I was a WRNS in Plymouth Naval Dockyard 1963 & later returned for a few months end of 1964 - mixed memories for me 🙂

Ah! I see the plymouth of my youth 1960s, great times, great place.
Today it's a bit of a mess, but the real plymouth people are still a delight.

You were around when I was around - in my youth too! I liked Mutley, North Hill, the Old Museum art Gallery and Library, the Barbican and the Hoe. I lived for a while in Stoke and Lipson...and North Hill

@@daydays12 The same era here too, Plymouth born and bred. Live in Stoke too for several years. I loved the hoe, barbican, swimming at Ballards and mount wise.

Very good, but you got Union Street wrong. The modern view is looking west and the old view is looking east.

Thanks Adrian - I think there was a mix up with the labelling on the photos. Some major changes around the city over the years

It's the trees that do it!

I lived in Plymouth 1975 1999. I returned for a week this month June 2012. I was disgusted how the city centre is now a trash heap of closed shops, dolite shops and dirty streets. The only saving grace was the people still retained their janner humour.

Yes, I hear that “Cultural Enrichment “ has also spoilt a once beautiful city. Before 1980 were the golden years.

To be fair, Plymouth in the late 90s was grim. Ugly soviet architecture all around Charles cross roundabout and the lido was completely neglected. The city centre needs attention and I believe it’s getting an overhaul but I’d say it’s a lot nicer now than what it was.
