Hats off to David Coverdale for managing to keep it together in front of the biggest crowd he'd ever seen.
I think the fact that Glenn was new probably helped him, but it was a helluva performance.
Jon is the star of this song, Ritchie graciously not soloing, and Paiceys drumming is brilliant.
    RIP Jon Lord.

That groove they are laying down on the outtro is absolutely brutal. Deep Purple, 250,000 people, 125 decibels @ 300 yards from the stage, a beautiful California summer evening, bra-less blonds boogeying down... was this Heaven?

To this day it’s still one of the best concerts/shows I’ve ever been to.
The sound was amazing too, I was sitting/standing in the middle of the crowd between the stage and the speaker towers behind me, definitely the sweet spot for the sound.

Plaudits to Glenn Hughes for brilliant harmonies.
I don't know how great the onstage monitor mix was on the night but Glenn sounded great.
Was Ritchie looking over at his wife before smiling?
I saw one of the wives during Burn, when Glenn went over to Jon. She had blonde hair and was pretty.
Great outro from David and Ritchie's lick at the end was killer.
    Jon's solo was wildly great.
    Hats off to Paicey.

Each lineup was Uber talented and brought traits and mojo unique to each of the half dozen or so permetations of DP. Whether it was the trifecta of bassist/vocalist duos the band employed from 68-76, to the non-Blackmore Mk IV and Mk VI- VII versions, the temporary anomaly that was Mk V with ex-Rainbow vocalist Joe Lynn Turner, even the transition from Mk VI to Mk VII marking the retirement of the esteemed founding keymaster Jon Lord and the entrance to of his replacement, longtime rock, prog and metal ace session god Don Airey (Rainbow, Ozzy, Gary Moore, Colliseum II, Thin Lizzy, etc, etc)created a noticeable change in the bands sound. Vocalist Rod Evans and bassist Nick Simper were among the most influential and talented rockers of the late 60's, but they were a bit too traditional and conventional for a Blackmore's vision of a heavier, louder 70s band (although one need only listen to Evans on the Captain Beyond albums or Simper with his 70s band Warhorse for evidence of their ability to evolve with the rock sounds of the 70s). At the time, Ian Gillan and Roger Glover probably seemed to be odd choices as heavier, louder alternative to Evans/Simper because they were from the bubbly psychedelic pop rock group Episode Six. However, hind sight being 20/20, they brought the necessary talent and creative chops to fuel the driving, aggressive Sonic assault of the classic Mk II lineup. Gillan is amongst the greatest prototype front men from the golden era of the 70s, he had the look, the attitude, and was one of the first and perhaps the most devastating high pitch screamers of the 70s and 80s. Glover is a legendary bassists who helped pioneer the thicker chops and funky slaps and licks that defined the sound of modern rock bass. Let's also consider that Glover is a prolific lyricist and writer, responsible for a majority of the lyric writing during his years with Purple and Rainbow, as well as his whimsical rock opera, The Butterfly Ball and Grasshopper Feast. As we all know, Blackmore and Gillan basically couldn't stand each other. Perhaps the biggest problem was that Blackmore was essentially the boss, a notorious micromanager who was never content with maintaining one particular lineup or creative formula for more than a few years over the entirety of his career. Ian Gillan was not an ideal follower, his strong personality, charismatic swagger, and silver plated trachea made him an instant sensation with Purple. He was perhaps the most well rounded and talented lead singer that Ritchie ever worked with (aside from maybe Ronnie Dio). The band became exactly what Ritchie wanted it to be, yet after 4 years, 4 classic studio albums, the greatest live album ever recorded, and amazing the international succcess, Gillan and Glover were out. Ritchie felt that cow could offer no more milk, and he probably tired of sharing ego space with Gillan. He actually considered breaking up Purple to start a hypothetical blues rock band called Babyface with Paice on drums and Phil Lynott on bass and lead singer. He wisely decided to form a new Deep Purple and reap the benefits of being a household name. The new plan was to play blues and funk flavored rock and incorporate multiple singers and vocal harmonies similar to Uriah Heep. A number of candidates were considered, most notably Paul Rodgers. The band would first hire bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes from bluesy power trio Trapeze. They considered giving Hughes and his high range siren solo lead vocal duty, but they really wanted to blend a deep gravelly element with , high pitch R and B style of Hughes. In came newcomer David Coverdale. Again, these guys were hired for both musical talent and creative writing talent, taking the band to new places. Again , it's what Ritchie wanted to, but after less than 3 years and 2 vintage albums, Blackmore left Deep Purple. He supposedly tired of playing the "shoe shining" brand of rock that Coverdale and Hughes created with Purple. The band had tons of great talent come and go, so did Rainbow. That was the Blackmore way

Funny thing is that Purple might have had a different sound altogether if they went with their original choice. According to Glen Hughes, when Gillan left the first person they thought of bringing in was Paul Rogers. However, he had already committed to Bad Company. That would have definitely been an intriguing line up.

Great vocals - at least up to 2:11 when I started this note! One of my fav albums, ever, (Burn) and gotta say, Ritchie absolutely a disappointment on virtually every one of these difficult solos. As he's stated Purple NEVER took drugs besides drink, and he looks sober as a judge - I've no idea what the problem is unless they were so difficult he couldn't pull them off live.
In all, still some great moments from Cal Jam. I know a dude who told his family (British, crazy guy living in Kent, Washington) "Mom, Dad, I'm dropping out of school and hitch-hiking to Ontario, CA." "My mom, in tears, dropped me at the freeway on-ramp," he recalls! (Steve Burton you know who you are!)

Coverdale had a great voice but I hate the highest notes ( sounds like a girl , not offense), specially on Mistreated .

DP is one of the best bands live, but blackmore was THE worse guitarist I have ever heard live, and I caught them 3 times in there heyday.
He is MUCH better live in Blackmores Night.

@David Topchiev Well lookee here, it''s me ol' mate David. Yes he was talking out of his ass completely. As so many do on here. We try to educate them but it's a lost cause I'm afraid. Keep up the good work old pal.😉
