor that has 18 AC all on its own.
How accurate is the D&D AC system? Which would also be a great occasion to show some great cosplay (and maybe even have the Team Theory company buy them for you 👀😛)!
I like this idea. I got into D&D recently and I found the armor system a little bit odd. So it would be nice to see how it would hold up in the real world.
You'll want to hit up a different channel for something like that. That would delve more into historical armour which this kind of channel doesn't really cover. My recommendations are Metatron and Shadiversity for your historical and functional fantasy needs :) Shadiversity in particular for this kind of thing as the Metatron is more just historical and less fantasy (Shad does both).
@@kyokoyumi thanks for the recommendation, but I do think it would also fall pretty well into Style Theory =P I don't think it would necessarily need to go a historical way, but even if it did its not something that the Theory Channel have been afraid to touch. Especially if it would give Amy a reason to flaunt her cosplay skills in a medieval fantasy fashion to everyone =P
Sadly, not accurate at all.
The mere mention of 'studded leather' can make the sword community froth at the mouth. It should be brigandine... which is more closely related to plate than to leather armor.
Plate is actually easy enough to move around in, more than chainmail. Yes, it's heavier, but the weight is better distributed. Leather, meanwhile, to serve as armor, would be boiled and not very flexible.
Cardboard beds is CRAZY
Don't quote me on that, but I believe the thought behind them was Paris being eco-friendly and and environmentally conscious. The hosts went out of their way to use temporary venues & removable arenas, so they won't be left behind to rot after the Olympics would be over. So I think the same logic was used when housing the athletes- instead of buying/ crafting thousands of wooden beds that would be left with no use after the game, they would install temporary cardboard beds that they can later easily remove & recycle after the games. This way, all the hotels hosting the athletes would not overfill themselves with beds they would not be able to rent out afterwards, and be left with exactly the same amount of beddings they had prior to the games in their regular work days. Unlike what Amy assumed budget was NOT the main reason behind the cardboard beds, tho it is one of it's better & significant side effects.
Fun idea, but I think they're still better off sticking with outfits that work well for their specific sport, as someone who plays tennis I'd definitely not want to use this outfit, it doesn't even have pockets.
Why do you need pockets in a game?

I think the outfit misses the manufacturing cost
Theory idea : the make or break of Disney live action movie dresses
Never thought I'd see a video focusing on the Olympics clothing, but here I am! Hopefully, they'll take into account your research in the years to come :)
The labor for actually making the leotards is not included? Or even estimated? Major oversight in total price calculation.
Are the current uniforms hand made or done via production? Either has associated costs, with hand made having high labor and manufactured having to design and set up dies and programs specific to the order. Especially as the leotards will need to be fitted snuggle and sm med large xlg will not work.
Eh "production" of clothes is also hand made.
Just hand made in poorer countries
3:09 5.7 SECONDS OF WHAT RACETIME? If I shave 5.7 seconds off a 50 second 400m, that is a WAY WAY bigger difference than if I shave 5.7 seconds off a 2 hour marathon.
I find it cool that that final design is basically the red suits from Wall E😂
Nooooo you can't create one universal outfit for all events
She said that in the video. It's why they didn't include swimming or watersports. She also acknowledged that each sport has separate rules in terms of uniform.
Even the land sports have special concerns, cyclist will look for diffrent set of concerns than a marathon runner which will have different concerns from gymnast.

Mystique is a type of lycra, and it's quite stiff compared to some other lycras. Mystique can feel slightly textured, as it is covered in a holo pattern. The company is GK, not JK.
Female gymnasts also wear unitards.
You need new researchers.
Make that idea into some Lumen Olympic wear and give it to the Olympic Committee

Great video! But what about the cist of labour? The prices you came out too seemed to be for just the raw materials, how much would the cost of making such a garment be? Assuming non-sweatshop conditions.
Even if you said eight hours per item at US minimum wage that's still another $58 added. And these are supposed to be custom-fitted.
I really think other countries are taking notes😂😂

Thats why i love germany, not in particular for their design, but for offering choices to their athletes in gymnastics for example.
I can also not get over the fact that a tennis match can go on for five hours. 🤯
It'd be interesting to return to this idea someday and actually MAKE the final uniform to see how it holds up in actual sports

Yes... definitely due to budget...
The problem with gems from like a craft store is that they are poorly made and sharp. They will cut up the athlete.
Genuinely a shock to my system whenever someone on UA-cam mentions AP classes; I have three of them this year 😭
The company bejind the suits 8:17 must have some X-Men fans, because calling it 'Mistique' is very reminiscent of another character whose skin was very adaptable, much like this athletes' "second skin" must be really flexible and transform itself to whatever sport they're in!
i wonder if there's research on whether cutting something on the grain or on the bias impacts stuff. would genuinely love a style theory on the importance of understanding fabric weaves (I know it's hella niche tho)

The yardage you choose for a "jumpsuit" is assuming something with wide, long legs. Leotards or singlets, even with shorts and sleeves would need less yardage.
But even considering that basic, many MANY athletes have different shapes and sizes. Volleyball players are often 2 full ft taller than gymnasts. And weightlifters are vastly different sizes and might require much more yardage.
I know you are doing average, but the math probably will turn out differently.
But main negative, most of these athletes are wearing different things on PURPOSE because of their specialty sport and it's needs.
Cute idea, but if every singlet had to be custom-fit to every athlete anyways, it’s hardly mass-production
Rhinestones! You could pick it off your outfit and flick it into your opponents eye
would be fun to do a runway walk of Olympic, winter Olympic and Paraolympic wear.
Love this! I can tell how much work was put into the video, but there are several sports that CANNOT use the singlet due to things like tradition (aka taekwondo, basketball , and other martial arts) or protection (like fencing). I think that the Olympic teams should really take your suggestions into account tho! (P.s. the cardboard beds are to be eco-friendly)
She did mention toward the beginning that this outfit is only supposed to be for *most* of the Olympic sports, and acknowledges several that have different forms or functions that this outfit would not work for
I was interested until she said "except swimming, well get to you in 2028"
I just suffered chaffing. I was resisting the urge to scream and act like a dog because the pain was so excruciating
Style theory: The uniform should keep drag to a minimum
also Style theory: makes the outer layer open weave cotton
Um trust me you do not want cotton in athletic wear. Besides you don't need it, this is a problem that has long since been solved by synthetic fibers.
I was watching the Olympics when my phone told me to watch this!
Stretchy cotton fabrics are usually knits, not woven.
Isn't knitting a type of weave?
@@zackbuildit88 no, knitting is made by looping a thread or yarn over itself. Weaving involves horizontal threads being woven over and under vertical threads. Fabrics are usually divided into wovens and knits when you're talking about the broadest possible categories.
