- Spectacular approach during perfect weather with beautiful views of the city of Athens with marked Acropolis, Euboea / Evia Island, Piraeus, the old Athens airport and Egina Island. Landing on displaced threshold Runway 03L. ATH / LGAV airport. We approached from the area of Thessaloniki, flew over Euboea / Evia Island and continued over the city of Athens. Finally we had to fly over the Saronic Gulf to line up with the final track for runway 03L. In the video you see the displaced threshold of runway 03L very good: That means you fly over the concrete of the runway during your final approach for about 300 meters until you reach the marked threshold. The view of a runway with displaced threshold may be a little confusing because you are normally allowed to land at the beginning of the runway. But if the runway has a displaced threshold, you are not allowed to land before the marked threshold.
Due to the great weather, we had the runway early in sight and asked for a visual approach. ATC confirmed our request but did not approve it due to traffic. So we had been vectored for an ILS (instrument landing system) approach.
The airport is located near the town of Spata. Driving distance to the city of Athens is about 30 km or 19 miles. The airport is also known as Eleftherios Venizelos airport.
The airport opened in March of 2001. It replaced the smaller Ellinikon International Airport. This airport was near the city but had no room for further expansion.
ATH airport offers two runway systems: 03R /21L (4000 m length) and 03L/21R (3800 m length).

I miss the old airport.
I agree, It is really sad. Not only in Athens. The old Munich airport close to the city or Tempelhof and Tegel in Berlin: all closed . I understand that there is a demand for larger hub airports but on the other side, I would love to see the old airport in continuing operation for general aviation or the smaller airlines. A good example how it can be done is Milan: They opened Malpensa for the long distance flights and as a hub but still keep Linate open for a limited number of point to point traffic and general aviation.
